Thanks for making a documentary on this topic. I have been to Hong Kong long ago and it these signs never brought any attention to me. They looked old and unattractive, but after watching this short, I gained more respect for these signs because they are apart of Hong Kong that cannot be replaced! Also love the cinematography, has a similar filter as those 80s(?) HK films! :)

This is like the art of making mechanical watches. Exquisite craftsmanship and a lifetime of dedication. Sad that its going out of fashion. Wish artists take this up and propagate it.!

Really is a shame that neon tubes are fading away and being replaced by LED. I always think true neon looks amazing. I even have one in my bedroom as I love them so much. LED looks terrible for signage. Too glaring, and bitty light comes off them. Neon gives a steady, soft, uniform glow throughout the entire length of the glass tube. Much better. Also fascinating the way the different phosphors work with the two gases to produce so many different colors. I never knew the neon gas would excite a phosphor, I only thought argon could. You learn something new every day, huh?!

That's like saying a photograph is superior to an illustration. Only someone who doesn't appreciate art would think that way.
@jjss30558 жыл бұрын
+Greg Chess First of all, Calm down. I never said illustration is superior to photography, read my comment again. Second, LED and Neon do not look the same, meaning you can't make an LED sign look exactly like a neon sign so when it comes to art you cant say one is superior to the other.

This is such a wonderful film. I am a huge lover of neon, and am sad to see its decline, but it is special to see some of the talented craftspeople who create and maintain it. Thank you so much for making and posting this.

Cool video, never really thought about the process before, truly is an art form and its sad to see LED is causing it problems.

Absoutley fascinating, I hope this lighting technique stays alive. LEDs are ok but the art in true neon signs is beautiful.

I got a little neon sign for my living-room. It's amazingly bright and easily lights the whole room. It also has an organic quality to it that LED just can't match. LED's look cold and synthetic in comparison.

Where can I buy one of those transformers they show at 6:44?
@TheMachStick9 жыл бұрын
Sébastien Bourdeauducq you'd probably have to make one yourself duud, or go to china and apprentice under one of these amazing masters.
@vicromono47998 жыл бұрын
These transformers are extremely high voltage (up to 15,000 volts). You can find them just about anywhere. Ebay, amazon, or local sign shops. They differ in size according to the length, diameter and type of gas. High voltage doesn't always kill but it can jump to the closest grounded object (such as a person) and with the proper amount of amperage, it could ruin your whole day.
Does anyone know what happens to the old signs they take down?

Honest question: Are there no words for neon and argon in Cantonese? Wikipedia has 氖 and 氩, so why does he spell them (N-E-O-N and A-R-G-O-N) instead of using those words? Sorry if this isn't Cantonese. I don't speak any Chinese languages and I just assumed, since it's HK.
@nodedelta-alpha10 жыл бұрын
The reason being those words would be known only by people who studied Chemistry (and English at certain level to know how to pronounce such words) before. It is possible that the old people in the video never went through that part of education, and was already working in the industry for a living at a young age. That is why they spell it out, as if these Chemicals are product names like X.O., V.S.O.P etc.
@Sinskita10 жыл бұрын
Hola Ah, that makes sense. So chances are that he just saw a label "NEON" and didn't realize that it was a word rather than an acronym?
@nodedelta-alpha10 жыл бұрын
DallasisaLeo Yes, I think that is the case.
@DrowningInTea10 жыл бұрын
Actually, Hongkongers seldom refer to chemicals in Chinese. It's easier to memorize in English :P

Claramente no entiendo el idioma pero noto de inmediato que el neón es un arte hermoso una metrópolis sin un letrero de neón no es metrópolis ,viva el neón
Every industry has its own strange names for things they use every day. When there's not an official name, you just name it after whatever it looks like. In this case, they obviously think that part of the glass looks like a chicken intestine.
