Local knowledge is that the original terracing was done 4000 years ago for agricultural purposes, to retain the soil. The Greeks only terraced the islands that had reliable water supplies. So, many un-terraced islands, even now, have poor topsoil They weren't dumb.

Yes, but think of the undertaking of terracing an entire island 4000 years ago. It’s not a small island and neither is Andros, but they are both nearly entirely terraced. It’s a true marvel to see
