The assault was good for cover shooting but the small blasters had more accuracy even when shooting a little faster and when moving around and don't feel as much as they are bouncing around and it's the same for a few other blasters such as long range blasters and the wookies cross bolts

I've always saw the "I have the high ground" thing as something between Anakin and Obi-wan. These two have been training and fighting with each other for years. I heard it as 'Every time we've fought like this and I have the high ground I've won. Give up, it's done.' It was one last plea to Anakin. Anakin's response of "You underestimate my power" was him saying 'This time its for real and I'm not going to stop'

@ThomasFishwick7 ай бұрын
@@wingerding That was the subtext. Not exactly subtle I'll give you, but it worked. In those terms Obi-Wan knew what he was fighting for was right and no doubts. Anakin HAD to have some doubts. At least that was how Obi-Wan saw it. Anakin's "You underestimate my power" could be seen as a denial of those doubts. I still see it literally, but it was written that way by Lucas to ham-fist the metaphor. Either way, metaphorical or literal Obi-Wan felt he had the advantage on experience and proved it.
@MrSpannners7 ай бұрын
Yeah, it was more to do with Anakin's arrogance and overconfidence, and Obi-Wan playing on that because he knew it was the only way he could win. The whole fight is basically showing how well the two know each other's fighting styles because they have sparred and fought together so often.

@gordonbrinkmann7 ай бұрын
I guess if Colby was force-sensitive he might have deflected the bolts even better 😉 So I guess this is totally possible in-universe. But the test with dodging the bullets still missed one thing: although they changed it from "sniper position" to having to get the gun up before shooting - it is then already in sniper position again, perfectly in the direction of the target (standing still). In reality the targets are moving before or while being detected by the stormtroopers and the troopers do not just have to raise their weapon and it is already directly pointed at the target. I think it should have been tested with an actually hand held gun and the opponents coming round corners and suddenly facing each other. That might have given a different result.
@Wolf-ln1ml2 ай бұрын
Yeah, there's a reason why lightsabers are almost never used by non-force-users in-universe - they're simply far too ineffective. It's the Force that makes them so higly effective and useful (such as prescience for blocking blaster bolts for example).

Two big and very crucial/important variable in the high ground fight: 1) Obi-Wan was on solid, stable land while Anakin was in a floating barge 2) Anakin jumped over Obi-Wan, effectively taking the "high ground", but also having little to no control over his movement
@sparrowflyaway8 ай бұрын
Yeah, that was my thinking too. Like, Anakin wasn't within range to take a swipe with his lightsaber, his only options were a) flee, or b) try to jump for solid ground to continue the attack, and with Obi-Wan ready to intercept and take him down, he had no way out of that position if he tried to continue attacking.
@m.h.64708 ай бұрын
There is a theory, that Obi-Wan knew exactly, that the high ground actually gives disadvantage in a duel. But that he used Anakin's inexperience and arrogance to goad him into exposing himself through taking the high ground. Obi-Wan made Anakin WANT the high ground and in trying to take it, Anakin made himself vulnerable, making Obi-Wan's victory possible in the first place. Just a theory, but one that does make sense from a psychological standpoint.

The reason why higher ground is so important I'm staying before the reveal I figured was because Jedi often used tricks like jumping up high doing some backflips or forward flips and come down on the other person. The reason the higher ground is important isn't because of any typical Jedi trait, it's simply because the plot required a dramatic moment. What they mined on Bespin, that gas, was used for blaster ammo. So of course its slower. So he didn't mean that because he was higher it was a default win but more of a warning that Obi-wan knew what to do and that what Anakin was going to try and do would fail

I can't recall hearing the myth "the good guys always dodge the lasers" even once. It's always been "stormtroopers can't aim". Feels like the people asking for that myth were in the single digits, or it wasn't asked for at all and just put in for content.
@adamloadsman2133Ай бұрын
I never thought anyone ever "dodged" a blaster shot in Star Wars. I always just thought the storm troopers were terrible shots. I can't find a single instance of someone "dodging" 😕

The guys forgot that High Ground had already been beaten in Episode 1, when Obi defeated Maul. Obi then took over the mantle of high ground reinging champ, so Anakin couldn't beat him. Also Obi was a defensive master, while Anakin prefered offense, so high ground is not good for attacking but better for defending (and also Anakin was NOT trying to duel Obi, just jump over him).

