How are Japanese Neon Signs Made? When you think about Japan, your mind might jump to the image of a neon-soaked Tokyo skyline. Areas like Shinjuku, Shibuya & Akihabara especially, have become famous for their mesmerizing neon glow at night.
To find out how these signs are actually made, we've visited Aoi Neon in Shizuoka to meet Yukinobu Yokoyama. Yokoyama-san is a Neon Master Craftsman and has been making signs for 33 years! Find out how beautiful neon signs are made by Yokoyama-san!

I own a neon shop in the united states and its so fun to watch other neon benders in other countries, their techniques and equipment are so different, really interesting perspective!

Can you recreate some of this? They seem nice...but I'm afraid of overseas shipping breaking them. :(

actually don't be because I got my newest neon sign a few days ago from Christmas and the thing is they are packed with so much foam for a good reason so don't worry about that @@dubuyajay9964

This video really makes me appreciate the immense craftsmanship behind the creation of neon signs and hope it will find its way into modern art.... Love how you put together a full-fledged documentary in 15 minutes.

Beautiful short documentary! I always wanted to know exactly how neon signs were made and this made me feel like I was there. So cool! New LED 'neons' just lack that flickering, breathing quality that makes neon so magnetic and attractive. I always relate the word 'craftsman' with wood and earthly elements, but the term makes perfect sense, Yukinobu is a true craftsman, an artist of the neon! Also, I appreciate how this documentary relies purely on ambient sounds, it makes it more immersive. If there was music at all times, I think viewers couldn't engage that much, it would have covered all the unique sounds of this studio / lab. Excellent direction! Subscribed!

Thank you for such kind words Luigi! That was really the intention when filming and editing this video. To give you all at home the most authentic experience possible without actually being there. And to also showcase the skills of people like Yokoyama-san to the world!

there are some ways to have specific color come out of the tubes 1) the fill gas. in neon signs its usually either Neon (glows orangish/red) or Argon & Mercury (glows blue). other gasses have different colors & characteristics but are usually only used in special-effect/art tubes. 2) the powdered phosphor. it coats the inside of some tubes and glows a particular color (the fill gas contributes as well). e.g., Blue phosphor will glow blue when the tube is filled Ar/Hg, but will glow Pink when filled with Neon. 3) the glass color. there are a large variety of colored glass tubes available. they are made in Italy and are more expensive than regular clear/coated glass.

Haha yea that would have been cool but Yokoyama-san makes the signs based of a design schematic. This was a design he has made many times before. Not sure we could have spent 3 days there while he completed something that complicated though! - Julian

Sure neon is better but I like seeing stores here using both led and neon. Some led neon signs look great. Led is basically more intense and bright but you can't beat classic neon. But it's more difficult to make and can break.

@@JapanGo noted, thanks. I've found if you look in to this, these companies are very focussed on large outdoor signs, so it looks like there's a bit of consultation involved if you want one.
@JapanGo

Oh yes, if you wanted something bespoke then you'd have to discuss the details with them and I'm sure the cost would go up a fair bit but there's a lot of work that goes into it. This Mt Fuji piece is one of their more standard 'off-the-shelf' designs aha.
