While the US had good luck and the Japanese had bad luck the Japanese seemed to have compounded their bad luck. As has been pointed out the Japanese fetish for the decisive battle was a serious error.

Locking onto a strategy that will win the war with "one big move" is an obsession in many militaries. During WWI, Gen Hague (Sp?) thought that all the British needed was one big cavalry charge through German lines. This would be followed by infantry who would pivot and encircle half of the Germans. He set up numerous times, had many false starts, but never got his charge. There was also the Italian mindset that they were the true rulers of the Adriatic Sea. They only needed to get through Slovenia and Croatia and then drive straight to the Greek border. They led 11 assaults through the same area, each with tens of thousands of men. Each failed, ending in another meat grinder and stalemate.

The IJN didn’t appreciate the fact that “Hope isn’t a strategy”. They consistently put their preconceived view of ahead of facts, whether it was to launch a surprise attack on the Americans at Pearl, set a trap at Midway or a thousand other scenarios during the war.
