Emily's reaction to eating snails reminded me of one of my biggest food related memories. When I was a kid, maybe 11 or 12, my folks brought me to a beach party. There was a big barbeque that night, and one of the things being served was abalone. I'd never tried it before, but I was very familiar with their shells, as every single person I knew had at least one of them in their house being used as an ashtray. Being the picky eater that I was, I was more than a bit reticent to try it, but my mom told me they were basically like giant scallops, and I LOVED scallops! I tried one, and then another, and then another. It was the best thing I'd ever tasted! Then, some few decades later, I happened to learn that abalone was NOT, in fact, related to the scallop. Scallops are bivalve mollusks, and abalone is a MARINE SNAIL! I had eaten snail. And I liked it. LOVED it even! Blew my mind.
