It’s an excellent analysis of the sermon. My biggest concern though is men taking this as a reason to (continue) putting down women in their communities and thinking that they are superior to women. This goes against the Prophet’s and the Imams’ practices and will only result in greater inequality. Before us men fill our chests with ego and pride, don’t forget how some of the most proficient narrators of Hadith and jurisprudence were the mother and the wife of Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (AS).

Being a woman I believe the Imam was speaking against the backdrop of Jamal and the prevalent culture. I think the Imam would respect any woman of talent, integrity and leadership qualities. He got along perfectly with an independent minded entrepreneur Bibi Khadija ! And isn’t he the one that sat down with Fatima Zahra and penned the sahifa ?

Masha Allah, it was a brilliant lecture, My Yoga Guru, Parmahansa Yoganada, whose voice is on tape still till this day once said: Reason is upper most with men and feelings and emotions is upper most with women. So that each can complete one another and bring harmony in life. Sayed Ammar Nakshawani did a fantastic job of explaining this topic from so many different angles. I wish, he will be the president of Iraq someday. On another note, Sheikh Mohammed Al-Hilli gave a lecture about the same sermon a few days ago. First of all, it was very insensitive of him to completely call this sermon as a fake and that it was not a part of NahjalBlagha. Secondly, it was very insensitive of him to attack NahjalBlagha without doing his home work and without realizing that Ammar Nakshawani is doing such a phenomenal job of covering this topic through out the holy month of Ramadan. Thirdly, Mri. Al=Hilli did not even take into consideration the Holy Quran and its verses regarding the topic. Sheikh Mohammed Al-Hilli only degraded himself.

Even the last part which is narrated in Al kafi is problematic as it claims Imam Ali a.s says “do not obey them in good so they do not tempt you in bad” imam Ali a.s is the pillar of justice and fairness, how can he say do not obey them in good? Now you will make the women not receive good or bad which will make them greedy to gain good and bad from you.

The explanation is great. but a woman is not blamed for her not praying/fasting during her menstrual period. she is in fact obeying Allah by not fasting or praying during that time of the month. so to say that a woman is deficient in faith because of this, i couldn't understand. because men and women both are judged equally in terms of faith and worship, and the woman is not blamed for not fasting during menstruation. but about the other two things mentioned in the sermon, i as a woman agree with. but something in the sermon that i found odd was the generalization of women. either way, Allah knows best. :)

Valid point. Same with the other parts, Allah decided the inheritance and Allah instructed us in 1 witness or 2 witnesses. And we women humbly accept it and follow even though many of us may not understand or agree. Why is that not mentioned? Why didn’t Imam Ali as talk about the huuuuuge deficiencies of men? How they are pathetic fathers most of the time. Despicable husbands! And don’t even have words to describe how badly they treat their parents (and siblings esp sisters)!

@Saiyedda Jawad Poor akhlaaq, lack of responsibility and care is not exclusive to men. Women nowadays (not all of course) are glued to social media whilst neglecting the kids, beautifying themselves for the public but not their husband, busy chasing the world rather than spirituality... just to name a few of the challenges I've faced as a man married to a woman. The door swings both ways.

@@saiyeddajawad396 I think you are mixing things… some things come under Allah’s laws but Allah’s laws don’t include the way some men behave, that is simply poor upbringing and not assuming responsibilities from when they are young and having poor examples of parents, that has nothing to do with Islam and it’s laws. The men of those times were totally different than men of our times where women are working and taking care of the home. We take the independence too far sometimes and men take it for granted! But that is how societies have progressed over time unfortunately. As for having two witnesses as women vs one as a man, women are known to be very emotional and this is a chemical reaction in their bodies which are hormone driven which fluctuate in women so does their feelings, which changes several times in a day accordingly. That is just how we are made. I know there are women who are exceptions but I mean generally. Therefore you need reliability when it comes to being a witness

