Well, I think Joe Rogan said it best when he said that in trump "The morons have a king". People who voted for trump are too stupid to understand that when inflation goes down, it does not mean the prices in the stores go down, it just means that they rise at a lower rate. Dumb bastards expect prices in the stores to go down when trump takes office. Won't happen, only thing that will bring prices down in stores, is a deep recession. Why?, because then, our corporations will have to actually compete for sales, something they have not done for many years now. Either that, or deeply cut production. They are also stupid enough to believe trump's lies that China will pay the tariffs. You know, anybody as stupid as a trump supporter deserves to be broke and homeless, they certainly ask for it. After the first round of tariffs in 2018, our construction cost increased about 30%, and we mitigated this cost by increasing our rents for future tenants. On top of that we also lower the qualities of our interior finishes to further save cost. It has been 6 years since the first round of tariffs, and I can tell you, the construction industry, has yet to find some local supplies that can supply us with large quantity of steel beams. Under USMCA, stricter rules require more production within North America, with higher wages and fairer labor standards. Yes, tariffs can lead to SHORT-term price increases, but they also reduce reliance on countries like China and help build resilient supply chains with trusted allies like Mexico. It also includes sticker intellectual property protections. This strengthens the region as a whole, including the U.S., by keeping jobs and industries closer to home. Brexit was of course supported by Trump. Right wing British politicians that support Trump e.g. Truss (she who nearly wrecked the UK economy in the summer of 2022) , Johnson and Farage all supported Trump's re-election. What these people know about macro economics you could write easily on the back of a postage stamp. But if they decide to move to a more rural area where the factories are their property tax will skyrocket so high along with their income tax, making 150,000 a year is never going to be enough for a manufacturing job worker. That’s an interesting perspective! This debate between isolationism and globalism has been central to U.S. history. Both Washington and Eisenhower emphasized caution in foreign policy-not as a rejection of the world but to protect American values and resources. Eisenhower warned of the risks of the military-industrial complex overshadowing democracy, while Washington focused on staying out of European wars to prioritize growth at home. The real question isn’t about going back to the 16th or 18th century, but about finding a balance: how do we protect our domestic priorities while engaging responsibly on the global stage? History shows us we can learn from both approaches without fully rejecting either. Thats an excellent debate that should be had more out in the open.

I directly experienced the impact of Trump's tariffs during his presidency. What unfolded isn't what you might have expected. In this particular case, certain classes of electronic goods being built and exported from China into the USA were hit with a 25% tariff. In the area I work on, the devices being built were Wi-Fi networking devices. Business access points, home routers & mesh systems, etc.. Most of the companies (let's call them ODMs - Original Design Manufacturers) building these devices actually had their headquarters in Taiwan, but their factories were mostly in China, with some manufacturing in Taiwan in addition to that. Keep in mind that these companies are typically being contracted to build the Wi-Fi systems, but are only partially designing them, or simply manufacturing them. The companies that I work with (call them OEMs - Original Equipment Manufacturers) that define the products, develop the software they run on as well as design the hardware either on their own (or co-develop with the ODM) are based in the USA. Think of it this way, the OEM is based in the USA, and contracts the ODM to build it for them, using their factories. To be clear, the USA based OEMs do not have their own manufacturing capacity, as it is not as profitable to do so, so they hire the ODM to build the Wi-Fi systems for them. With the tariffs looming, the USA based OEMs went into scramble mode, knowing that having to raise their pricing by 25% (actually it would have been more because they need to maintain their profit margin on top of the higher cost of goods) would be disastrous for their product demand. So the pressure went on to the ODM companies to move their factories out of China and into other cost competitive countries. Since hosting their factories in the USA would result in a cost increase of more than the 25% tariff, the ODMs went to other countries in Asia, namely Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, and to a lesser extent, increased their manufacturing footprint in Taiwan. This was a massive effort for the ODMs, as they had to build new buildings to house their equipment, ship it all over from China to the new facilities, hire new staff, train them (often by Chinese employees) and reroute their supply chain into the new country. Not counting the fixed cost of moving their operations, their operating cost in the new countries was probably 8-10% higher than it was in China. This certainly had an impact in China, as factories that employed 1000's of people went dormant and nearly everyone that was previously employed lost their job. Did any of these jobs go to the USA? Well, with one well publicized exception that I won't go into to avoid commenting specifically on publicly held companies (you can use Copilot or ChatGPT to find out which company did add a factory in the USA) NO...these jobs / factories did not go to the USA, as many were lead to believe. I guess the punch line here is that tariffs result in complex and unpredictable results, with long term implications. In this scenario, even if the tariffs were rolled back, I don't think these factories are ever going back to China at this point. Also, if the tariffs resulted in price increases, they were marginal. Different industries will certainly have different outcomes than this, and the current 100% tariff on Chinese built cars (increased to this level fairly recently by the Biden administration) will almost certainly stifle any competition from those companies that were previously planning to build their brand and sell in the USA.

We have fallen behind by abdicating responsibity for these matters by placing blind trust in "the markets" which are financialsed and highly fickle. That doesn't do it. In fact, U.S. is enjoying a massive advantage over the rest of the world, which is largely made possible because the world at large (and China included) still honour the dollar as the principal reserve currency. That is true even after the collapse of Bretton Woods and the de-pegging of the dollar from gold. The certitude of dollar as the world’s reserve currency allows the U.S. to print unlimited amount of money, via the issuance of debts to augment the exploit and hegemony of capital, as well as to finance its insatiable appetite for consumptions. Premised on that, the U.S. thought that it could build a whole new economy around consumptions by leveraging on the strength of the dollar. This strategic shift had led to the so-called “post industrial economy”. Why not? When effectively to the U.S., the cost of capital and labour of other producing countries (notably China) is no more than the cost of printing the greenbacks. It looks like the flip-side of that strategic decision - moving from an industrial economy to an economy that is primarily built around consumptions - is coming home to roost. China, on the other hand, is making the right decision not to follow in the footsteps of the U.S.

