Sony was struggling back then! After the PS3 into PS4 after the great PSN hack Sony sold off a ton of its businesses! And streamlined! You obviously werent around when Motorstorm 3 Was also delayed and caused controversy through no fault of its own though Sony werent keeping studios that werent generating money! Sony killed Sony Japan around the same time! The studio that made Trico took an entire generation! Sony Japan werent pulling in the money or the numbers despite all the fun games... Thats why studios like Naughty Dog and Santa Monica are no wspoken of highly! They turned Sonys fortune around! ND TLOU saved and ended the PS3 gen! Sony also killed Liverpool! of WipEout! these are also my childhood faves along with WRC which i still say is the best WRC game ever! F1 also when Liverpool had the license was awesome!

The lightning effects while driving in thunderstorms is still absolutely bonkers. Always used to set weather to stormy and just go for a drive. It was great how in dynamic weather if you had thunderstorms turned on, you could actually see distant lightning strikes and flashes in the clouds as the weather approached. 👍

Driveclub will be something immensely special, despite its flawed lifecycle.. i was lucky to get everything (minus the bikes) just a week before the game was killed for good.. glad i got the physical copy of it when i bought my ps4. the sounds(holy crap, they are immersive to say the least), the weather effects, the sense of speed... it is something to marvel at and despite being 10 years old, it looks better than most games even today

I downloaded the game again after a couple of yrs. Love the game and the cars. This was way ahead of its time and still holds up in so many ways. I bought the digital version and it's easy to download at anytime. Wish the servers was still available, not just for racing but for the time trials and drift scores that I'd see friends posting when I logged on. Miss that

This game is in my All Time Favorite racing games list. Top 3. The other 2 being the very first Grid and F-Zero GX. The sense of speed in DriveClub was unreal. And the music was awesome as well

Excellent video - thanks!! I've had the digital version of DC for quite some time but never got around to playing it until last week! Been more of a Forza guy over the years. Just maxed out FH5 and both expansions so I figured I would jump into DC -- glad I did! Even without the multiplayer, this is an excellent racer. Still early in my progression but having a blast so far. My only complaint is that DC seems to love having races either at dawn (sun glare) or dusk (darkish). When I create custom races I always select midday so I can see where I'm going. Thanks again!

​@@alex.starostinthey didnt use any kind of cpu tech or logic they just busted their asses with the tracks, graphics, and lighting logic, the ground work was bulking through the tedious rinse and repeat process of creating it, but it paid off. Sadly some folks couldnt over look the lack of car customization but the game checked off on the racing category with a quilt

@@tebander956 it wasn't really the lack of car customisation that put people off. I was there day 1 when it launched. The big problem was that it was a very online focused game with all the clubs anyone could make and compete with the others but the online portion was completely broken at launch and didn't work at all for at least several weeks. That really pissed a lot of people off. I was angry myself. Then the cut promised features like a weather system which was only implemented after half a year. The game was clearly not ready for but Sony refused to delay it more as it was already a full year delayed by that point (it was supposed to be a launch title for PS4). A shame what happened to it

Just picked this up again and 2 challenges is away from completing the main tour! Then it's on to smash through the DLCs as lucky enough to have them all. Absolutely correct in that it's still an awesome game! Still so many current games that can't touch the weather effects and overall graphical polish of DC! That soundtrack too 👌👌

Thanks for reminding me about this game. I bought the physical copy for my ps4 when it first came out but for some reason I never played it. Just stuck it in the ps5 downloaded an update and tried it. What a game, most fun I have had with a racer in ages. Gutted I never got into back when it came out. For a 10 year old game it looks great. Love the tracks, wish gt7 would do point to point racing. Shame no way to get dlc.

@@AdAstra78 Wanting 60fps isn't snobbery when it's a fast paced racing game... It's racing not chess. It's harder to keep track of what's going on with half the frames, and lower frame rates literally have higher input latency making the controls not as precise. Many people hate 30fps and some even get motion sick from the low frames. If anything is snobby it's wanting pretty graphics instead of fluid gameplay, and that's what the devs of DriveClub chose to do--make a pretty game at the cost of fluid motion and controls. There's a reason 75% of PS5 owners choose performance mode over image quality mode (that's a real stat), and it has nothing to do with snobbery.

In a racing game 60 fps is a must but back then those visuals were not possible on console without sacrificing framerates . But now that PS4 emulation became a reality soon we will be able to give this game the treatment it deserves with high resolutions and framerates ax well as enhanced visuals

Evolution is just legendary with weather, just look for footage of WRC4 or WRC Evolved on Wales Rally and you'll be amazed that those graphics are on a PS2

I used to work with an animator who'd worked on this previously (he's at Valve now so clearly pretty handy!)- he'd mostly focused on the car entry animations but talked about how they'd included effects for seat materials to show signs that somebody had sat on them. Utterly pointless since you could never see it but it shows the amount of detail they put into the game. I was gutted with how Evolution were treated by Sony- I know DC had issues after launch but they sorted those and made a really outstanding racing game. The only thing I didn't really like was the garish paint schemes that the AI cars usually sported. Actually one of my early outsource jobs almost 2 decades ago was modelling one of the bikes for Motorstorm.

Use the Bonnet cam and notice how your opponents' cars reflect on the bonnet. I'll need to replay the game again to observe if the player's car also reflects on theirs. Even GT7 on the base PS5 doesn't even reflect opponents' cars on the bonnet or roof cam during gameplay. But then again, GT7 was cross-generation and PD had to build it in a way that runs at 6ofps on a base PS4 console, whereas Driveclub ran at a locked 30fps to pull off those effects on a PS4.

@@222tg_ I bought the disc version years ago and it was one of the game data that was in my "never delete" list for the PS4 hard drive after Evolution was closed down. I wasn't sure if all the patches could still be recovered if the game data was deleted, hence, I kept it.

Won't make any difference! The game engine and all calculations around it, physics, are build around the 30fps frame rate. All you can do is insert artificially generated interpolation frames. Samsung TVs can do that for example. But that is NOT the same.

How is this game so liked.. nothing was good when i got it with my ps4.. totally not playable with controller and it was just a nightmare driving with a g29 Wich i got especially for that game.. i stopped playing driveclub and only started using the g29 again when gran turismo sport came out and it was so enjoyable with the g29 as if it was made for that game. I didn't get that from driveclub

Problem is if anyone picks the game up today on disc and starts playing, they literally are getting the bog standard game without any updates. I'm not even talking about content such as cars and events, I am talking about the later patches it received to the graphics, handling and weather effects. I can remember one big update that came out with even better rain effects as well as snow blizzards that were incredible. But as the servers are no longer there, these fantastic patches and updates will not be available to install. It's a massive shame as the game was slowly improved so much over time in several areas. Buy it now and you are getting it as it was at launch where it actually got mixed reviews.
