Nagorno-Karabakh: Armenia Demands End to Azerbaijan Blockade Amid Accusations of Genocide

Armenia is calling on the United Nations Security Council to address a worsening humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh, a region of Azerbaijan home to ethnic Armenians that has been under a blockade for eight months. Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought multiple wars over the territory since the collapse of the Soviet Union, most recently in 2020. Azerbaijan closed the only road into the region in December, severely restricting the movement of food, medicine and other supplies for the roughly 120,000 people living there. “We cannot accept a new Armenian genocide in 2023,” says Luis Moreno Ocampo, the Argentine lawyer who served as the first prosecutor of the International Criminal Court. He issued a report earlier this month on the blockade. We also speak with Anna Ohanyan, professor of political science and international relations at Stonehill College, who says Azerbaijan is relying on “the use of hunger as a weapon” in order not to engage politically with the largely self-governing region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Armenia invades Nagorno Karabakh in the 1990s: They ethnically cleanse over 800,000 civilians. Azerbaijan reinvades Nagorno Karabakh in 2020: A few dozen civilians die. That right there is a pretty large and factual compare and contrast when looking at the behavior of the two sides in this dispute. Case closed.

I do know that at least 664,000 and possibly as many as 1.2 million Armenians died during the genocide, either in massacres and individual killings, or from systematic ill treatment, exposure, and starvation. This happened at the hands of Turkish nationalists during WWI who have never acknowledged the commission of this horrific crime and AZ is now engaged in economic and military alliances with Turkey that have contributed to the isolation of Armenia. Will AZ repudiate anyone who denies Turkish responsibility for the Armenian genocide and will AZ work with the Armenians to uphold the rights of both peoples? Ethnic cleansing and nationalist land grabs are reactionary no matter who commits these crimes.

Democracy Now, please do some research on the overall conflict and what the original cause was and why it continues today for the same reasons. Here are 9 indisputable historical facts: 1. Azerbaijan has been occupying this territory that legally belongs to Armenia, since 1917. 2. The country of “Azerbaidjan” was created out of thin air by the Young Turk, Enver Pasha, who was from the Ottoman Empire’s government, along with the British. 3. The “Azeris” at that time of creation were the ethnic Tatars. 4. The sole reason for this creation was for the oil found on Armenian territory that prior to 1917, was under the protection of the Russian Empire. 5. Since 1917, the British have dominated the oil industry in Azerbaijan. The largest British entity being British Petroleum, who today produced 77% of the energy resources in Azerbaijan, and exports 95% of them. 6. The establishment of Azerbaijan in 1917, was reported in the news papers of that time. On August 23, 1920, the Winston-Salem Journal (which can be found online), outlined how Azerbaijan was created and by who. The whistle-blower was a U.S. Army Colonel, who would retire as a Brigadier General, James Alexander Ulio (1882-1958). 7. Since 1917, Armenia has never entered into a fully ratified, legally binding, peace treaty, surrendering any territory to anyone. 8. The territory in question under international law, legally belongs to Armenia (since the only tool used for transfer ownership of territory is a peace treaty) and is under occupation by Azerbaijan. 9. The solution is easy, just leave internationally recognized lands of Azerbaijan and go back Armenia. Border of the republic of Azerbaijan is recognized by the international law. And Nagorno Karabakh is within the borders and of it. So, if peace living there are not happy with living in once occupied lands they can go back to their country. Fair enough. Nothing is above the law. And Law say that territory belongs to Azerbaijan

The Azeri’s are claiming sovereignty over is subject to liberation by order of the UN Security Council, who are mandated to pass a resolution calling for sanctions and if need be, a coalition force, to liberate the Armenian territories held by Azerbaijan. This force would exclude those countries who can be considered parties to the dispute, including Briton, Russia and Turkey. We also know that such a viable process is at the disposal of the UN Security Council, as we saw it carried out in 1990 with the liberation of Kuwait from Iraq.

Lachin road is not only road to Karabakh, there is another road from Agdam city to Karabakh. This road has been blocated by armenians themselves by cement blocks. Azerbaijan ready to delivery food and other products to Karabakh, armenian citizens of Karabakh refused to accept it.

Armenians have blocked that agdam road recently. Lachine has been blockaded by the fake eco-activists for 8 months now. If Azerbajian wanted to help, they had more than 7 months to use Agdam. Even if Azerbaijan wanted to send help, Armenians living there don't trust the authirirerian shady regime or let them enter into their city and start vandalism and further anti- Armenian activities commonly violated in the last 2 years in the captured region and between 1998 to 2005 in Nakhjevan.

Why don't you listen to the other side on Nagorno-KArabak? Maybe there are connections of NK to mainland Azerbaijan, maybe they don't have to get everything from Armenia. If Armenia doesn't open the Zengezur road as promised for peace, Azerbaikan can block the Lachin corridor.

Anyhow Karabakh is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan. Azeri IDPs should be able to return to their homes in Karabakh from which they were forcebly evicted.
