'Tis indeed a thing of beauty and magic.' My brother 70, who used to be a stoker in the 70s and I share a deep love for these magnificent hunks of iron and it thrills us both to sit and chat about his years in steam. I'm a slightly younger sister and strangely even though I haven't his Footplate experience or any at all rather, the magic of those wheels moving in perfect unison and the punch of the steam makes all my senses spin and I lose myself in these videos absolutely. I think he's infected me with the steam virus (it must begin our arteries lol) Two steam addicts thru an thru.. an thru an thru..an thru an thru!! As a train spotter many, many years ago I recall seeing 70013 Oliver Cromwell at Leicester Central Station, in the latter days of steam. I still recall the Bournemouth - York engine changes at Leicester Central Station. A 4-6-0 GWR Hall would generally arrive late at Leicester, and then a fully hissing steamed up LNER 2-6-2 V2 would take over to York. How those Halls managed to pull so many coaches, I will never know! I used to think it odd that Leicester Central Station was an Eastern Line in a Midlands City where you could see Southern Green coaches being pulled by a Western engine. Although I never saw one, I know that Southern engines had worked the GCR through Leicester. So really keen spotters would have seen Midland, Eastern, Western and Southern locomotives at Leicester Central. Of course at Loughborough Central today, you can still enjoy that experience. Please hurry up with the bridge projects to get Leicester North linked to[All most] Nottingham South . A trip that's on my bucket list - if i can hang on long enough!!!!!!!

In August 2009 I had the great pleasure to travel the Settle Carlisle railway with this marvellous Locomotive. This was a truly memorable experience in every respect. It was myself and my Wife's 25th Silver Wedding Anniversary and we could not have celebrated this event in any better way than this. We travelled "Premier Dining " and were cosseted from the moment we joined the train at 07.30 at Peterborough, until we alighted at around 23.00 that evening again at Peterborough. We were well sooted, tired but very elated after a fantastic day. That Wonderful Loco " Oliver Cromwell is now emblazoned in our hearts . That Iconic Loco Seemed so alive to me and took every step of that journey with ease including the notorious 70 odd miles of the Settle Carlisle line which has some major gradients. I have recently had the pleasure also of a trip on Flying Scotsman, a great Loco too and a British Icon but Oliver Cromwell has the edge for me as there is something very special about this Loco. I hope it won't be too long before she returns after her rest and renovation. LONG LIVE OLiVER ! !

This is a beautiful film. No silly music just the music of the engine. On 14th May 1966 I was train spotting on Preston station (I'd only been allowed to go by my mum if someone was with me and the only person who was willing to come with me was my Gran, who sat and read her magazine as I excitedly wrote down numbers as trains came and went) and as the station staff were listening to Everton v Sheff. Wednesday in the FA Cup Final I was marvelling as 70013, Oliver Cromwell, came through pulling a freight train. The engine had been newly overhauled and looked truly fantastic. What made it all the more special for me was that this was a 'cop', I hadn't seen 70013 before that day. From then on I followed the career of 70013 closely and always thought of my Gran, who I loved dearly, whenever there was mention of the engine. I wonder if this is the last sighting of 70013 I shall have?

I was there when the overhaul had been completed back in 2008. I was on the first train it pulled at the end of the day. I have it on dvd. I recorded it on 8mm tape then put it onto dvd. It was a shame that i could not be there for it's final run of the boiler ticket as that would have been a fitting end to the 10 year ticket. Yes while i agree it will be sad not to see Cromwell on the mainline, but if we are to keep these great engines going they need to be overhauled and made sure that they are fit to run on our railways again! The wait WILL be worth while! May the overhaul be a speedy one and a BIG THANK YOU TO THE 5305 Locomotive Association for keeping Cromwell running!

What a brilliant piece of work! This brought back very happy memories of my trip to the GCR last May, when on a cloudless day I enjoyed a "Steam Locomotive Driving Experience" on this very locomotive, thanks to friends and family who purchased that for me for my 60th birthday. I had no idea I would be get to handle this fantastic machine for 8 miles (light engine of course!), I was expecting to get a "Thomas" type. Add to this the wonderful way the GCR staff and volunteers treated myself and my wife (like Royalty!) and it made up a truly unforgettable and fabulous day. Just brilliant! (I know I used that term twice, but it is perfectly appropriate!) There's some amateurish footage of this experience on my own KZbin channel.
