Well said Tyler. I am a senior who lives alone and have a sun conure Molly. I work 9-5 but spend a lot of time with her. She knows my schedule. She may scream a bit , but this just lets me know there is someone else in the house. We share food and love...the perfect pet Molly likes to watch Mango ! I'm 63 and she is 8 so we still have a lot of time to enjoy life together. Her wings are not clipped but she only flies to me , and I feed her a wide variety of foods.

Just the other week I decided to walk into a mall pet store and there was a baby version of Mango. I read the sign on the window of its enclosure and it stated it was a few months old and loves to play and dance. So I stood there for a few seconds, when it approached the window and started clawing on it, which I took it as it wanted attention. It did that for a while, then it started to roll on its back and looked at me, then rolled back onto its feet and started to claw at the window again. It reminded me of a dog, it was so cute. As much as I wanted to buy the bird even though it cost about $400, I refrained, since I know I wouldn't be able to care for it properly, not to mention I know so little about caring for such animal. I do hope it gets adopted by someone that knows how to care for such animal, because I can tell, that bird will make an incredible family member.

K Y its very good to know what’s best for the little sun conure. Some ppl would buy one, nEvEr do any research, and leave them as decorations in a cage, so I respect that. I’m becoming a brand new budgie owner in a week or so, and I’ve watched as many videos and read as many websites as I can. It’s very important to know what’s best

It must have been so hard, but you did the right thing. A lot of other people buys birds, and then can’t care for them. The bird ends up in a shelter, and it’s so sad! Some people even let their birds go into the wild, the poor little things! I’m sure someone will buy that little bird and it will be so happy, and when your ready you can get a bird, and it will be so happy!

When I started to inform myself about birds and tried to find a big cage for my then future birds, I found that most cages are way too small and the big ones where waaay too expensive for me to aford so I simply got my dad for help and started to build one myself. My two scarlet-chested parakeets now have a 2m x 1m x 2,30m big room aviary now andd they seem to be pretty happy with it. (And also it was much much cheaper than a bought cage at that size would have cost.)

I have my own green cheek conure. His name is Callum. The daycare kids (my grandma runs an at-home daycare and I live with my grandparents while I attend college and, eventually, university) absolutely adore him. He's very gentle with them and I make sure both parties don't become overwhelmed. Callum has never lunged or threatened them. He's extremely gentle and sits still while the kids pet him (one at a time, calmly, of course). There was even one instance where we had a little boy who fell and was just sobbing. I asked if he wanted to see Callum and he just stopped crying and wanted me to bring him down. I kept Callum on my hand, and he tolerated the little boy very gently petting him (I don't tolerate any roughness since Callum is a young and little bird). Long-ass comment short, this is just sort of verifying that properly socialized birds are wonderful companions and as good as any dog. Callum screams for me when he's scared (thunderstorms), when I leave the room, or haven't been paying attention to him enough (exams, ugh). He's otherwise very quiet and just adores cuddling. He's not very messy at all! He has never thrown anything out of his cage. I encourage chewing by giving him extra paper or toilet paper rolls to chew on. He likes to sit in the my window and watch everything around him (I plan to get him used to a aviator harness so I can take him outside). Funny thing is, I use that same exact brand of food for my conure. At first, he was apprehensive of it and tried to keep to his seed, but he now likes it very much. He LOVES apples, grapes, and mangos. I plan to introduce him to kiwis and pomegranates. He was hatched last October. He and I are going through his first molt. I try to help him open pinfeathers, he tries to grow in new feathers. When his molt first started happening, there was a bald patch on his chest. I was scared he had been plucking, but closer inspection just showed he had about fifty or so pinfeathers all pushing in at once. I'm waiting for his wings and tail feathers next! Absolutely wonderful companions. Anyone who can't have a cat or dog should totally get a conure (while acknowledging conures need a lot of attention from their human companions).