@delilahmurray9589Күн бұрын
Both strategies have trade-offs. The U.S.’s dollar hegemony and focus on consumption have sustained its global leadership but created industrial vulnerabilities. Meanwhile, China’s industrial strength and strategic planning drive growth but expose it to external shocks and internal debt risks. Neither model is foolproof, but the U.S. has not "failed," and China’s success is not guaranteed.
@kckoay6211Күн бұрын
@@delilahmurray9589 Yes. Thanks to the hegemony of the dollar as the de facto reserve currency, the U.S. is able to continue to print money. But there is a catch when money is printed to finance Washington’s profligacy in its never ending war games, apart from financing the Americans’ insatiable appetite for consumption. The fanfare however can only last for as long as Washington is able to sustain the dollar Ponzi scheme. But unfortunately, Washington continues to shoot itself in the foot by its belligerent hostilities (towards the rest of the world) that would erode global confidence in the dollar. The U.S. economy is a giant balloon only to be deflated.

You're vastly under-appreciating the significance of America's exports. While being the reserve currency has its advantages, america's key advantages lies in its super productive industries and being a key exporter of all kinds of critical (oil, food, natural gas) and high margin industries (Tech, Software, Music, Movies, etc)

China has 1.4 billion inhabitants and has to feed a fifth of the world's population - with less than ten percent of the world's available agricultural land. This is becoming increasingly difficult. In addition to increasing natural disasters, water and soil pollution, soil erosion and desertification are also threatening yields. Water is becoming scarcer. And there are mass forced resettlements.

If you need stuff, like shoes, clothes, electronics, parts for machines, circuit boards, parts for furniture, etc you better stock up on it before next year. After the next administration takes control, you will pay a lot for any imports. If you have enough for the next 4 years, you will be saving money. If you have a surplus, you can sell it at a much higher price.

I buy food at an American fast food company or I buy food at an American supermarket that sells food produced in the US (I don't drink coffee). I watch US produced entertainment. I use US based websites. I have my money invested in US financial institutions. My cell phone is an LG, which is Korean but I think made in China. It's not like all cell phones are going to stop working the day that China stops making them for us, and we can just build a plant in Mexico if we want to. Trump was elected in 2016 and he imposed tariffs. Inflation remained low every year Trump was in office. And Biden kept the Trump tariffs on China and recently increased them. You can't see the US adopting a 996 schedule? We don't have to. Our economy is #1, not China's, and even if China does become the #1 economy that doesn't mean that the US ceases to exist.

Questions: If manufacturing is moved to America, can it be produced "faster"/per hour than in China, given higher wages in the USA? Or it will just rack the prices of products? It seems post pandemic work-ethic has declined, and people are increasingly becoming digital-nomads and finding other non-traditional ways of earning income..

manufacturing these days in China are highly automated, they installed most of the industrial robotics in the world last year, more than several other countries, combined. They have a labor shortage over there, and judging by their birthrate, it's getting much much worse. So short answer, no, unless your robots are working much faster than theirs and your supply chain is more efficient.

I am an expert on this area, and have been a trade advisor for the Federal Government in Australia. There are a lot of incorrect statements and flaws in this video. On the case of the iPhone for example. The benefit to Apple is to stop having all of their IP stolen, but even if their production simply moves out of China to elsewhere they would still benefit greatly because the biggest issue now is they use 100% outsourced manufacturing so they are passing a large $margin to Foxcon the largest Taiwanese company, for them to produce Apple products in China. While production remains in China, they are not able to own that supply chain. As Foxcon have already started to exit China for a lot of the Apple production the smart move would be for Apple to buy Foxcon as they are their largest customer. Rare Earth Minerals are not rare at all, the only issue is that China were willing to be the primary processor of Rare Earth Minerals as it has been a very dirty and polluting process. This will change, the west is where almost all innovation originates and it will be where the next technology to clean up the processing of Rare Earth Minerals comes from, at that time, China will lose their position and they will be removed from the supply chain with the exception of processing for their own needs. The USA does not want to and does not need to manufacture goods that are not practical for their own position in the supply chain of the globe. However by moving away from China to for example Indonesia, the US companies can fully own the factory. China does not allow most businesses from the outside world to fully own their supply chain in China and even where they do own their factory like Tesla, the cost is they lose all of their IP as China takes everyone's technology. The game from the Trump team is not to make everything in the USA, it is to own their supply chains and to remove all essential supply chains away from China, especially technology, as the benefits of being the world's innovation leader is lost when you pass your IP to a competitor who is actively undermining you.

@viviancarolgioao12 сағат бұрын
Consider dividend stocks with a history of steady, increasing payouts, even during recessions. For example, JNJ and PG have consistently raised dividends. Alternatively, consult a certified market strategist to develop a personalized plan.

I used to think relying on an investment advisor wasn’t the best approach, but my perspective changed during the 2008 financial crisis. With their guidance, I was able to grow my initial $320k investment to nearly $2.5 million by 2011, and I also bought my first investment property along the way.

You may have bunch of reasons and able to convince US companies to move their production plants back to the US. But, you won’t be able to convince that US company’s whole supply chains to move their production plants to US. Hence, every component and part that US company sources from overseas is subjected to import tariffs too. If you still think tariffs will not affect you when you buy American made products, think again.

I understand what they try to achieve with the tariffs. Let’s say that the manufacturing already exists. What would stop the American brand from also raising their price on the product. Produce the same, but get a higher profit from each unit sold.
