When I was a kid, there was this old japanese man living next door that told me stories with folk creatures. What he told me about Onis was a mixture between the pure evil figure (when walking on Earth alone, but I always got the feeling it was because everyone was scared and mean to them they acted so); and benign figures who guarded the gates of hell, in order to prevent the evil people there to return to Earth. It was after this second image that I named Oni my first rescued cat, a black little lad who they told me would die shortly and who my Mom thought looked "strange and rather ugly". He survived 16 years, to me he grew up to be a beauty, and he was the most loyal and caring thing you can imagine. He even once defended me from our dog (whom he adored) when I happened to pass by him unaware that my Mom had just given him a bone. I had always been fascinated by Onis; after my cat, I think they became my absolute favourite myth creatures.

Not unique in the slightest though. Scaring baneful spirits with images of other terrifying beings can be seen in many cultures. This line of thought is what informs many day of the dead celebrations. Wear a mask to make sure the dead do not linger. That the things from the other side of the veil do not become tempted to play their wicked pranks upon you.

Fun fact; those clubs are legitimate weapons (forgot the name) and are designed as highly effective anti-armor weapons. +Brandon Gorgon, Krampus, Shuten Doji, Tengu, Yama, Kali, Ganesh, Bhairab, Tlaltecuhtli, Set, etc. all represent Planet Mars Watch *Symbols of an Alien Sky* by Dave Talbott here on youtube, and read *Worlds in Collision* by Velikovsky A few thousand years ago, the solar system was different than it is today. Planet Mars was a lot closer to Earth than it is today Today we see Mars as a dot in the sky, but 3000 years ago, the 2 satellites of Mars were visible to our ancestors. Mars was initially a beautiful spectacle in the sky, but then it caused terrible devastation, tremors, tsunamis, volcanoes, hurricanes So Mars changed from a good/beautiful deity, into the Destroyer. His 2 satellites became his horns, the stream of matter excavated from Mars' surface by electrical phenomena (cosmic thunderbolts) hit Earth, becoming a "rain of fire stones" or "rain of blood" - represented as a tongue, or as a blood wound, a mountain, an iron rod Thus, Mars became a warrior god, atop the Mountain of God, walking among the stones of fire, eventually cast down to earth. The stone that the builders rejected, became the cornerstone. The great harlot, the city of Tzar, with whom all the kings of the world committed fornication. Set apart for God. No man can buy or sell if they don't receive her mark on their hand or forehead. take a dollar bill, and read what it is written on it. IN GOD WE TRUST you may not trust in their GOD, but you sure as hell worship their money, worthless little sheets of colored paper, that fill your soul with joy

I now see more of the inspiration that went behind Akuma, a character in Street Fighter, a warrior who sought only power and being forced to retreat into the mountains when his master had enough of him, only there that he learned to harness his power even more at the cost of his humanity. Something I like about reviewing folklore, that it helps understand more and more the inspiration of many things we watch nowadays.

I weirdly like the Oni as a concept. I even decided to add them into a fantasy world for a story. Basically, they were to have been evil giants from the East that attacked the races in the North, West, South and every else hundreds of thousands of years ago. They only became as "allied" as they were with other races due to a conceited effort of unifying the three Tribes (Red, Blue and Green) and beginning trade options.

The Oni bear a striking resemblance to the Djinn in Arabian mythology. I've always wondered why devils and demons, look similar in most cultures despite the fact that they had no contact with each other, at that respective time.

You'd might be surprised to know how much contact disparate cultures had "before they had contact." There's plenty of good scholarly evidence that travel across Eurasia and Africa was continent spanning 10, 15 thousand years ago. We know because even in the absence of direct human remains, we have agricultural and horticultural shifts that were exclusive to human agricultural tamperings that changed ecosystems. Food moves wherever we go, and we were planting food all over the known world before we know what cultures were doing the cross breeding to create the agricultural version of some wild plants. Peanuts,for example, crossed over from South America to Africa so long ago, we literally don't know the culture who domesticated them in the first place, and then the America's forgot peanuts until they returned during the TAST, and were reintroduced as an "African" crop.

