About the golf ball effect thing, there's probably several reasons we don't see it on cars or planes. On cars: 1. It's a lot harder (and more expensive) to manufacture and maintain. 2. You really only need the turbulent flow at the back of the car, which you can produce using the little fins that a lot of cars have at the back. 3. I'm guessing a lot of people wouldn't like the look. On planes: 1. You're seriously going to mess up the lift. Ice on wings can have the same effect, and has resulted in a few crashes.
@magnusandersen8898
@magnusandersen8898 2 ай бұрын
Just don't do it on the wings then
@MrMarinus18
@MrMarinus18 2 ай бұрын
But also when going through high winds and especially rain the dimples would create a lot of turbulance which will translate into vibrations. With a golfball it is a sphere so it's the same all the way around. With an irregular shape like a car though the forces can interact with each other in all kinds of ways.
@mishkamcivor409
@mishkamcivor409 2 ай бұрын
They are actually used on aircraft.... sort of, we have things called vortex generators which are used to prevent airflow seperation in specific strategic areas of the wings which can improve stall characeristics. The reason you don't see dimples is that they are harder to build and might compromise the integrity of a pressurised fuselage or add additional unwanted weight, you also have to account for the fact that the fuselage of an aircraft is usually highly tapered at the back meaning that the airflow is much less likely to seperate and create a low pressure zone in the first place so the airflow just doesn't need to stick as well

The beer and liquor myth tends to be same amount of beer at least plus a load of spirits plus a kebab on the way home. Real life conditions and lab conditions may differ
@redshirt49
@redshirt49 2 ай бұрын
The big factor here is time and amount consumed. When you combine beer and liquour you tend to drink more alcohol in a shorter time frame, thus raising your BAC faster. If the evening is the same length as well you end up drinking a larger amount than you would otherwise, thus leading to this idea that mixing your drinks is a bad idea. They were approaching this from the wrong angle really, a better thing to determine is whether taking shots in addition to their regular drinking would cause them to overestimate or underestimate how much they can reasonably tolerate.

It probably also would've made more sense to people watching to translate the alcohol they drank into standard drinks. I don't know about in the US, but here in Australia, any alcoholic drink must have the alcohol percentage and the number of standard drinks in the bottle/can. Eg: a rum and coke can is normally 1.6-1.8 standard drinks. This is easier to then translate into how many standard drinks are in the beer and shots, which are usually not marked or mentioned in a bar.

I don't think Grant was an alcohol drinker, that means the difference between the first time in a long time getting hammered and the second time is massive. You build a certain tolerance for it. I think beer giving a worse feeling is because just drinking multiple liters in such a short time is sickening in itself. I think the myth comes from the difference in the consumption. You can very easily down a few shots, but if you're on your 10th beer you naturally go slower. Most people as a result drink more when drinking hard liqour than just beer, thus resulting in an idea that liqour gives worse hangovers

Yes, that's where physics really get...interesting. At low rpm, dimples *decrease* the Magus Effect, but at high rpm, dimples *increase* it. Naturally, the optimum rpms (which are different for different ranges and initial speeds) are known, and the golf equipment is designed to take care of that. Of course, we don't want our car to get ballistic in the first place so we don't want positive lift forces like with a golf ball. Since spinning the car is not a good idea, we now have various methods to increase the speed of the air below the car.

As i have ran many alcohol induced tests on myself over the period of many years - i can tell that the amount of hangover is determined from the period between last drink and sleep. If i let my intestines digest alcohol well, then it's fair chance that i dont get any hangover. But if i go to bed right after drinking and leave undigested alcohol into my stomach, then i can be quite sure that i will have blinding headache on the next day, whole day.

i'm seriously surprised seeing the dimple thing did indeed such a sizable effect in drag reduction. because unlike a golf ball which is under a low turbulent regime (Re=O(5)) so that the laminar-turbulent transition hugely shrinks the wake, flow around a car at highway speed is already highly turbulent (Re=O(7)) and making it more turbulent wouldn't really help. but i suppose it still contributes working as a vortex generator and similarly energizing the bl to keep the flow attached. ofc the effect cannot be as dramatic as a golf ball but 11% was still more than i expected. perhaps ''07 taurus doesn't have quite good aerodynamics in the first place, so that there's yet room for improvement with slight modifications
@klausstock8020
@klausstock8020 7 күн бұрын
Also note that the golf ball spins after being hit and the Magnus Effect modifies the ballistic trajectory to get a longer range. It's more than reduction of drag, in the golf ball case. Also funny that a 2007 Volkswagen Golf would get more than 40mpg in this scenario. The higher fuel consumption of the -Ford- anonymous car makes it easier to measure the difference though; I guess that's one reason why they chose it.

I've got a 30 year old Opel Calibra, a Coupe that had one of the best aerodynamics in its time (and still today). With my motorization of 170 hp, the car has a top speed of 147 mph. In the moment, this old car has a mileage of pretty exactly 24 mpg, (no winter, mixed traffic). Not too bad for that age... Ant that means that on a free autobahn, speeds of 90-110 mph, had him on 130 once, way not the end, but 30 years and 85,000 miles, take it easy. And on a straight course like that, with a constant 65 mph, I am pretty sure the 29 mpg of that dimpling would be achieveable without problems. Hmm.... what has improved in the last 30 years?

The thing with beer is that the concentration of alcohol is really low compared to liquor. In order to consume the same amount of alcohol as with one shot if strong liquor you have to drink a lot of it, when you load your stomach with so much liquid combined with the alcohol it will make your stomach more upset. I always found that drinking liquor alone is way better than even beer with liquor.

