How this album went under the radar is beyond me! That it (for the most part) stayed out of the “mainstream” is amazing. It captures many raw human emotions: excitement, blind love, hormone-driven cockiness, honesty, shame, optimism, and wonder. Everything in life that a teenager or twenty-something experiences. I’ll never forget the day my friend turned me on to In Search Of. People that love different genres of music are the ones that are drawn to this gem. For all of the crap music being pushed to young people at the time, I was effing amazed (proud?) in 2002 that artists my age were capable of creating something of this quality. Growing up, in my household, I had to sometimes qualify the music I consumed. Like my Mom, I listened to Classic Rock. But I also was drawn to Hip Hop / R&B. Some music should just be appreciated for what it is. I love me some Journey, but if I’m working out it’s S-dot, K-dot or somebody angrier like Kanye. Music should be enjoyed on different levels, depending on what you’re experiencing at the time. Some songs are chill and remind me of Steely Dan. Some of this album is just effing loud and makes you want to vodka/red bull at the club. Other tracks give optimism to even the crappiest of days. Anyways, this was the first “new” album I played the did not receive ridicule. In fact, it graduated to the living room shortly after my Mom heard Run to the Sun. I remember her closing her eyes, tapping her foot, and nodding. “Something had just happened there,“ I remember thinking. She never said it, but I could see that Bobby James reminded her of a troubled childhood. Like her, this album bears it’s sole proudly for the world to see and dares anyone to do the same. In Search Of reached my Mom because it’s timeless. The songs weren’t carefully crafted to infect a target audience like the plague and subsequently ascend the charts. Just look at that the front cover! You almost had to stumble blindly into this album because there was virtually no traditional media promotion. But if you, like my Mom, were lucky enough to have this album played for you, it’s quite likely you were hooked too. Be sure to share it with someone if given the opportunity. This is the album that allowed my mom and I to just sit and “vibe”. This March, my Mom passed away at the age of 48. When I heard Run to the Sun tonight, I instantly cried. Time listen to listen to this album and heal. : )

...it's because this album was WAY ahead of it's time! That's why it wasn't played, as it should have been, on the radio. Critically, though, it was recognized at least! :)
@MsTrueTy5 жыл бұрын
NERD are always ahead of their time. They are appreciated by true lovers of music and dont fit the main stream mode. they dont stay in the box; they dance around that bitch and create new ones. The critics loved this album but America sadly wasnt ready to see people of color in Rock and alternative music. Not to mention adding another deminison to it. Because of the success of The neptunes they were able to push the music they wanted and pretty much fund themselves most times. Mainstream dont know good music if it bit them on the ass!

Damn SeaJay84 your comment was god damn amazing, shit made me cry at the end of it. But this song definitely makes me feel some type of way, not a negative way either. Idk just some type of way? Hence the “in search of” title.

After Tyler shared his views about this album I have searched for every live video off this album. Pharrell is underrated in our generation because I see his obvious influence on Tyler and other on this album. Absolutely lovely.

I still remember being in my late teens picking this gem up. I distinctly remember picking up the CD case looking at the album art not knowing a damn thing about the album. I just remember that picture of shay holding that controller spoke to me. At the time I hadn't even made the Neptunes connection and they weren't even that renowned yet. They had just started making real noise and were hardly the hit factory we came to know them to be. This album blew my mind, influence my entire musical pallet and re enforced my belief that being an outsider was perfectly fine.
@StevesConcertCorner Жыл бұрын
It’s crazy to think how underrated this album still is. I bought the album as a Best Buy new artist special for $7.99. I may have known rockstar from a video game. I concur with your comment. The cd case also intrigued me.
