2022-EDIT: I want to come back and mention that the drawing on the left at 5:06 - 5:44 is my entry for a DTIYS challenge made by (amazing artist) Chrissabug.
Here's a link to the original post: / cjggfcpd-kd .
I wanted to add this because a few people were under the impression that I stole the artwork due to not crediting Chrissa in the video. That was never my intention, as the drawing was in fact drawn by me, and with DTIYS challenges not having any sort of official ruleset, it's a bit of a gray zone. I just want to teach about art styles in this video and never meant any harm. So I hope this bit clears it up 💖 I love and adore Chrissabug's art and respect them as an artist and content creator. It was truly a pleasure to have taken part in the DTIYS Chrissa hosted.

When I did the exercise, I chose both animators and artists. I watch a lot of animation so I looked for my favourite animators that have a style I admire. Idk if this helps but I guess it proves that it’s not just artists that you can choose from

heres the steps bc i was looking for this when i couldnt rewatch it XD 1- Create a file 2- Save 5-10 images of your favorite artists (1 each artist) 3- Add one of your own peices to this file (preferrably your favorite) 4- Pick your top 3 style features in each piece 5- Do the same for your piece 6- Specify recurring features (until you have no more identical features) - draw characthers with these things MULTIPLE times

I think drawfee put it really well in their “redrawing childhood art” video- they talk about how an art style isn’t something you find, it’s always been a part of you. it’s based on how you default to drawing things and what you like looking at in your art, so as you add new things to that mental library of things you like and techniques you use, that’s how your style evolves, but it’s less of you consciously choosing a specific style and more getting closer to the style that’s been inside you all along. here’s the link for anyone who hasn’t seen it! kzbin.info/www/bejne/moitm3mvqLGGe5o

In some cases, I don't see a problem with switching between two techniques. For example, sometimes I render with soft shading, sometimes I do cell shading or a little bit of both. It depends on what I'm making it for. I kind of see it as changing up the art supply you use!

I used to draw stylised/manga inspired art all the time when I was younger, but for the past 10 years or so I've been doing almost exclusively realistic art. I've been wanting to get back into stylised art, but when I tried I realised I've completely lost my style and understanding of how to draw "exaggerated" features and it made me really sad. I'll definitely be using this to try to get back into stylised art again 😊

Also, when trying to figure out your art style, it is very likely that the art style you really really want your art to look like will not end up being the one you will like for yourself once you get to that level of art. While it's good to take inspiration from others, you may find that you only really like one part of their art style (how they do certain things such as line art, shading, anatomy, expressions, etc.) and that will be reflected in your art. Your style will also change constantly during this time as you try and figure out how other people draw, but naturally, over time (whether you draw every day or draw once every other month) you will discover the things you like and things you don't like. For me, it took over 4 years of trying to find an art style, 2 years of trying to force it to change, and then settling with what I really liked to fully realize that even though I really like other people's art styles (such as Nadiaxel, Laovaan, Ross Draws, Jazza, Horikoshi, etc.) I will never like their art style as my own because my actual style differs from what I enjoy looking at. *Inspiration isn't just a benchmark for an art style, it is the motivation to get to that level of skill.*

And then the immediate application... like this video was informing and also super inspiring! Since I was about 8 years old I’ve been drawing, from having a coloring book as a reference to now , In school I absolutely loved my art and I was away from social media, and I kept at it, as I was bullied more and more the harder I was towards myself. I’m now in 10 months going to be 20 years old and I’m more accepting of my art, realizing I’ll never really be able to be like everybody else right away, and this helped me a lot and I’m a lot happier and more accepting ^^ appreciate you taking the time in helping out, it’s hard when you see someone else doing so well and your stuck in a rut of hating on it, but I looked back in how I used to draw and I seen the massive difference, but Practicing and keeping at , not giving up is the only way really to improve.

