Love too watch these KR1 & 2’s, I was former pilot lost health. I is so great to see Ken Rands still going strong. I personally knew Ken Rand & Stu Robinson in Huntington Beach CA in 70’s. I miss him a lot he opened doors for Experimental Aircrafts.

Thank Chris I appreciate the info! I like the speed you get. I probably need a little more gross weight. I want a good fast traveling plane for me my wife and baggage. If it was just me I’d go with the KR 2s if I could get one already built. Thanks again!

If your control surfaces are balanced it will go a lot faster . My KR2 went about 230 mph while pulling about 3.5 Gs on a pull out .

Based on the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow, what performance increase do you anticipate with the upcoming new engine?

I really enjoyed this :) thanks for posting. I'm having trouble finding any info about the G limits and if the plane is capable of any gentleman aerobatics. Are you able to do any loops, rolls, or spins in this?
@vr6chrisvw
@vr6chrisvw 2 жыл бұрын
The G limits are a little old and based off of a gross weight of 980. That being said, I have bigger spars and other things. I have done aileron rolls and could probably do more I just don't.

The KR2 was rated at 6 G up or inverted at 800# Its a very strong airplane . But of course its not a factory built so each build varies. As for spins I have spun my KR2 many times . But make sure you have a forward CG and spin training. As for the KR2S I would get more information from the Kit Provider .

A fellow named Sam Bailey from Pratt, Kansas built three KR's and used one of them to do a full aerobatic routine at airshows. +9 -7 are the numbers on my KR-1½. There's never been an in-flight structural failure with the KR designs.

@@mikestirewalt5193 With a standard construction its supposed to be 6 gs upright and inverted at 480#. Most are 700 to 750 . Mine was 660# empty.I think the airplane will stand more that you will want to experience . I tested mine in 45 degree accelerated stalls and it maintained altitude down to about 40 kt with a probable pitot tube stall completely manageable. But in a mush do not apply 75% power or it will snap into a spin.

Hello Chris, I just bought one here in Italy and I’m trying to got as much info as I can. Just a quick question how many horse power your engine has? So cruise speed it’s about 170 mph right? Thanks for the info.
@vr6chrisvw
@vr6chrisvw 2 жыл бұрын
120 HP. I can get 190 mph down low and usually cruise up high around 170 mph

Is that an air fuel ratio gauge on the right? Wonderful airplane! The visibility looks amazing which is sometimes rare over the cowling.

Yes. It is an Innovate wideband O2 sensor

Do you run unleaded fuel? I've always wondered why there couldn't be a simple gauge like that installed on any aircraft to help with leaning.

I've only run 100LL since it's the same price as premium fuel here.

Chris are you flying the hole flight with full throttle?

Yeah. My throttle doesn't come out until I want to descend.

So, oke, I do 45% throttle position in criuse flight. You are sure this 100% is oke for your engine?
@vr6chrisvw
@vr6chrisvw 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, my redline is 3600 rpm. In cruise I see 3200-3300. 188 hours on the hobbs with no issues and oil analysis shows normal wear like all the other flying Corvairs.

@@stephkr2412 Chris apparently operates his KR just as I do mine. I control power with fuel consumption/altitude, not throttle (unless I'm staying down low for some reason). Full throttle at 10.5 or 11.5 (or higher) renders only 55% power (more or less) WOT.

Chris, with your diameter prop, your tips are going beyond mach and wasting power at the RPM's you've mentioned. Keep your diameter but add more pitch - enough to slow your tips down to 3100 (cruise). This will get you better speed and fuel consumption. You can research this to verify - don't take my comment as written in adamantine.
@vr6chrisvw
@vr6chrisvw Жыл бұрын
I don't know how you think that is the case. My prop tips aren't even close to mach even at redline

@@vr6chrisvw Do more looking into it. I'm not good at argument. If I find a reference for you I'll post it.
@vr6chrisvw
@vr6chrisvw Жыл бұрын
I don't argue. I speak facts. At 3600 rpm and 0 degrees Celsius, my prop tip speed would be .78 mach. Which like I said, I don't cruise at. I agree that more pitch would be more fuel efficient, I have a prop with more pitch already, I took some pitch out to improve climb performance at gross weight and get the same cruise speed.
@mikestirewalt5193

In my experience you are way too worried about aft CG issues. Tail-first landings are the only price to be paid to be heavy in the rear. Advantage is one cruises faster. Important not to stall in an aft-CG config, but then that's probably why you're so concerned. Did you know Dan Heath is a two-plane KR builder who has built a Panther? kzbin.info/www/bejne/l16kcmOopa2le9E

My aft CG testing was to confirm I could safely handle the airplane heavy, with a passenger and make a safe landing in an emergency. It was a methodical approach to reach what I consider a safe envelope while carrying another life in my hands.
