The Airbus A380 is the largest passenger and most expensive airliner in the world. Last week, Airbus announced it will end production of the A380 in 2021.
How the once promising Airbus superjumbo went from airline status symbol to reject in just 10 years? Let’s take a look at the rise and fall of the A380 in this special documentary video.

The Airbus A380 will hold a special place in many aeroplane enthusiast’s hearts considering its status as the world’s largest passenger airline and its sophisticated, luxurious and spacious first class suites, complete even with an entire bathroom and shower. However, it is undeniable that this aeroplane did not successfully challenge the Boeing 747’s dominance in the long haul flight market, as was Airbus’s aim, and was something of a commercial failure - not only did delays in the development of the model cause much higher than projected development costs, but Airbus have admitted that they are unlikely to be able to recoup the full staggering 25 billion euro price tag on bringing this model to market. This video sheds light on went wrong for this giant of the aeroplane industry, the super jumbo jet.
The Airbus A380 was aimed at airlines operating from airports with high levels of aeroplane congestion. With its two deck layout with space enough theoretically for 853 passengers, it seemed like the perfect plane to aim at airlines performing long haul flights with limited timeframes during each day to take off to make for a convenient arrival time at the destination. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the airline Emirates was the biggest purchaser of this model of plane, as it seemed perfect for their business model which has always involved funnelling a large volume of flights through Abu Dhabi airport.
However, the 20th century, four engine design made the cost per seat for the airline very high and despite the extra money that customers were willing to pay to travel with increased room and comfort, and the promise by Airbus that these planes would be the answer to the highly time-slot constrained nature of major international airports such as London Heathrow, significant orders from airline giants such as British Airways never materialised.
Though the Dubai base of the Emirates airline became a swarm of A380’s, other major international hubs like Paris, Amsterdam and Istanbul were instead thriving on smaller aeroplanes, with Airbus’s smaller A350 emerging as the apparent major future workhorse for these airports.
Production of the A380 is set to cease in 2021, after the biggest customer for these super jumbo jets, Emirates, cancelled its most recent order for 39 of them but we can expect to see the Airbus A380 still touching down and taking off well in to the 2030’s, especially as airlines will want to get the most out of these expensive and large aeroplanes, which are not expected to have great second-hand value.
The Airbus A380 is evidence that, at least in the aviation industry, bigger is not always better but the aeroplane will still be forever cherished as that great and luxurious whale of the skies.

Hi Sam my best memory of flying on the A380 was with Singapore Airlines in 2009 from LHR-HKG via Singapore's Changi airport, whilst returning home from a holiday in the UK. The most impressive feature of this plane was it's sheer size not noticeable until you looked out the window at the wing as it seemed to stretch on forever in lengnth. And although I was seating in economy class to me it felt like first or business because of the space between the seat rows and the larger seat. I was really impressed with Singapore Airlines on both the excellent levels of customer service and by the efficiency of the whole journey from check in to boarding. The A380's I have flown on were 9V-SKA, 9V-SKB, 9V-SKC, 9V-SKD. And as you can see I was lucky enough to fly on not one but four A380's during my trip as they had recently upgraded from a Singapore to Hong Kong route with, you guessed it a A380 from a 777-200ER. Although I am greatfull that the aircraft I flew on has found a new home with hifly airlines I am personally disappointed and saddened that their won't be anymore new customers of this series of aircraft after 2022.

Maybe, but couldn't this be a case like the 1920 manufacturing and economic crisis? Things last too long so at some point costumers just stop buying them because the existing pieces are sufficient to satisfy all demand, eliminating the need for supply. Maybe in 50 years when the current A380s are retired someone will start making similar planes again, and the manufacturing will just keep happening in waves like that.

Having worked on the A380 programme as a production manager for a few years I was mega keen to have a flight in one. I got the chance two weeks ago to fly economy to San Francisco from Heathrow with BA. I certainly wasn’t disappointed.. The plane is so smooth and quiet. Never felt a bit of turbulence all flight and landing was perfect. We had two seats on upper deck at the window and there was plenty of room and a place to put all your in flight items in the storage compartment below the window. Flew return flight to UK with BA 777 from Las Vegas to Gatwick. Having worked on 777 programme for a number of years was also keen to experience flying on it. After experiencing the A380 this was a major disappointment as the 777 we flew had been refurbished and now had 10 seats in a row instead of 9 and was much more cramped than the A380. Both economy flights but major difference in flying experience. Might just have been poorer weather conditions but return flight on 777 was pretty bumpy for long periods. I will be making sure any future long haul flights I take will be on the A380.

? really? Have you flown a 787 with that extra column of seats in there, you know the ones where your shoulders rub with your neighbor (thats people of normal size not big) and the arm rest is so narrow that you keep falling off it if you actually ever get to sleep.. Most 777's have also now been configured this way. The only new plane which gives you passable comfort is the A350 and that is on par with say the A330 not the A380 or a properly configured (9 abreast) 777.

I've enjoyed flights in business class on A380s of Singapore, Lufthansa, and Emirates. All three were excellent experiences. My first A380 flight was the second leg of a trip from Washington, D.C. to Beijing. The first leg, IAD to FRA, was on Lufthansa's 747-8. Experiencing both planes on back-to-back flights gave me a chance to compare the products, and while I enjoyed them both, my preference is for the 747-8. I wonder sometimes if that had more to do with the sequence though. Most of my 380 flight took place at night, and I really love the views during daylight hours.

It SUCKS - the vid never elaborates on the fall of A380 as indicated. It's a waste of time unless you want to piggybag on somebody else's experiences with, enthusiasm and love for the A380 The main reason is the ETOPS licensing for twin engine plans due to more reliable same making four engine planes obsolete. There is nothing about that - this video is a personal love story and should have been titled as so.

Murican Eagle Yes he does, doesn’t he? And that is what makes the video so totally insufficient. Nothing about the primary reason of FAA allowing twin engine planes to fly transatlantic or transpacific routes. Go check wendover production’s Small Airplanes Over Big Oceans (ETOPS explained) - then you’ll realize that the uploader only scratches the surface with his video about his A380 love affair. Not all the fancy A380 interior shots - which I must admit is impressive - can change that.

I have flown long hauls since the seventies, from DC 3's, 707's, DC8's, DC10'S, 747's, 777's, A330's and the list goes on. The queen of the skies has been always the 747, but the A380 has certainly overthrown that crown. Despite the economic implications of the A380 promising to shut down production, the comfort of this aircraft has surpassed any other, reminiscent of an era gone by. Long live the A380 and long live Airbus!

They are a failed idea, I have seen the end of this since it started. I won't bash this aircrafts interiors, However the aircraft failed where Boeing didn't. They never thought to have it live on in cargo service and so the super can't live on after the airline sells it, the super also costs way to much to fly and maintain (not to mention you can only Land some places.) And you can't fill it with cargo because the thing weighs too much. A380 the luxury fail. I do like them a small amount. The end of use sale prices mean that you will see them in service for a long while as airlines will want to squeeze as much profit out of them as possible. Good day und good luck

One of the major cause of the demise, is the lack of cargo capacity on the A380. The A380 has 32 LD3 positions, the same as the 777-200, but twice the pax. The 777-300 by comparison has 44 LD3 positions, and on a full pax load can carry up to 24 LD3 position of freight (about 8 pallets) of freight - something the A380 can't match.

To me safety is the major worry when flying. Overall whoever has flown with the a380 cannot deny that this plane is way better than all other planes, only when we flew with the Qatar dreamliner we had a comparable flight experience.