I have always struggled to digest this sermon and other sayings of Imam Ali (a.s) regarding women. I don’t doubt these are Maula’s words because nothing else in Nehjulbalagha is anything but absolutely sublime wisdom. So to question the authenticity of his sayings regarding women especially since like you said, every saying about women in Nahjulbalagha carries along an explanation that, at least, does not contradict anything in the Quran. I would like to believe that perhaps the respected English translator of Nahjulbalagha used the word ‘intelligence’ as this seemed to be closest to the Arabic word that Maula has used, acknowledging that Arabic is a deep language with numerous polysemous words (of course you would know better). Is Maula referring to women’s tendency to exaggerate? I mean women do have a natural inclination to embellish speech and be indecicive just as men tend to be egotistical and have inflated self-confidence (whether or not they are knowledgable or intelligent). I know far too many women with high IQ and EQ to think that women are any less ‘intelligent’ (what we understand this word to mean in English) than men -yes one could argue men and women are smarter than each other in different ways. With respect to deficiency in faith by this criterion, most men I know in present day, are more deficient in faith than the women I know. What is even more difficult to understand is the following: ‘Do not consult women because their view is weak and their determination unstable. Cover their eyes by keeping them under the veil because strictness of veiling keeps them for long. Their coming out is not worse than your allowing an unreliable man to visit them. If you can manage that they should not know anyone other than you, do so. Do not allow a woman matters other than those about hereself, because a woman is a flower not an administrator.’ If one takes this literally then (a) women don’t have the capacity to make informed decisions and (b) women shouldn’t even get out of their houses and should not really have a profession that requires them to leave the house. Again, I know many extremely smart women who happen to be outstanding doctors, bankers and lawyers and some of whom I consult for my health, banking and legal matters. Also the Prophet (p.b.u.h)said something to the effect that you must get education and go to china for it even if you have to (meaning thereby: travel abroad to far off lands if you have to, to get education). He did not say that this is just for men. It is meant for muslim men AND women. I am willing to believe that by (b), Imam Ali (a.s) means that women should observe hijab and keep their interactions strictly business when dealing with non-mehram men in educational and work environments. I don’t know what to make of (a) though…But if Maula said it, it has to be taken as absolutely legit- I just need to find out the context for it. Bibi Zainab(a.s), for example, is not a declared masoom (even though both her parents were infallible). Her performance throughout the battle of Karbala and post Karbala was phenomenal and flawless. Her sermons are testimony of her extremely high intelligence, her ability to lead and manage the other ladies especially when the 4th Imam (a.s) was ill and after the massacre is nothing short of spectacular. One could say the same about several other women, like you mentioned, who have been great leaders. (I would not include Benazir Bhutto among ‘great’ leaders, though) So I would like to believe that Maula may be referring to that one particular individual, and uses the word 'woman' instead of her name to avoid defaming her for eternity. The same might be true for the saying ' A woman is a scorpian whose grip is sweet'

If one could analyze the speech pattern (speaking as a linguist ) the word choice of naqs/ deficient isn’t a word imam ali (as) a maasum would use with such a harsh connotation… it’s a little ironic that this would be in nahjul balagha because you know.. we are ideally dealing with a collection of eloquent sayings of the imam (as). I believe that’s why some scholars deny this narration to be authentic. If indeed this is true… it is if tremendous importance that this narration be examined vis a vis the battle of Jamal and Aisha. I don’t know in what other context imam ali (as) has spoken so bluntly and admonishingly (perhaps regarding the caliphs?) I’ve been a revert for about a decade but I have never been able to go to formal classes or a Shia mosque regularly so I do not know everything but I know enough from watching sayed ammars lectures that imam ali (as) was not a vengeful person. And so… if indeed this narration is authentic then that goes to show how devastating Aisha’s betrayal and should definitely serve as proof as to why we as Shias do not and should not forgive her or praise her

The Imam using metaphor is being taken WAY too literal by some people, in order to justify false indignation. In Sermon 69, Imam Ali (AS) compares life to a snake. Its touch is soft, but its poison is lethal. So, is Imam Ali, anti-life? Does he hate life and all that is in it, because he compares it to a snake? If Shakespeare was to say this, the VAST majority of you would be falling over yourselves to scream "genius". A lot of you women and feminist men need to check yourselves a little. How brittle can you be? Men, women, life, enemies, friends, etc. ALL are warned about by Imam Ali in Nahjul Balagha. You can either be offended, and close your eyes to its lesson, OR, you can open your eyes and try to understand the reasonings behind the Imam's intent.

Naray Takbeer Allah U Akbar... Naray Haideriii, I believe my sisters will reply to this and accept what Moula Ameerul Ul Momineen Ali as has said .... And Imam Ali AS gave such a ferocious sermon in order to awaken men against women's tyranny to ensure that no man in future allows a woman to lead them and become another Ayesha. Bcz Imam Ameerul Ul Momineen AS point here in this sermon is that if you give that much power to a woman, she can be such a terror bringer that can get more than 20000 Muslims killed on a battlefield. Don't we see in our households, as soon as the males start accepting their wives demands, they become more arrogant, toxic, and a headache.

This is a callous misreading. He says that their touch is "sweet", but is deadly like a scorpion. Meaning, men be wary of yourselves and do not transgress. It has nothing to do with looking down on women. The stories of men falling because of their lavishness with women are proclaimed throughout the Bible and Qur'an. History is repeated with these stories. Saying 61 fits with saying 57, "contentment is wealth that does not diminish". And, saying 59. One who warns you is like one who gives you good tidings.
