The eyepatch thing is actually so their eyes are pre-adjusted to the dark, so if they get attacked they can just switch the eyepatch to the other eye and BOOM NIGHTVISION. I actually had to wear an eyepatch for a play once so I know this works, a little too well almost (its a little weird walking to your car at night with one eye adjusted and one eye not adjusted, all im saying).

fun fact: Submarine officers who man the periscopes still wear eyepatches to keep one eye night adjusted. Raising the periscope increases the risk of detection, which they want to avoid at all times. So with one eye night adjusted they can immediately make whatever observation they need to do and lower the periscope again.

I had eye surgery back in 2011 and had to wear a patch over my eye. Whenever I had to take it off to change it or to put drops in, if I didn't turn down the lights, it was very intensely bright. And that ladies and gentlemen is why pirates yelled "YARGH!"

Emily's accent is probably a more accurate a pirate accent than THE pirate accent. The way people talk like a pirate isn't actually an accent, it's an impression of Robert Newton from Disney's Treasure Island. The actor was from Devon in England, roughly where Black Beard was from. It was just his portrayal of a gruff man with his own west country accent...it was never supposed to be "all pirates". Despite that, since then that has been considered how pirates talk. The reality is that pirates were from everywhere. Pirates from the West Country would not have been uncommon because they have port towns, but you'd be just as likely to have Scots, Irish, Dutch, Spanish, etc. And they would not have had modern accents from those places...so a mash of all of them that doesn't really sound like how anyone talks today really is a better guess than doing an impression of an actor from the 50s.

Pirates often could, in fact, read - and they valued maps and books as much as gold and other resources they pillaged from passing ships. They wore eyepatches to help with seeing in the dark, earrings bc of an old wives tale about helping with sea sickness. They didn’t have a specific accent, it was regional. Most pirates were Scots and the Irish, though they came from everywhere. I am impressed with Emily’s pirate trivia, except that women pirates or women as crew members were more common than you expect. Some of the most famous - and the $$ richest pirate - were women. Dysentery and sepsis were big pirate diseases due to diet and lack of healthcare, BUT pirates did have a sophisticated disability pension system in case of injury. Pirates are more than Disney leads you to believe, you should definitely look into them more!

As a matter of fact, the barbecued meat called “Boucan”, was the root, and origin of the term “Buccaneer”. You see French hunters that established in the Caribbean, mainly in La Hispaniola Island (now Haiti and Dominican Republic), brought from the Tupi Indian of Brazil a form to make meat and tool for it. In all the Island where there was Taino culture (from the Caribbean to the northern part of South America), the Taíno, or Arawak Indians cooked the meat enveloped in leaves inside a hole dug in the earth. To this they called “Barbacoa”, from where the term “Barbecue” came, which was very popular in all Caribbean. Now, those French Hunters brought from the Tupi Indians of Brazil another way to make it in a grill made out of sticks, which they called the “Boucan”. That was the origin of the barbecue grill and later the meat made there took the same. These French people was peaceful, living from selling the Boucan they made to ships passing. But the Spanish Crown didn’t like that foreign presence, specially near cattle, so it started persecuting them, and the survivors decided to get revenge on Spain, attacking Spanish ships and cities, establishing the fame of the Buccaneers.

14:23. Love the content, historical note from a stickler for facts: Bart Roberts, aka Black Bart, was a known tea-totaler and was actually the only sober person aboard ship when the British Man-of-War that was tracking them caught up to them. He also wasn't captured, he was killed almost immediately by canon fire and his crew threw his body overboard according to his wishes.
