Hi Anne-Marie, I'm Argentinian, but lie in California now. My great great grandfather is from a town very close to St Jean Pied du Port, and a few years ago we found relatives that still live there. I've visited a couple of times and just love every square inch (and all the food!) of the area (and the whole Euskal Herria). Thanks for the great videos. Aupa!

Wow, it sounds like your family must be really close to where my family is from. You're pretty much the only American I'm not related to that I've heard talk about some of these places. One of my earliest memories is visiting Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. :)

Hi. What I'm going to write may be a bit of a drag for a lot of people but I'd just like to mention that, like Anne-Marie said, Navarre was a medieval kingdom and that (I guess not too many people may know this) part of it was militarily conquered by the recently united Spanish crown (Castille & Aragon). They only conquered the southern side of the Navaresse kingdom because they didn't dare go beyond the Pyrenees. So after that, what remained of the kingdom of Navarre continued but only in Lower or Basse Navarre (Baxe Nafarroa or Nafarroa Beherea). Therefore, during approximateley another 100 years, Navarre continued to be an independent kingdom. In 1620 (exactly 100 years ago, what a coincidence!) the French kingdom integrated it into France.

In the peninsular war the spanish basque country was occupied by french troops of Napoleon for most of the war. Actually, in vitoria-gazteiz (current capital of the basque autonomous comunity) a large battle was fought where an anglo-portuguese-spanish army defeated the french. Furthermore, this army also defeated the french in san sebastian/donostia, another basque city. And finally they expelled the french from the peninsula in the battle of San Martzial, another basque town. Notably, the basque heavily participated in the guerrilla war against the french invaders, which happened all throughout spain.

I love all of the Basque Country, but I don't think it's controversial to say Basse Navarre is the prettiest province, with all of the white and red houses. Basse Navarre, Best Navarre!

What a mania to continue calling the French Basque Country provinces, they do not exist, they do not have an administrative and legal entity, they do not even have a geographical definition anymore, they were vizcounties in the Middle Ages, but since the mid-15th century they ceased to exist to be annexed By France, incorporating into the province of Gascony, only a small territory of Gascony passed to Navarre in the 13th century, Lower Navarre, but in 1620 Navarre was united in the province of Béarn, although it had been united to it since 1479.
