I am glad to see that at least one member of the Y6 class was preserved for public display viewing, the N&W rr had very impressive examples of articulated steam power with their Y & A class engines. The 2156 is the sole survivor of the entire N&W Y6 class and this locomotive pays tribute to N&W steam power and their high performance ranking articulated class locomotives.

Since it's on a loan, did St. Louis get something in return? Also, it's nice that Roanoke decided to put the big three together. And while the narrator calls it a "crappy day" in St. Louis, I'd say it's a great day - more people will see the locomotive, it actually moved, and most likely got a cosmetic makeover, plus more maintenance done for this move than the last 20 years combined. That's a good thing. While it won't ever run again, at least it's movable.

As the locomotive is an articulated one would the cost of running it be expensive as compared to a more conventional locomotive 🚂. Overseas inquiry ???🇧🇪🚝
@jameswolf1955 жыл бұрын
Not sure how to answer. Certainly it would be more expensive to operate but I believe that would be because it is larger and heavier, not because it is articulated. Extremely large steam locomotives were made articulated to allow them to run on the same radius track as smaller, shorter locomotives.

+CHRIS CARRUTH Several reasons. Less rolling resistance while being towed. Less wear on the internals of the steam system and no wear on the side rod bearings. There are probably others but that's all I can think of.
@genedahlstrom4437 жыл бұрын
They didn't, they removed the main rods. If they hadn't the pistons would have moving in the cylinders with no lube, much increased drag, etc.