The Lightsaber blades aren't actually light or lasers, but rather made of Plasma. Which makes me want them to try plotting and crunching numbers to try to figure out what would it take to create enough Plasma to form a blade, what would it take to force it into staying as a blade, and how far your hands need to be from it to not melt.
@another39976 ай бұрын
Plasma is a gas, and gases are not solid. Therefore a sword made from plasma will not stop another plasma sword from passing through the "blade". Lightsabres do not look or act like plasma, any more than they do light.
@Josurr_Madhawk6 ай бұрын
@another3997 in the old lore (legends), it talks quite a bit about how lightsabers are, in fact, plasma, utilizing an intense magnetic field to maintain the shape of them. I don't know much about the mechanics behind it but I assume it's more about the magnetic fields that cause the problems. As lightsabers are described as being "Attracted" to one another and the blades more or less "merge" at the point of contact rather than collide. Though why you can't push through another blade is a whole other matter.

"It's over Anakin, i have the high ground" You know, there's more to it than just physically being at a higher elevation than your opponent. Having the high ground means so much more, just like placing one's arm and hand over someone's shoulder can show dominance. He has the physical as well as moral, mental and skill high ground. There's really no point in Anakin trying to overcome insurmountable odds. Yet he still does, ensuring his own destruction.
@another39976 ай бұрын
You should also know that people often read far too much into a simple situation, for no other reason than because they can and they want it to be so. That doesn't mean that they are correct. 😂

Why on earth didn't they just get a couple of Olympic fencers to deal with the 'high ground' question? They already fight with suits that make a light turn on when the sword makes contact with the other guy's suit, AND they're expert swordfighters....?

What this "high ground" myth failed to capture, and most people get wrong is that Obi-Wan doesn't mean the literal difference in height. It's the fact he has vast, stable ground he can manouver on, while Anakin if he decides to strike has to leave the platform by jumping and exposing himself. And that's literally what happens.

Lightsabers aren't lasers, you'd not only have to magically "stop" the photons. You'd also need to wear eye protection, in which on the film they appear to be bare-eyed. Dr. Michio Kaku explained this and created a challenge to make a real-life lightsaber. Which optimally would be done with plasma. Hacksmith KZbin Channel appeared to be closest to the real one, using a handheld plasma CNC torch.
@another39976 ай бұрын
This is nothing new, it's been talked since the 1977 release of the film. As for plasma, you still have the same problem. Plasma doesn't act as a solid, so two plasma swords would simply pass through each other. Plasma torches have existed for quite some time... yet they haven't been weaponised.
@XavierBetoN5 ай бұрын
@@another3997 Yep, there's the same issue on both laser and plasma for that matter. I just mentioned the specific one for laser. Besides Laser is used for long-range destruction (you might call it a weapon) and plasma torch is used for close-range destruction. -which you might also call it weapon if you use it to kill someone.

people understand the higher ground so wrong .. it's sad. it only applies when you're holding a position with weapons, cuz imagine this: you're on top of a building and you can easily take cover by just ducking, but other people are out in the field / ground, they have nowhere to hide, so you can duck, move left/right, pop up and take a shot, then hide again. that's why higher ground has significant advantage, but when it comes to fighting with melee / non-ranged weapons, then it doesn't matter at all, cuz you can be on higher ground, but if you can't hit the other person, then it doesn't matter. it does help if you're holding position tho, if someone else tries to climb up, you can knock them down while they climb up, but if it's something like stairs, then again it won't matter, cuz lower ground person has hands free and can fight back. in other words -- use common sense (something that 99% of people don't have).

The high ground statement was made because Anakin would have to jump to get off the hover raft and when he did obi-Wan Kenobi cut the legs from under him
