Sublimation paper and transfer paper are both used in the process of heat transfer printing, but they have some key differences. Sublimation paper is specifically designed for use with sublimation ink, while transfer paper is used with regular inkjet or laser printer ink. Sublimation printing is mainly used for synthetic fabrics like polyester, as the sublimation ink has the ability to bond with the fibers of the fabric when heated. Sublimation paper is coated with a special layer that helps the ink vaporize and penetrate the polyester fabric, resulting in vibrant and durable prints. On the other hand, transfer paper is primarily used for natural fabrics like cotton. The ink from the transfer paper sits on top of the fabric and does not fully penetrate the fibers. When heat is applied, the ink on the transfer paper adheres to the fabric, creating the desired design. While transfer paper can be used on polyester, the results may not be as vibrant or long-lasting compared to sublimation printing. If you were to use sublimation paper for a cotton t-shirt, the sublimation ink would not be able to bond with the cotton fibers effectively. This would result in a faded and less durable print. Similarly, using transfer paper for a polyester t-shirt may not yield the desired results, as the ink may not fully adhere to the fabric or withstand repeated washing. It's important to use the correct type of paper for the specific fabric you are printing on to achieve the best results in terms of color vibrancy, durability, and washability.