Basically everything he said about birds being "low maintenance" is the same for rabbits. I always see people rehoming rabbits or selling rabbits and claiming them to be " low maintenance" but I find that bunny proofing, preparing their daily greens, changing the litter box and spending time with them makes them anything but low maintenance. If you don't keep their litter box clean they will start going elsewhere. And if you don't spend a certain amount of time with them each day they will likely not be very tame.
@bagelbanana10897 жыл бұрын
It's all about perspective. If you've had a large bird as a pet, a smaller bird is definitely "low maintenance" in comparison.

rats are also very misunderstoor pets.. everyone is disgusted by their tail, they say that they carry diseases, that they bite, they chew everying, they do mess and so on, but nothing is truth. But ofcourse there always is the word "unless".. if they are not taught to do stuff properly, if they are not tamed and if they were bred in a good place, they are a lovable pets that actually are cleanier than cats. Also im glad that ive atched this video, because im in love with parrots and eventhough i dont have money to buy any bigger parrot, it is good to know these things if ever i will have a chance to have one in the future. But the only problem that even occurred in this video is that they poop everywhere when they are out of the cage... my rats were taught to poop only in their cage, some rats can be even taught to poop only on one bowl in the corner so the bottom of cage is clean longer... i wonder if even parrots can learn to only poop in their cage or on some exact spot and how to teach them that?

My third grade teacher had a rat as the classroom pet. His name was Smudge and he was white with light brown patches. Everyone loved him! He was adorable and never bit anyone. But of course one kid has to ruin it! One girl complained that the rat scratched her and then the teacher was forced to get rid of the rat. Everyone was displeased towards that girl making us lose the beloved class pet. We never got another one. As I recall, my fourth grade teacher had a pet hedgehog but again some kid complained about the little spines so the teacher couldn't have it in the classroom either. This is why we can't have nice things! Kids who can't handle that all animals have little claws and a hedgehog's spiny back will obviously be pokey so you should handle gingerly! Sheesh!

The food part is exactly like fish and flakes. First of all flakes are terrible full stop and you should use *sinking pellets* as a staple. The best staple food though is Repashy gel food. For goldfish; they're omnivorous so they need their diet supplemented with green vegetables and certain available meat like blood worms, brine shrimp or daphnia. Also very occasionally they can eat a little bit of fruit as a treat (fruit can be very sugary so feed sparingly).

I own a Greek Cheek Conure, heavily bonded to me, but is friendly to my gf (when I am not around) and same with other familiar faces. Mine knows how to talk, learnt the words we say to her the most. "Good Girl" "Go Poop" "Yeah" She loves to say "yeah" the most because I was taking advantage of her agreeing with me to the point I'll walk up to her now and she will say "Yeah" 100 times. but I can still que her to say it when needed. Oh since my gf blows her kisses so much she makes kissing noises to my gf, it's not speech but its mimicry all the same!

It's nice to see someone who knows what they're doing with parrots! Great work. The main bird that the 'birds don't need much attention' myth seems to revolve around is parakeets. It's sad really, they're such wonderful companions... But most people who get them keep them crammed in a small cage. A little more advice on switching a bird to a new food; introduce it at their morning feeding time when they're most hungry. My two parakeets started out being fairly picky when I got them, but now they're up to trying just about anything so long as it's paired with their favorite food at breakfast.

