Jetsun Khandro Rinpoche taught on Nagarjuna's "Letter to a Friend" on the UC Berkeley campus. amzn.to/3GNOQrN She reviews key issues in a Buddhism 101 or Buddhism for Beginners manner and Rinpoche brings her usual clarity. #buddhism #khandro #nagarjuna
About the text: An exposition of the entire Buddhist path in only 123 verses. A Buddhist classic. Nagarjuna's poetic presentation of the fundamental teachings of the Great Vehicle, or Mahayana, is remarkable for its concise style and memorable imagery, making it one of the most widely quoted sources in other commentaries on the Mahayana path. The great Indian Buddhist master Nagarjuna (first-second century C.E.) wrote his celebrated poem "Letter to a Friend" as a gift of advice to a South Indian king, and it has since become a monument in the Indian shastra tradition.

Greater detail on Nagarjuna and the text: Nagarjuna was a renowned Indian philosopher and Buddhist scholar who lived in the second century CE. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers in the Mahayana Buddhist tradition.
The "Letter to a Friend" is one of Nagarjuna's most famous texts, and is a personal letter of advice to a friend who was seeking guidance on how to achieve enlightenment. The letter covers a wide range of topics, including the nature of reality, the practice of meditation, and the importance of compassion and wisdom.
In the "Letter to a Friend," Nagarjuna emphasizes the importance of understanding the ultimate nature of reality, which he describes as empty of inherent existence. He argues that all phenomena are interdependent and lack a fixed, permanent essence, and that this understanding is crucial for attaining liberation.
Nagarjuna also stresses the importance of developing compassion and wisdom as a means to achieve enlightenment. He argues that these two qualities are interdependent, and that they must be cultivated together in order to achieve the ultimate goal of Buddhist practice.
Overall, the "Letter to a Friend" is a profound and insightful text that provides valuable guidance for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of Buddhist philosophy and practice. Its emphasis on the interconnectedness of all things, and the importance of compassion and wisdom, continues to inspire and guide Buddhist practitioners today.

Here is a link to a talk that Khandro Rinpoche gave called "Practicing in Times of Adversity". It is audio only. As Rinpoche says: "It is a time of unspeakable fear and disruption for most of the world. During such times of crisis and struggle which arise in our lives, our practice could be one of the first things we turn to." @t
