He is like a mad musical genius. I've watched his videos for over a decade. His creativity and authenticity are just incredible. He's got more talent than most ensembles have collectively.

Now, THAT is how to be a creative musician!!! You ROCK!!!! I just discovered this instrument a few months ago & now I have 3 & two more on their way to me. I have 2 from Russia & one from Vietnam. I love them all, but I can now tell the difference in sounds when I play them. Can’t wait to get the others in the mail!!!

Absolut beeindruckend. Ich bin süchtig nach diesem Instrument, dessen Klänge gleichzeitig archaisch und postmodern sind, und das so unglaublich variantenreich und geschichtsträchtig ist. Danke für diese überragende Performance!

Wow such a great performance. I know it's a longshot but how du you make those higher sound (it seems to me you change the base frequency and not only the overtones) I can't understand how you produce them. It does not look and sound like the pedaling technique. Would be very interesting to know how to produce this high destorted sound!

Awsome skills! Really good. Which model of the russian altai khomus by V. Potkin do you use for this video? The round (Potkin I), open (Potkin II) or angular (Potkin III) variant? I play with a german D key jew's harp made by "Schlütter". Damn good tuned instruments, but i'm considering to buy a potkin altaian khomus, cause it has a different unique sound.

Cool stuff! I try to get that special tone you do. The one where you seem to pluck the spring 90 degrees from the normal way. I tried this, I get that sound but its not that clear and loud as you do in the video. Would be awsome if you could give some hints in proper technique to get it work well !
@meddlesomemusic4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the harp. Some reeds sound a secondary tone very loudly when plucked in on themselves, others don't

I just bought my first one today and I can't do it either. I guess it depends on the responsiveness of the metal "tongue" on your instruments.

Hello Nadishana, I took about a month and a half ago 3 mouth harps; as I discovered them I've became intrigued in some sonorities that some of you do. I was wondering if some techniques are exclusive to which mouth harps you are using? I have two hmong and a morchang. I am able to prolonge the sound after a pluck for a good amount of time but I haven't found out how to initiate the tongue in vibrating through only respiration. How is it done and are there mouth harps that are better for that?

WOW! That was incredible! I'm trying to figure out how to do all those techniques. xD For some reason, my jaw harp won't make any noise if I blow through it without plucking. Like at 3:00 in the video.
@kai_plays_khomus6 жыл бұрын
If your harp isn't able to produce this effect, you have to use a finger of the holding hand to push the reed carefully a bit (probably one millimeter) out of its frame, away from your lips. Then you have to inhale powerful to reach the needed underpressure which bends the reed back to the frame and starts the vibration. Blowing the harp without plucking needs a reed which is minimal out of level with the frame.

I didn't know you could do an overtone with a jaw harp.
@kai_plays_khomus6 жыл бұрын
Actually overtone melodys are what they are made for - since the mouth harp was nearly extincted in the western world because of the harmonica/blues harp (which is close related, in fact a construction of several tiny mouth harps in one case) it is probably the most underestimated instrument - but there is a community of masters worldwide which works hard to regain the popularity it has for thousands of years, spread over whole eurasia - which definitly was not the result of the same well known cartoon-sound of a spring again and again ;)