I think the hardest thing about art, and why I always seem to cry in frustration when trying to self help with art tip videos, is just that I never learned how to STUDY art. It was always something I could just DO so when my skill level plateaud I never learned or was taught what to do in that situation. Going to other artist's works to "copy" or "emulate" always seems taboo. And trying to find exact model references is a painful and distracting process for me personally. This is the first video where I've made it past the intro and the exercise actually seems doable and might actually teach me how to study something and pick back up what I'm constantly throwing away because of frustration and low self esteem. Thank you so much

That's so interesting, i could not decide at all on 10 drawings , so on my first try i had about 35 drawings in there, often more than from a single artist because different drawings showed better a particular thing i liked about that artists style. I thought i will be overwhelmed, but i noticed, that the things that i started to write about those drawings, were always the same thing, from about 20 artists all the things were overlapping. So i guess i had a favorite style in mind i didn't knew about, haha Even from my own drawings i was liking the same things i liked from other artists. That's was a really exciting revelation to me and such an interesting exercise, now i think i have a much clearer idea what i want to focus on with my next drawings.

Recently I made my own chibi art style, I find out what I liked/looked best I did some trials on the size of certain parts of the character, first I decided on the eyes, big or really big? Lol. Nose or no nose? Thin limbs or thick limbs? And so on and so forth until I had a style that I loved. You can make many things vary, perhaps give it a try yourself and see what you make? Just keep trying different options and the answer should come to you ^-^ good luck

So I used to draw manga, but I noticed it was not my style, so I looked at inspirations which made me create an artstyle with lineless and make it realistic. I will still say everyone can have a different art style, even if it realistic. Anyone could create an art style of an artist within fandoms, but your own art style is still your potential.

A few months ago, I wanted to draw ghirahim for a linktober prompt but I wanted to try something different art-style wise. So I studied how other artists had drawn ghirahim and took what I liked from their portrayals to get a result I was happy with!

you do not know how MUCH this is helping me, when I draw with a anime character reference(or anything) it looks way to similar and looks like I traced even though I don't. I always worry if someone points it out and I was to show proof so most of my art pieces aren't posted.

AAAAAAAAAA This was SO helpful!!!!! Never before have I drawn something and audibly gone "HOOOAAA WHO IS THIS HANDSOME DEVIL?!!!" so many times while realizing I CAN in fact draw like some of my favorite artists.

This popped up in my feed and I had to click it. I'm trying my hand at digital art again for the first time in a very long time. I've never really had a "style", and I've always criticized myself, so watching this has really helped, and I'm def. going to save it to a useful tips playlist.

Thank you for making this video, I’m a moderate beginner artist, I used to draw for years back in the day and I always wanted to draw like some of my favorite artists but never knew how to start. Now I do! I’m so happy! Thanks!

I haven’t produced any art in years due to my fear of not being good enough. I’m really hard on myself when it comes to art. However, I always wanted to explore my possibilities in creating digital art. I recently bought an iPad Pro since I heard Procreate is such a great tool for digital artists to use. I can’t get enough of it! Your video really changed my prospective on developing my own art style. Since my skills are a bit rusty, I’m grateful to have came across your video.

Thank you for posting this, it was very helpful to hear that my artstyle is developing - and probably never will stop. Comparing my artwork to more experienced artists tends to get me down because for obvious reasons (experience) their work is closer to what I want to be able to create myself. Being older than many of those artists I enjoy doesn't really help either, when it makes me feel like I will never reach their 'level' - whatever that is, thank you my brain. I will try out your exercise, and hopefully, it will give me some pointers to what I actually want to aim for in terms of style and skill, rather than compare myself to others as much.

Ive always been inspired by multiple artists and their styles, however i never really had a way to practice putting them all together. Thank u so much for this video. Thank you so much for the brushes and the good advice! I do tattoos and my linework and steady hands allow it... but here where I live, people bring you the pictures they want as tattoos...... I’ve unlearnt the ability to draw from scratch and I find that very sad, as I am no more than a photo copy machine at the moment. This is amazing advice! Thank you!

You can have an art style with and without lineart. It’s just a matter of where you choose to line in the details. You can either leave the outlines of your character lineless and line the inner details such as the face, hands, hair and clothes. Or you can outline the character with lineart and leave the inner details lineless. I think Maya Kern is a great example!

I'm glad you mentioned the free art style, I've always drawn freehanded, but I'm determined to improve my style more and more, but it's so hard. It's like I'm stuck in my way of drawing and it's annoying because I do want to get better with learning different techniques and how to draw eyes, facial expressions, shading and much more. Still I'm grateful that you showed all your improved art styles and it encouraged me to keep at it. I'm curious if drawing my art style on the iPad or another art app with a stylist, will also improve my art style when I draw with a pen and pencil. Either way thank you for taking the time to make this video 😊
