My daughter, Nadia, is now 30 and I named her after Nadia Comaneci. I remember, I was 14 at the time of the 1976 summer olympics. I was watching the gymnastics events and I heard the name Nadia for the first time. I said at the time, if I ever have a girl, I will name her Nadia. My mother, said - sure, tell me about it 10 years from now. My first child, a girl, was born on Dec. 30, 1986. 1 hour after she was born, my mother asked me - what will you name her. I said, Nadia. I told her, 10 years later. Nadia Comaneci - Still a very beautiful woman.

Yep. I sure did. I was 7 in '76 and I lived and breathed everything Nadia. Sadly I am a 6ft tall woman so gymnastics was never in the cards but I was great on the bars, but only the bars. Hours and hours a day on the bars with callouses so bad my hands would regularly bleed and it was all inspired by Nadia who lit that fire.

However, her life in Romania was troubled and she was once again headline news, this time as she chose to defect risking her life to escape the brutal regime of Nicolae Ceaucescu.

There's one adjective above all others that comes across as the key to Nadia's success... and that is the word 'grounded'. May be part of that is due to her growing up under an oppressive regime, though I doubt that she ever felt repressed. It strikes me that she understood the talents that she'd been given at a very early age, and for her it was about focussing upon those gifts without allowing herself to be distracted in any way. 'Self-doubt' appears to have been an alien-concept to Nadia. Thanks for sharing this interesting interview.

She was being grilled for “dirt” big time but she was able to stand her ground. I’m sure she had a lot more than most other kids during those times due to her fame. She wasn’t aware of how people struggled if she had everything available to her. She could have looked around and noticed what was going on with people. She seemed a bit clueless or is still brain washed to never say anything against the dictator and his gruesome ways. I was there and remember it very well and I got to leave at 13 in 1987.
