"The House of the Worm" by Mearle Prout. First Published in Weird Tales in October 1933. Although containing no direct references to Lovecraft's works or the greater Cthulhu Mythos, "The House of the Worm" has long been touted as a Mythos tale.
Author George RR Martin does not approve of fan fiction being published of his own work, and yet he got his very start writing fan fiction. One such story, "In the House of the Worm," would be a spiritual sequel to this tale, first published in 1976 as part of his greater Thousand Worlds universe. Such was the impact and influence that Mearle Prout's original Weird Tale would have. It's influence can still be felt in the greater World of Ice and Fire, evidenced through the Weirwoods, the White Walkers of the Wood, and the Long Night. In this stream we will take a look at these direct influences and parallels as we read aloud this Weird Tale.
