WW2 Battles of Kohima and Imphal were the turning point of the Japanese advance west . Had Kohima and Imphal fallen, Japan would have marched unhindered to the Indo Gangetic plains. A number of my family members ( my grandfather's generation) fought at , both Kohima and Imphal. Many survived to tell the tale to us wide eyed kids back in the 1960s.
