In that vid that sent reddit into a frenzy she didn't actually say that she was thinking it wasn't worth it. Quite the contrary - she said that she felt sad that she didn't pull the numbers because of the expectations that she pulls her weight within the Hololive company, but to her the fans that she has are worth a lot, no matter the number.

it also wasnt just the people from reddit that got her sub count to go up. right at that time she didnt do anythign but stream ark every day for hours. while its nice that she likes the game the fact that it was all she did played a big role in why she didnt grow as fast as others. and because her content stagnated so did her numbers. after she was told by a lot of people that she needs to diversify her content she eventually caved and did just that. and along with the reddit boys her sub count shot up a lot.

She did try to diversify a bit before that happened, but her views were often even lower than with Ark, so she probably got discouraged. But then she got a bunch of new eyes on her content and she started to diversify again and do more collabs, which meant that initial boost wasn't just a fluke.

Aki has an interesting place in Hololive history and more specifically r/Hololive history. Einnashu's video about her low subs count blew up on r/Hololive early August and at that point Cover Corp hadn't really embraced the overseas bro's. Coco's first reddit meme review had only been a few weeks earlier and it was only her, Kanata and Artia who interacted with the subreddit. After the Einnasshu video, Aki's subs went from 186k to over 200k in a matter of hours and when she did her thank you for 200k stream I think her subs were well over 210k and still rising quickly. Her use of english and using some of the reddit memes in that stream was a nice touch too. After this we started to see just a bit more interaction for the overseas bros from a lot of the Hololive talent with many of them joining the subreddit. I believe that the growth of the jp vtubers overseas would have happened anyway but the incredible response to Aki made Cover aware of just what a resource that the subreddit was and also, that they genuinely had a huge overseas market.

I think the notice of a few other girls thanks to the oversea-bros helped a bit too... take Towa for example who had a bit of a rough start due to an oopsie she made early on which killed a lot of momentum (idol culture being idol culture) things like that mean very little over here in the west though and she got quite a lot of growth after the oversea-invasion.