Hey Tyler! Quick question, is Mango flighted? I've been considering allowing my cockatiel to be fully flighted simply so if something bad happened with my dogs and cats, he would have a chance. However, other bird owners have advised me (seeing as though this is my first bird) to clip his wings in order to keep him safe that way. What would you recommend from your own personal experiences with Mango?
@ellajohnson11777 жыл бұрын
Kylee Bernhardt hey! I know I'm not Tyler but I thought I'd give my input. Mango, Tyler's bird is not fully flighted and has had his wings clipped. I personally have had my sun conure about three years and have never clipped his wings. Birds are highly intelligent creatures and usually understand their own ability to fly. Our baby boy flies around the house from room to room and seems to enjoy flying. I personally don't believe in wing clipping because it seems a bit cruel (of course this is just an opinion). Also having the bird be flighted in case of emergency is another great point, we have dogs and Phoenix has never had any issues with them. Of course if your bird is flighted then things like windows and mirrors can be hazardous but on the other hand other pets could be dangerous with wings clipped. Sorry about the long reply, just thought I'd share my opinion on the matter :)
@DanishButterCookie7 жыл бұрын
I have two budgies and weve just recently bought the younger one of them. he was clipped and now hes struggling to fly around the place. my older one has never been clipped and once he found out what a window is hes never had another problem with them! I dont know how my new one will handle windows because im not letting him fly around freely until his wings have healed. i personally dont recommend clipping, it takes away the birds most natural thing and keeps him from excersising properly.

@chekhovsgun77297 жыл бұрын
Parrot breeds tend to make very specific emotional attachments. Sometimes they bond strongly to one person and nobody else and other times they can bond to many people. It sounds like your cockatiel did the former and simply doesn't want to bond to anyone else but your dad, or someone in your family (or whoever owned/sold them to your family) may have scared them into not wanting to bond to anyone else.

He's also not seen as friendly by my friends because he doesn't trust them as much and sometimes hisses or lunges at them when they move to pet him too quickly. He also doesn't really talk, but I've taught him to dance, spin, and he mumbles some incomprehensible phrases sometimes but it's sad when people come over and judge his worth on whether or not he'll be friendly to them, talk to them, or perform tricks.

is it ok to leave a parrot alone for 8 hours everyday for 5 days (i have school)
@chekhovsgun77297 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend leaving a parrot alone for that long without some sort of contact, as they are very social. That said, sometimes I have to leave my own birds alone for hours at a time because of college. If you have someone at home to check on them once and a while a talk to them that definitely helps but if not, you can offer them toys to occupy their time and put music on when you're not home. I would recommend you put toys in their cage that make sounds, like bells and crinkly paper, and leave a really long KZbin playlist on while you're gone. Don't make the sound too loud, so they can still sleep if they want. Hope this helps!

I'm really would like to own a bird and I know how much work goes into it and what I need to do on a daily basis. I am at home all day because I do online school then I leave at 3:30pm or 4:30pm. I then have ballet from either 6-around9 or 4-8. By being gone this long at the end of the day would it cause any problems? Do I just leave them in their cage? Will they get too bored? Thanks:)

I have a green cheek and am planning to get a cockatiel in maybe a year or two, I need advice on their care. if anyone in the comments section owns a cockatiel, if there is anything I can learn I would be happy to hear it. Thank you.
@houseofhades58197 жыл бұрын
Blank Canvas about the same care as a GCC. they're noisy but not too noisy and usually not screams, just little whistles and beeps. They need fresh fruits and a pellet based diet no seed because they're prone to fatty liver disease. and other than that and lots of toys they're about the same care as a GCC

Another useful tip for anyone considering buying a bird in the parrot family is that, like people, all of them act different and have very different personalities. They are very smart, and each one grows up to have significantly different emotions and desires, even between parrots of the same species. For example, my first budgie ChiChi (a second-hand bird who was already rather old) was incredibly quiet and reserved; he would sing for one hour in the morning, eat, then sleep most of the day away. He did not like toys and did not like things interrupting his routine, including contact. All in all he was pretty lazy. My second budgie Cooks (another second-hand) is incredibly vocal, loves to mimic new sounds, and can speak a few human phrases. He loves new toys and is very protective of them, pouting for hours if I take them out for any reason. He's very very sassy, throws temper tantrums like a 2 year old child, bickers back when I scold him, will only eat if his food if it's pre-mashed into a fine paste, and HATES anyone who isn't me. He is very high-maintenance compared to ChiChi. Not all birds will be alike especially if they're still young and haven't reached maturity. If you aren't prepared to take a gamble then consider a non-parrot species such as finches, or adopt an older bird that has already set in their ways. And always do your research before you buy any pet, including parrots. I mean really dig into every bit of info you can find. That's my PSA, I hope it helped someone out there. :)

