In the 747 cockpit, check out the number of meters and controls on the engineer's panel. No monitor glass screens, just "steam guages" and multi position switches. You dont get to see it here but I love the pinball machine technology of barber pole flags and literally, little pop up warning flags on the guages. Easy to read a watch, try 3 or 4 hands on a clock face, and read it intuitively and instantly. And the the icing on the cake - everything has a circuit breaker with an a mechanically induced warning "pop". One other gem is the stick shaker. A vibrator in the yoke, as a "feel it" based warning. Like a rumble box for a 1990s nintendo controller, except its made of metal and acuated by the same type of hydrolics used on a fork lift truck. And all this was considered a walk in the park when flying a jet, as compared with the last iteration of the piston engine. The engineer had to deal with aprox. 100 spark plugs, double supercargers, multi turbo chargers and highly complex cooling and lube setups. Get it wrong, and......

Jet engines are powerful. Some years ago I was in Sint Maarten (Lesser Antilles) and on Sundays one could go to the beach which is precisely across a narrow road from the takeoff position for the direct flight to Paris, an Airbus A330 with twin engines, each one producing over 60’000 pounds of force. One is actually picked up from the beach and thrown into the ocean, which is as close as you can get to flying by flapping your arms! Of course, I spent quite some time afterwards picking sand from every orifice in my body because you get sandblasted as part of the process.

I think that the Whites are not scared of dolphins or people.
