N54 335i Valve Cover Gasket Leak and Repair!!

So after replacing my oil filter housing gasket and my oil pan gasket, I found I still had leaking oil. I used a Depstech scope camera from underneath the car to find where it was leaking from.. I first checked the rear main seal but that looked ok, so then I went up the side of the engine and I found where the drip was coming from. The left rear corner of the valve cover gasket!! Definitely do this one yourself! this will cost anywhere between $300 to $600 to replace depending on where you go. The gasket can be purchased on amazon for $38. Save some money and do this yourself!!

I will do mine for the 3rd time tomorrow. I bought a new VCG that came with the seal installed. I'm going to put it on without any bolts clicking around on it while Im trying to install it. I have 135k miles and that oil is choking the ignition to death on cold start ups. Would have been better to leave my first replacement on.

actually I replaced my VCG 3 times and it still leaked... so i’m thinking it is a crack in the Valve Cover.. I just installed a new VC so hopefully that will fix it.

@@thekimballproject3236 So far so good. I did the same thing. The valve cover had to have hairline cracks I couldn't see. New one went right in and sat and sealed like a ducks butt. Fires up like it's brand new now. We'll see how long it lasts. Good news, is I have the job down to about 3.5-4 hours. Lol

Should I replace the valve cover with the gasket my mechanic is trying to get me to do it but I don’t think I need it should I?

I would check to see the condition of the gasket. If the gasket is old then I would replace it. If it has been replaced in the last year.. probably no need. they are pretty cheap though. If the valve cover is cracked or warped then I would replace that as well. Hope that helps.

Was there oil leaking around the valve cover / coil plugs ?

Yeah there was oil leaking from the rear corner as well as around the plugs.. Spark plugs were in a pool of oil. I think my cover was actually cracked because after replacing the gasket it still leaked. I eventually replaced the cover and now have no more leaks.

@@thekimballproject3236 did this leak cause any misfire codes ? I currently got a misfire code and when I pulled out my ignition coil in cylinder 2 I found some oil in my spark plug