I have 3 feathered buddies, a Sun Conure, a Jenday Conure (who think they are a mated pair!) and a CAG ( Congo African Grey). I have always been firm in the belief that there are no bad birds, only owners who, either through lack of proper info or whatever, are not properly caring for their bird. Many just don't realize that the traits between the different species may mean the difference between a successful companionship or a sad often abused bird. Yes, most conures can blow down your house, if they aren't handled and if not properly socialized, they quickly become nippy little dictators, On the other hand, watching a Sun chase a 16.5 lb. cat off can be very funny. If you want a bird that is big but cuddly, don't get a CAG, they tend to be 1 person and not real big on cuddles (generally speaking, of course, there are always an exception) but a Moluccan Cockatoo, well I've seen them climb up on strangers and start snuggling. But you have to find what fits you and your situation. I am looking forward to watching your feathered family more, keep it up.

Nice video! I have a Lovebird and a Green Cheek Conure and it's true they're only loud when they are calling for me. As far as mess, I've had lots of pets and my birds are the easiest to care for in that dept. They are very clean and even when their cage needs cleaning (which I do every few days, they never are smelly or gross. I used to have a ferret and he was BY FAR the messiest and poo was so gross! lol I adore my birds and they are little cuddle monsters and more affectionate then my dogs!

I went into a small pet store today. There was a parrot of some kind that was screaming for a little attention. When I walked away, I am certain I heard it mimic a 'meow' that a human would make mocking a cat. Funny and sad at the same time. I applied to basically volunteer and am now doing research to help them have more enriched lives. I am hoping that I can do some measurements and design a larger enclosure at a low cost- they did not look too happy. I'm hoping volunteering I will be able to change that a little bit, even if it is by bringing them fresh fruit treats every morning. Also, I kinda proposed this in my 'resume', but on behalf of the store offer in-home care services to aid with more successful adoptions.

Can someone explain the Teflon and parrots thing. Cuz I know Teflon is toxic to parrots and people say you can't use any cookware or anything that contains Teflon but then all the people who own parrots I've seen on KZbin never seem to mention this in there "What you should know about birds" videos so I don't know if when I get a parrot how worried should I be about my kitchen items and my parrot??
@chekhovsgun77297 жыл бұрын
www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=15+1829&aid=2874 This website goes in depth about Teflon and birds, including what things might contain Teflon! Making sure your bird cage is not in close proximity to your kitchen helps a lot, as well as not feeding them anything off coated pans. It's hard to tell sometimes if your appliances have Teflon in them or not, so play it safe and check online if your specific brand of stove and cooking wear has it - and a good rule of thumb is to never have your bird in the kitchen.

ccrossiksbonss To be honest, my sun conure only poops off of ledges and she knows not to poop on, say, a bed or the dining table, she just won't poop where she sleeps or hangs around but the trouble is that she'll still poop off of ledges and so usually when she's out of the cage with you, you'll immediately notice that she pooped and you'll simply clean it up on the spot. I'd say, occasionally, you'll miss one or two on the floor under his/her favourite ledge and you can simply add a few drops of water to it or some wet paper towel and you'll wipe it off after letting it soak for 10 or so minutes. It's really not a big deal.
@skarlettimelady19167 жыл бұрын
sixmam I think that because some parrots prefer to keep their cage clean so you can actually get a small pooping perch. it's a perch with a round tray like feature at the bottom to Catch the poop. idk what they're called but I call them pooping perches.

I tried the slow approach to pellets mixed with seeds but since they weren't having it (I had seen them cautiously nibble some pellets though) I had to do it the hard way and only offer pellets for a whole day :( It broke my heart but it was the only way. As soon as they had a full meal of pellets before dusk I rewarded them handsomely with some millet from my hand. After that they have been eating pellets happily. I think it was just the initial taste switch that threw them off. Now I use seeds and millet as treats.