Can you please do a video on The Wild Hunt myth. Not the one from the witcher 3, I mean the actual myth. There is a lot of stories about them, I first came across it from The Sorceress: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, it was being leaded by the horned god Cernnunos. There so many different tellings of the Wild Hunt that I can’t pin point it’s actual origin either if it’s Celtic or Norse or something else. So please at least consider doing a video on The Wild Hunt
@sarahgray430
@sarahgray430 6 жыл бұрын
The Wild Hunt is more Germanic than Celtic, so the horned god in question would be Herne (who eventually became the "ghost" that was jokingly referred to in The Merry Wives of Windsor) but there are probably Celtic and Norse variants as well. By the Middle Ages, the gist of the story is that a man goes hunting on Sunday, and hears a sound like that of a vast hunt, and is eager to join them, but a wise person (either an old woman or a Franciscan friar) warns him away, saying that this is the sound of the Wild Hunt, who hunt the souls of those who break God's laws and harass His creatures for sport, and that if he does not change his ways he will become their quarry. This story crossed the Atlantic, and became the inspiration for the song Ghost Riders.

I always thought that the general description of an Oni, pale skin, long nose, round bugling eyes, strange colored hair and eye, huge, strong, clad in the skins of the beasts it had slain, spreading death and disease wherever it went, simply meant that the early Japanese had bumped into some wayfaring Viking or similar. They certainly fit the general description minus the usual embellishments like fangs and horns.

I do not know whether it is true or not. This story is the legend of the eldest son of my ancestor's "Minamoto-No-Mitsunaka" His name is “Minamoto-No-- Yorimitsu“. His nickname was “Raikou“. My ancestor is the third son of "Minamoto-No-Mitsunaka"."Minamoto-No-Mitsunaka" is an ancestor of the Takeda family in the country of Kai. Descendants have famous “Takeda Shingen“. My ancestor is Shingen's grandfather 's Nobutsuna‘s sixth child. If family tree is correct, I think that it was this. Let's leave my ancestor‘s story that aside for now. His nickname "Raikou" is a kanji reading On-yomi “Yorimitsu“. Most of kanji have two different readings of On-yomi and Kun-yomi, which are reflected of sound and meaning. On-yomi is originally from Chinese pronunciation, and Kun-yomi is the translation into Japanese native word. When an old man listened as "Raikou", they would imagine the thunder god or the light of thunder One of the samurai swords he had has been said to be one of the five best swords among all swords in Japan. Doujikiri-Yasutsuna is a National Treasure and it is a collection of the Tokyo National Museum. That sword slayed the oni called "Shuten-douji" and "Ibaraki-douji". It also slayed Youkai. So it changed name to Chisui-Yasukuni The sword choose the owner that is appropriate for myself. That sword is the proof of Gendi's chief

There are also stories about "good hearted" oni, like the blue and red oni that fell in love with a weaving goddess, each wanting to make her his own.

It sounds like you're mixing two very unrelated tales: The Cowherd and the Weaver (the origin of Tanabata) and the story of the red oni who wanted to be friends with humans.

This information will help me with my project. You see, im writing a crossover-universe, with own rules, systems and such, and bring fantasy creatures into their existence. The Oni there, will be a ninja-like species created in 14,000 BCE. The Red and Blue Oni will be subspecies that have been created after the introduction of Buddhism into Japan. The Aka-Oni will inherit Rakshasa-genes while the Ao-Oni will inherit Yaksha-genes. I guess i will base the Aka-Oni around this description of yours, and Shuten Douji's story.

oni masks are not meant as good luck charms, rather to trick spirits into thinking youre already evil. however its a double edged sword as it repels good luck and good spirits; the only way to find true peace is to fight the evil spirits and their temptation
