In his lecture “Who Are the People of God?” delivered at the 2014 Fuller Forum, N. T. Wright, New Testament scholar and former bishop of Durham, presented on Paul’s understanding of the Messiah as the fulfillment of God’s covenant with Israel-and what that means for God’s people today.

Without doubt, this is the most sound theology, I have ever heard. The Christian world needs more of this.

Once again-excellent teaching Sir. Years ago when I re-read the Revelation…I got a revelation: Although the scriptures were clear and consistent, I was one that completely misread and misinterpreted. I then realized that our eternal destination will be on this earth and not in a distant “heaven”. I had to laugh at myself because when I finally saw what was clearly stated, I was saddened as if a vacation was cancelled at the last minute. Now my prayers for God’s will to be done on this earth, as in heaven is more genuine because it is more informed by eschatological truth. Thank You!

That entire piece at around 25 min. Where he taught that Sin was being aggrandized and proliferating because of the Torah, aka sin looked like it was winning, But what was really happening was the Torah was drawing sin, like a magnet, to a people and a place (Israel) so that ultimately Sin could be condemned in the flesh of the one sinless Israelite!!! The lamb of God. 🤯🤯🤯 makes so many other passages pop into place in my head and much of Romans!!! Him who knew no sin He made Sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. What man could not do God did in sending his son. This is powerful 🔥🔥🔥For I am not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of Salvation to all who believe.

The exact thoughts that I've gained from recent, tedious studies over about a year. (If I understood N.T. correctly). I feel so good that confirmation has come from someone who is so brilliant. I also saw that I John sets parameters for being IN HIM, which suggests that if you do not abide in Him and practice sin and not righteousness, you will fail the test of justification, as you failed in abiding in Christ. He focused on the fact that the work of the Spirit begun in you will be completed. I see this is true, IF Romans 6 is actualized in the believers life by faith; ie. the co-crucifixion of the believer becomes a daily, practiced reality.... resulting in sanctification IN CHRIST.

Wow that is the most incredible explanation of a bible-wide analysis of the central theme of the gospel that I have ever heard. Wow.

The story Wright relates about Jonathan Saks' statement to the Lambeth Conference reminds me of other learned and pious rabbis who seem to come to the very verge of acknowledging Jesus as the Messiah, but then to stop at the threshold. It as if Romans 11:25-26 were being fulfilled in our ears.

It's kind of hard to explain how we are both still here. Well, other than God, his Word, and his Son.

As a Greek scholar why does he continually use the word Messiah? The New Testament rarely uses the word Messiah but rather the word Christ. I know they both mean Anointed but even the use of 'anointed' in the OT mostly does not refer specifically to Jesus. The Jews have a very different interpretation of the concepr of Messiah.

he sure likes to make caricatures of his supposed theologically biased opponents and then knock those down to introduce his work around for classic Christian doctrine. I've never read any serious theologian who fits the descriptions that Wright paints. Amazing how he can "read" Romans 3 and completely bypass the emphasis on human sin. The extremely clear meaning of the text is that the Law did not make the Jews righteous. They needed to be made righteous through the Messiah's sacrifice, "whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith." Wright's perspective makes sense if you just redefine sin, repentance, justification, and righteousness.

"How on earth can they be the means of accomplishing this goal?" The answer given by Judaism was and is the Messianic Expectation, which either was or was not fulfilled by Jesus of Nazareth.
