When I hear people like you speak, it makes me feel better because I get into debate trouble nuff time. I was a part of a Caribbean assoc. in Japan several years ago, and we were planning some type of Caribbean community panel.(don’t recall details). I was one of the moderators. During planning, the lead person was constantly using ‘big words’ sometimes without context; just throwing out words. I asked if at the event, he could speak in such a way that the majority will be able to understand what’s being said as opposed to just a few. His response was that we needed to bring everyone else up to our intellectual level. If I wasn’t already committed, I would not have attended. I told him that if he’s speaking to a crowd and only 2% can comprehend, then his efforts were futile… him dun wid mi since dat day! My point; this is common with most of these people; big fluffed up empty words, with no opinions and definitely no type of solution.

They just repeat what is written in a book

Truth. Plain truth. Couldn't be said clearer. I remember some people like that I worked with in an organization defending children and women's rights. One morning a temp receptionist came in with a swollen face obviously from domestic abuse. I was appalled that no one reached out to her. What was really sad was that a woman headed the organisation and mainly women worked there. As you said, nuff talk "behind back" and no action or solution. Sad

Just watched Dionne's video and must say YOU are BOTH correct. Unfortunately reality is that we're in a world/society that abides by and implementation laws that are in some ways guided by research results. Having said that, I completely agree there needs to be stiffer and uncompromising penalties for certain crimes in our society. Which crimes and what punishment is where the quagmire comes into play. While some ideas may seem outdated and rooted in "slavery" there needs to be means to gain order and respect for authority that will be true deterrent. How many more incidents like the one's referenced need to happen before action is taken? Let this not become a never ending debate topic. There have been too many examples to point to. We must and can do better!
@IBumpg16 күн бұрын
In the late seventies, we went to listen to a plea by someone that we knew quite well, to be elected as a political representative to the Jamaican house of parliament. At the end of the speech, we who knew him well pulled him aside and chastised him pointing out that he did not genuinely reflect his true beliefs. To this day, I have never forgotten what he said to us in response. In essence, he asked us if we thought that the people would have voted for him with his plans and outlook. To that we answered, no. Next, he wanted to know if we wanted the changes that he always posited. Yes, we replied. Then he asked us where we thought that he would have the best chance of making this possible. In parliament, we chimed. Finally, he explained to us that he had to get into government to realize these ideas coming to fruition. In other words, there are times when one has to walk a fine line initially if he/she hopes to provide a more lasting and meaningful effect in the future. Many times, in life, one has to delay an obvious trajectory for a particular idea, so as to reap a better outcome for society. Decades ago, I was told that those in the stands usually thinks that it is easier to do than those on the field of play.

I agree with you iyah. The difference between a 17 and an 18 year old is a matter of nanoseconds. So what is going to occur in these nanoseconds that will suddenly give him/her an "adult" mental capacity?. Factors apart from age, like the severity of the crime, behavioral history, influences/er, home environment etc. must be used to decide the punishment for crimes by a 17 year old "children". The USA for example has tried and sentenced "children" as adults depending on the type of crime and have legally killed "children" found guilty of committing murder.

Two ignorant actions does not make a solution: We will always have malevolent behavior, no matter how hard a society come down on it. Jamaica needs to start paying closer attention to all children, with an emphasis on their socialization, education, and specific needs. As expensive as this will be, we know, in a general kind of way, it will be worth the investment. Perhaps if we, instead, come down hard on the corrupt politicians, and others, ripping off the countries coffers right now ( send dem to GP ), we will have the resources to finance proper child development.
