What a neat railroad setup, 2 gauges! And that neat night time run through a tree tunnel; fantastic!

A change of scenery is as good as a rest, so the saying goes. And what a scenery! Amazing place. I especially like how they trained the tree branches to form living tunnels.
@MillBrookRailroad

@@tardismole It really didn't take any training. Those trees do it naturally.

As a hobby machinist for the last 30yrs or so, I am constantly blown away by the live steam 7 1/4" gauge locomotives... The shear amount of time, money and work that went into building them. I'd love to have a shop with the appropriate sized equipment to be able to build locomotives like that. But even with the right equipment, it's still a lot of time and money. The castings and raw material alone, is probably thousands of dollars. Then you have to have the boiler designed, built and certified. Pretty huge accomplishment...

@WHJeffB It can be done with a 9x13 lathe and a drill press. The time to build an engine from scratch is huge, though. That's why I build electric locomotives from scratch. There are enough steam engines that need repair, that you probably don't need to build one. You can find a used one in good enough shape if you're patient.

@smcnish1droid I have less invested in this hobby than most indoor model railroaders have in their locomotive collections. There is, perhaps, less impulse buying and a lot more building going on. If you are into scratch building, then this is the perfect hobby. A table saw, a drill press, a good set of files, and a welder will get you a long way.

What type of batteries do you use, and how long can they run before having to recharge? Great video!
@MillBrookRailroad

@teschvalleyrailroad on the Mill Brook 70, I use lead acid deep cycle batteries. They're about 75 Amp Hour batteries, and I can get about 6-8 hours run time.

I had to review this a few times and my wife noticed it too. Did anyone happen to notice the big black thing walking off to the left of the track about 50 yards ahead of the camera? At time stamp 22:30 . There is clearly no path there for anyone to walk on in the middle of that stretch of forest. I think you caught a ghost or big foot that you might have not noticed on can.

You have to be pretty quick with your eye but it is clearly all in black as it walks off the track and into the woods . And when the train gets to that location there is no one there. I don't know what it is. But there is something moving ahead of that train. But anyways, the trains are cool.

I can see why most people don’t want to open up the throttle when on the high line because if it gets away from them it will eventually stop