This episode changed the way i used to drink alcohol forever. Before that i was usually sticking to just one type and had terrible hangovers the morning after. Decided to try it out one night while at a party and added few shots of ouzo after the beer and omg... the next morning it was like i wasn't drinking at all. No headache no nothing. Tried it again but with wine and beer - same effect. Ever since then i always add something else to kinda seal off the night of whatever i was drinking before and it works flawlessly every single time. Really curious though what is the science behind all of this. How is this technique working, cause it's not like happening only once or twice... IT's been almost 20 years now that i use it and in never fails. In fact once on a fishing/camping trip 5 years ago, we didn't have anything else, but beer and the morning after was simply terrible. So i guess this is the control test that i needed to know this isn't just a fluke or placebo.

The tests before they went to sleep showed that they felt much more sober on liquor+beer than on beers only. Without the restrictions of the test, normal person would consume much more alcohol, because they'd feel fine for longer period of time.

The typically example for that is the skin of a shark. And guess what? Some airlines have been testing covering their planes with transparent foils with such a structure and yes, that did work very well. Lufthansa started to cover their airplanes with such a foil in 2023. It's called AeroSHARK. Just search for it if you are interested in details. But if that effect has been known for so long and successful tests have already been done years ago, why did it take so long before airlines started doing it? Well, safety is paramount when flying (except when we are talking about Boeing) and long-term studies had to ensure that such foils do not pose a safety risk. I mean, what if they could have come loose during storms and then such a foil was sucked into the engine? What if these foils had massively worsened the flight behavior in turbulence? What if water holds much stronger on these films and then freezes into thick sheets of ice as soon as the outside temperature falls below a certain level? There were a number of questions that had to be clarified before flight safety authorities could even give their approval.

The logical consequence would have been to take this car as is, and take it into a full-.size wind tunnel and EXACTLY analyze the airflow. A smooth surface causes a smooth (laminar) airflow with little drag, But such an airflow is sensitive against small disturbances, pressure changes, or following a shape. Then the airflow "delaminates", seperates from the surface, and then causes large turbulent areas creating a lot of drag. A rough surface creates a basic turbulent boundary layer on the surface. This as such has a higher basic drag coefficient than the laminar airflow. But it is more "robust" against the above disturbances, so follows a surface better. So it may be that the dimples at some points improved the airflow, probaby at the rear window. I am pretty sure that the spoiler wing on the trunk is absolutely useless. It will not produce less drag, and in these the additional downforce it creates on the rear axyle is caused by the weight of the wing and not by aerodynamic forces.

I'm curious about how many days were between the first session of drinking and the second one. Because in my own experience, whenever I have a heavy drinking night after a fairly reasonable amount of time not drinking (around a month or so) Not only I got myself more easily wasted and with less amount of alcohol, I've always had the most horrible, disabling hangover. But if I have another heavy drinking session sooner after the first one (days or less than 2 weeks after) I can really feel a lot of tolerance overalls. Then, the next day the hangover last until around midday, and if I drink a lot of water is completely bearable.

They should have tested their hangover after drining only liquor. As for the golf ball effect, 11% might be a huge difference for some, like lorries and goods transport. I wonder how that would work on train running off electricity, as well as for eletric vehicles. Actually, especially for those being given their poorer range.

Not only the dimpled car has a smaller and smoother wake, but look at the frontal and upper area. Less pressure over the hood, which is another turbulent, high pressure spot and causes the dreaded wind noise. I would gladly buy a dimpled car, no matter what the neighbours say. The result of this experiment should have shocked the automotive industry. Imagine having a dimpled surface but without all the extra weight of the clay. Even more efficient than the test.

Have fun cleaning out your dimples after every rainstorm, when you drive around with hundreds of little pedri dishes right above your head. Most liekly the increase in materialcosts and added thickness to even "install" the dimples might eat up any netgain you have.

The myhdirth would be applied while driving, different from spraying it on. Also I would believe the clay should increase the area of the car giving less fuel efficency while the weight lowered the car giving better fuel efficency.

😂 Epic car experiment. But there are a few problems with the alcohol experiment: alcohol neutralizing enzymes level rises after alcohol consumption, so their level might have been higher after the 1st test, so the alcohol in the 2nd test was neutralized faster, easing the hangover. Also, they didn't say they controlled for water consumption. Lastly, as every experiment involving humans, it should've been double-blind (not feasible here), to remove bias.

That golf ball car is awesome! Fair play to them for going through SUCH a chore to get that done. It'd look even better with white clay, it'll look like a golf ball on wheels then 🙃😅 Absolutely shocked about the affect it has on the aerodynamics too, damn... Very surprised at the outcome of Grant and Tory's liquor charades too. And damn that was bonkers when Tory jumped onto the bed. Silly bugger 😆

I don't think the golf ball dimples in the car had much to do with the reduction in fuel consumption. I suggest it was a change in windspeed or -direction since this would have a much bigger impact on aerodynamic drag.

@@tobymaxl I doubt the wind speed changed the result significantly. You are already driving at 65mph. The wind speed would have needed to change by 7,15 mph on average in a favourable direction to the test to make that big of a difference. That was a clear and sunny day.

As far as I understand it, you actually want your car to be smpoth, but only have the point of separation (and a bit up the wind stream) in prder to reduce the drag. Or you can optimize the dimples for a specific speed so the turbulence is just right, then you can coat the entire front of the car sp it gets no flow drag over its surface.

I still feel they didn’t do the Golfball car right. The reason the Golfball has dimples everywhere is since it will rotate. But for the car you just want it near the back where you need the effect. So dimples just above the rear window and on the trunk.
