New version: • Nachts steht Hunger st...
For the sake of historical truth of this song:
The song was written by the Silesian songwriter and youth leader Erich Scholz. There was never a Russian version of this song. It was a song for the German youth movement. The song is about the defeated West Russians Volunteer Army, which fought against the Soviets together with the Freikorps (Iron Division) in the Baltic States 1918-1919.
The West Russian Volunteer Army consisted of released Russian prisoners of war and was set up by the German Empire before the end of the war.

1. Nachts steht Hunger starr in unserm Traum,
tags die Schüsse knallen her vom Waldessaum.

This is why there is a German version: After the 1st world war, the Baltic states were under pressure because Germany lost direct connection to them and also lost a lot of territories. The newly-established Soviet state started to expand and the easiest way was to attack small countries (the Baltic states). The German population in the Baltic states (pretty big) formed, with the help of main-land Germany, a paramilitary force to fight off the Bolsheviks (formed the Freikorps). After the victory in the Baltic states, the Freikorps was declared a terrorist group and thus, unconstitutional. So a lot of ex-Freikorps members (a lot of them were also WW1 veterans) went on and fought in the White Army. Briefing: ex-Freikorps members went on and fought in the White Army. Most of them were German WW1 veterans.

I love how a fellow romanian can explain stuff so good. Buna treaba ! Also to add in this subject. There was this ''West Russian Volunteer Army'',formed by some remaining Freikorps in the Baltics under General Rüdiger von der Goltz (also leader of the kinda famous ''Eiserne Division") and the 'Special Russian Corps' .under General Pavel Bermont-Avalov.(was a cossack btw, thus probably the cossack origin of the song ?).This roughly 50.000 strong army was formed mainly by Freikorps, the russian unit and some russian pow's in german custody.

when i was in the city of haifa in israel i met an elderly woman sitting on her property in front of her house where she sang this song to her grandchildren. When I asked her how she knew this song and, more importantly, where she learned German from, she replied that she comes from East Prussia and that she fled to Palestina at the time of the Third Reich. She said that she is dreaming of returning to Germany to spend her last days there and to die in her home country Germany. but since east prussia no longer exists, it makes no sense for this woman to leave israel. she told me stories about germany and how beautiful this country should be and her stories motivated me to learn the german language.

Besides: Usbekistan, right strong country, great people, rich history... but a totally neurotic illiterate psychopath as a president. What the F*ck is up with all these ex-ussr countries? Kirgistan, Usbekistan, Kasachstan...all are ruled by some pathetic meatheads and disgusting servile administration that should all end rather in some boot camps than having any kind of power.

@@RodrigoBorgia thanks for the nice compliments, that's very kind of you. the problem with the ex soviet republics is because that there were so many undemocratic parties and organizations during the collapse of the soviet union. these organizations overran the governments of the respective countries and the later military and financial aid from russia allowed the dictators to retain their power. i mean check out kasakstan. i believe that the "(president)" has been ruling for 25 years and only with russian aid could uprisings be prevented. In addition, the governments ensure that the people are as premitive and uneducated as possible so that they never get the idea of rebelling. that's why i went to israel immediately after i found out that i had jewish ancestry because i am able to study intelligently there and to live in a democracy. I definitely hope that one day democracy and progress will come to these countries.

My post here for eagle mentions. Where eagle and meaning came from, and when passed away. Germany had historical heritage of holy roman empire, till 1945, it died with third reigh. Russia had historical heritage from eastern roman empire, it died in 1917. Those eagles. Both nations could be best friends and united could form new "roman empire". But anglosacsons flooded with money germany and confused russia, that ended in world wars, at the end killing germany and russia as world powers. At the end, now, germany arent even superpower, russia still is, but weak and may break with death of putin.

@@shisuka6022 The Russophobia in large parts of West Germany scares many East Germans. So much delusion, so much historical blindness, right down to the deepest circles of government. As if they hadn't learned anything from the mistakes made before 1945. there are no two peoples who are more spiritually related than Germans and Russians, and no one in Europe who can look back on a longer common history. The twentieth century destroyed a lot here, and in West Germany in particular there are transatlantic circles who now want to destroy the rest as well. @@MW-wh8hh WW1 was started because of "the black hand" - an assassination group from Serbia with very very "kosher" origins WW2 was started, because England and France declared war on Germany. Hitler sent 42 peace offerings to Britain before and during the war. Germany didn't declare war on anybody, except Russia - but that was more because of broken agreements. I don't need to remind you that most people, civilians at that, died in Russia though - because bolsheviks are just "SUCH NICE PEOPLE" they rack up 100 million dead civilians in 100 years. Besides though. "Millions of lives" lost is a bit of a stretch, when talking about Germany, isn't it? Germany didn't go around Europe and waging war on people - the allies did. 1. Besten Dank, Dr. Ludwig

I love this song and I love the history behind it. It sings to the heart and tells the story of bravery and suffering better than a movie could.

Ooh this is beautiful! I don't know which I like better - the guitar, the voices, the obvious language or how they sing slow, at first, then the rhythm fastens, then slows down again - and repeats! Amazing!(I've heard this kind before, but I can't get over how good it(this song is - and I just came across it!). I'm sorry it took me this long, Dr. Ludwig.

I’ve noticed a common theme for German military songs, they pull no punches when describing the privations the soldiers will face. There not pretentious at all. Stirring, yet melancholy. Bravo gents.
