It's forbidden because a shitload of people used to go try to find the tree. The problem is too much walking around tree roots (for some species) is to compress the soil resulting in potentialy killing the tree. + some of the "tourists" had no respect for the place and let on site a shitload of garbage. So yeah better fuck off from the tree, and the only way for some to understand this is by menacing them with this kind of laws.

Keep these locations secret. Otherwise you can be sure some fool will come along to vandalize or kill it. “This is why we can’t have nice things” usually means “this is why humans shouldn’t know about it.”

well it would appear it is the government itself which is stopping us from seeing it, not some theoretical future visitors. What moral right does one person have to stop another person from visiting a tree on this planet? A government has no more right to stop me from visiting a tree in a public space than a vandal has to damage it. Yet one is illegal while the other is enforced. At least the theoretical vandal does not tax me before he robs me of the joy of visiting the tree.

The picture with it towering over all the other trees isn’t real lol. Hyperion is surrounded by trees of similar sizes, and the foliage is so thick that at the ground level you cannot tell its any taller than any tree around it. From an aerial view you also would need to be extremely close to really notice the difference, which no plane or helicopter is going to go that low because foliage can be disorienting from above. Long story short, the real tree, is very well blended in with its surroundings.

Imaging the the stories a core sample could tell as to the history of the climate over the last 1000 years. I am amazed it has not been assaulted in the name of science. What a beautiful tree, I wonder how much oxygen it generates daily. The water consumption has to be off the chart.

It would be the same story all the other 800 year old trees have told already many times. And considering that tree samples that include the last 100 years don’t show any deviation from previous centuries, even though in the last 100 years we have had the most extreme climate ever, probably in billions of years, the value of those rings is quite questionable

The largest butternut tree in the state of North Carolina is standing by the creek in my grandparents front yard. Im pretty sure it's just the largest in the state and not the country. Next time I go over there I'll have to remind myself to look at the certificate that the US Forest Service and TVA gave them when they came out and measured it. Well anyway it's in Cherokee County,NC.
