English lyrics and context for anyone interested This was supposed to be a rap battle between two characters, a rebel and the emperor, but here they're sung by the same singer. That's why the lyrics here are separated by verses according to the character. Context: 180 AD, China has had several consecutive tyrants, starvation and disease plagued the country, tens of millions of peasants rose against the emperor in defiance. Unable to create proper uniforms for the tens of millions of peasants, they wrapped yellow turbans around their heads to mark themselves as rebels of the empire. The yellow turban comes from the quote "The azure sky (Han empire) is dead, the yellow sky (rebel empire) shall rise" that Zhang Jue, the leader of the rebels, used to initiate the rebellion. Zhang Jue is the figure in the Taoist robes holding the spear-like weapon, and the yellow turbans, the peasants, colorless gray figures in the MV are mostly his followers. As he was rising up as a revolutionary, his lines were mostly about his fight against fate. The emperor at the time was a puppet to the military, but was still blamed for the massacre of the rebels. He's the person wearing the square hat with beads, and the figures in purple (a western interpretation of royalty), the soldiers with proper shields, uniforms, weapons, etc. are mostly his men. As he was a puppet, much of his lines revolves around the concept of taking control, as well as his faith in the Han empire being able to withstand any challenge. Rebel: is this the call of fate, or have I always been destined? Breaking through the blocked path to change my destiny. Emperor I laugh. I have no regrets rebuilding my shattered dream I will not regret, I will not retreat, Despair hurts more than failure, I don't want to be a puppet any longer. The strings of fate shall be in my own hand. Rebel: I will not kneel, I will not crawl the worst that can happen is death. (here, the lyrics use "death without sickness", traditionally meaning death of old age, but it can also be interpreted as dying to another cause that's not a sickness, i.e. on the battlefield) What do I have to fear, breaking free from the bondage of this cage, Putting destiny into my own hand Come on with me, tread out a path with your own two feet. You wonder what we fight for, I point to the yellow turban. You've made your choice, what do you have to hesitate about. I bind my hair with the yellow turban, doubts and fears leave only a hollow shadow behind me. I wave off the flying sand, the gravel backs away in fear. (traditionally, battlefields were also referred to as sand fields, as battles were mostly fought on sandy, flat plains. in this sentence above, both sand and gravel refers to the battlefield) I light up the night, the darkness kneels before me. You ask me where I am heading to I point at the azure sky, I will set the darkness ablaze, the sun will inevitably set. (here the sun is referring to the emperor) Emperor: you don’ t know yet that you are guaranteed to fail. I was blessed by god, I shall not fall at your hands The running of an empire, you will never understand You claim the sand drowns out the sand, I think not. it's just so so, Go ahead, charge. A pointless war of a beast against steel bars. Even if the world falls into flames and floods The Han empire will still not waver, it will not fall. (here, the lyrics use "death without sickness", traditionally meaning death of old age, but it can also be interpreted as dying to another cause that's not a sickness, i.e. on the battlefield) What do I have to fear, I am fighting to break free from the bondage of this cage, I am putting my destiny into my own hand.
