In the silencer myth, I would have suggested using a suppressor along with a subsonic round. They would have gotten a lot closer to the movie sound!

@@Dabeyoun It works in John Wick because the assassins in that are fae folk, and the Good Neighbours only intersect with the mortal plane when they choose to, but otherwise yeah absolutely; and here they called the actual make-up of the sound effect 'nit-picking' for simplicity's sake, instead going with "do silencers actually reduce sound???" which is trivial in comparison.

@@ultru3525 yea 128 dB is only 2 dB lower than a jet engine, there's no way anyone would notice such a low level of sound, especially when the sound is somewhat similar to what they've seen in movies. there's a reason they're called suppressors and not silencers in the real world.

@@airi9673 that’d be a valid comparison if jet engines made noise for only a second. Obviously if a suppressor made it so a gunshot can be heard for several minutes like a jet engine, it’d be less stealthy than a short, 158 dB, unsuppressed shot

blowing your own sail works, but you have to jump and blow. imagine if you can blow hard enough to move yourself entire boat length, you put sail in front, go right next to sail, jump and blow, then you fly towards back of the boat and land on the rear end, then repeat. in theory it works, but in practice no human can blow strong enough, but concept works 100%. i've thought about similar concept for ION thursters in space, i have an idea to have near infinite fuel by using similar method, but instead of blowing air (as there's no air in space), you capture IONs and re-use them. it's all about re-placing the movement and re-using the energy. it's same principle as swinging on a swing, you don't need any external energy to start moving, it's about moment and how you apply it.

At least with dinosaurs or fictional animals there really is no clear reference point to how they should sound so drama can drive. Interestingly this can lead to some unsettling sounds as Godzilla's famous yell is eerily high-pitched to creature of that size.

My Theory why "Blowing your own sail" works is that the fan is not only moving the air that is going directly through it, but is also gonna cause the surrounding air to move in that direction. So you actually have a bigger "Air cone" than just that of the fan alone. That extra bit of air that is being moved in the surrounding is what causes the net forces to be in the direction you're blowing, because that extra bit of air is not connected to the ship and thus doesn't cause the push in the opposite direction. Which means that your sail has to be bigger than the fan you use to "blow your own sail" for it to work.

There's also the fact that for deafening sounds like gunshots and explosions, normal headphones/speakers would not be able to play those sounds 100% realistically, because they're not powerful enough to generate a sound that loud, and we don't want people to suffer hearing loss from listening to a movie (or you'd have to wear hearing protection while watching :P ), so they have to be toned down. Not to mention, the medium used for storing the audio (be it physical such as a vinyl record, or digital file formats such as mp4) have their limits too.

Wind compressed thru the fan and blown onto the sail(internal force), sail push back the wind to its origin(internal counter force), however, we are not in a vacuum, the air surrounding the boat would also give the pushed-back wind a counter force (external force), thus the boat is being pushed forward, and we’re not breaking any Newton’s law.
@airi9673
@airi9673 6 ай бұрын
additionally they're also forgetting the most important part of how sails work and that is by using the vacuum in front of the sail for forward movement, essentially the wind going past would only help in creating a vacuum in front of the sail. their research team could have found this out in less than 2 minutes even at the time this was aired

@@airi9673But if the thrust is coming from the fan attached to the vessel, not a weather system that surrounds the entire vessel, is that pressure differential acting in the same way?... I'm not so sure it would. I'm not sure it wouldn't either, but I would have thought it wouldn't produce that same low pressure zone in front of the sail. Surely someone on KZbin has gone more in depth with that aspect of it by now. It's a good point you raise there though and surprising that they missed talking it into account. Either way, I think by the time you're producing enough thrust to push the sail forward, surely you're better off to turn the thrust around and use it to propel the vessel forward, like that air boat does anyway. But we already knew that and it's obviously not in the spirit of the question.

@@airi9673Actually, the more I think about it, the more I tend to agree... The air is fluid, so to speak, and increasing the air pressure against the sail would surely cause the sail to move towards the lower pressure on the opposite side. Still, I'm intrigued to find a better experiment with a better explanation of that now.

why were they surprised that a SILENCER does it's job? it's called silencer for a reason. also they forgot to mention other benefits: accuracy and muzzle velocity and range. since it makes the barrel longer, bullets will fly faster and this gives better accuracy and range. i might be wrong, but somewhere i remember seeing that average silencers increases muzzle velocity by about 30% i hate how they imagine silencers in games tho, why do game devs think that silencer does opposite of what it does in real? in games silencers always reduces range, muzzle velocity and accuracy, this is so dumb!

@jakemacmenamin9306 Ай бұрын
I have to assume the added air resistance from having a sail down would result in more of a slowdown than it being pushed would create
@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar Ай бұрын
@@jakemacmenamin9306 Sails increase air resistance just like the frontal area of any vehicle. Even the mast contributes. Lowering a sail decreases frontal area and air resistance. Sails overcome the resistance if the wind is strong enough. Thrust, be it from a reversed jet engine blowing into the sail or turned around and mounted in a rocket, has to overcome the drag from the total frontal area for propulsion to happen regardless of vehicle type. Fuel efficiency tells all. The rebound thrust off the sail will always be weaker than the direct thrust provided if the jet engine is turned around, and more fuel will be consumed in order to do the same work comparatively. This is why you'll never see this method put into practice. Jet boats and jet planes are designed without sails and with their engines exhausting opposite of the direction of travel for these fundamental reasons.

@vksasdgaming9472 ty I will take your word for it as I am not that highly educated... but I must ask ... your explanation is bending the intake ... where it is the exhaust that is bent ... much like the reverse thrusters on jets that push the air forward of the jet .... or reverse the airflow ... so if your intake is sitting beside the sail so it does not affect the sails air .... then the nozzle of the leaf blower is bent around 180 degrees to blow into the sail ..... your leaf blower intake would have a pulling force in the same direction the sail is pushing .... I know science is confusing, but logic seems to imply different.... I would love to see an actual test ... in the meantime, I digress.
