Mike Thank you for this video, I am still doing OO but I have been trying to get a n layout going. I have had Peco code 55 track from when I did N, but with age I find it hard to use. I have come round to the idea of Kato track, not cheap down here in Aust but as this is a longer range project it can be done bit by bit. Looking forward to your continuation of this layout. Cheers from Aust😀

I like it when exhibitions put a layout where the viewing public can get hands on and operate for themselves. I went to one last week near where I live in the West Midlands and this lovely couple made an oval layout from second hand materials and plastic kits for buildings. They also created a micro layout above their main one that was held upside down and the trains were running upside down without falling off. I was amazed. They were also allowing kids to get stuck in and activate the trains on both layouts, including the upside down one which they loved. I'm glad to see more exhibitions are encouraging this sort of thing. Your Japanese layout is nice to see especially with so much British, American and European layouts dominating the exhibition scene.

Don't do much.with model railways like I used to do, did exhibit with my mate 30 years ago but life got in the way,. So now you are giving me the kick up the rear to start I have all the timber in my workshop 1800 mms x 250 mm. Seems gone are the days of cardboard for the base board, I never did try that. Keep up the giving to the new generation of railway modelers. 👍👍🙏

Great little concept going the Japanese route, I have struggled to find a theme for my first N gauge layout but picked up some Peco back scenes in N so that will prompt to create a theme or 'town' with similar colours and period. I also just grabbed a Tomix diesel shunter that is a great little runner at a brilliant price.

So my favourite youtuber has finally taken the plunge going fully into Japanese N-scale! As you say, it's cheap and reliable. It's also in many ways easy, with many easy assembly (or already assembled) building kits and two highly reliable track systems that allow people to set up a layout and have trains running within a few minutes. In keeping with the budget theme I want to recommend Greenmax kit item number 2137 which includes 6 Japanese family homes. It's only about 1520 yen, less than £8, at my favourite seller Hobbysearch. For viewers wanting to know more about Japanese N-scale I can recommend the JNS forum. Buying straight from Japan is often the cheapest, as long as the shipping costs are spread out over many items. Also for getting access to more than a small fraction of available products it's a must, as most manufactures don't have any overseas resellers at all. I'm looking forward to follow the construction of this layout!

@@BudgetModelRailways If you were to make a layout thread on the JNS Forum to post your video updates of the layout build in, I'm sure there will be interest. I'm the guy at the forum building 75x26cm layouts and storing them in an IKEA Billy bookcase. When you stated the dimensions of the build and talked about storage, I couldn't help but thinking that I would have built it in two modules and stored it inside an IKEA Billy. 🙂

Firstly, will N scale wagons and couplings be too light and fiddly for young fingers? Also, on that note, what do you use to weight your tiny wagons? Liking your intention though. Lets get more young people on board with this rewarding and engaging hobby!
@BudgetModelRailways3 ай бұрын
The concept wasn't aimed at just children, hopefully also older people. Biggest growth in model railways is returning older modellers. I use cheap weights from ebay, although the Kato Wagons are fine without them. I don't find shunting in N any harder than OO personally

Your UK themed layouts are smaller than I could typically do as I model North American railways which use longer wagons, so I’m really interested in how this one progresses. I am starting to really like the Inglenook layouts - simple, but still interesting to operate for a session or two.
@BudgetModelRailways3 ай бұрын
With 9 Wagons there is something like 3k plus combinations of Wagons, so many hours of interest are possible
@VestedUTuber3 ай бұрын
I'm surprised people still think that switching/shunting operations are impossible in N. The club I go to does full prototypical operations with N scale, and it works... mostly well (it tends to break down when the guy who runs the first train of the day brings a pair of beat-up, out of gauge SD70s from the 80s and then tries to pull a drag freight up through Red Rock PA with them while running along 30 year old track that's been beat to hell and back, but once he's clear everything works well). We even have these short 20-foot ore hoppers we run - now, those don't get actively rearranged as they're a unit train, but they do have their own challenges.

What is an inglenook shunting layout? Looks interesting, but what is the concept please?
@BudgetModelRailways3 ай бұрын
I have a few videos on them. Basically you use a card system to pick Wagons at random and shunt them into order. It only needs two points but gives almost endless shunting potential
@thepacerman3 ай бұрын
i do like a good inglenook, but with that length you could get a much more enjoyable shunting layout with a few more points
