29 months ago I was sitting in a rehab for the third time. I had completed it twice prior. I didn't want to be there. I hated myself I hated everybody around me I hated everybody in general. Except my children I've always loved my babies. Anyway.. so we had this group called music recreation. The clients... Us... We could each pick a song and then have the music video played and then explained how that would pertain to recovery. Well this song came on not this version of it it was the gondola sessions but at any rate it was this song. So I'm sitting there with a mind and a heart full of hatred. And I was half-heartedly listening to what he was saying but I wasn't really into it. And then at the 4 minute 30 second mark when he spoke the words, "today is a good day for my ego to die..." .... I cracked. Now I was always raised well let me back up.. my dad died when I was six I was raised by a single mother who had no idea how to raise a boy. She taught me respect for women always always and if I couldn't be tough I had to pretend that I was. Never show weakness always be the aggressor if in fact you're around individuals that pose a threat in any way shape or form. And if anybody ever does get a shot off at you in any aspect.. you come back tenfold and you return that favor. So from 6 years old 7 years old.. right up to that moment in time that's how I lived my life. I hardly ever cried. I kept everything in all the time I've never been one to talk about my feelings or how I felt about anything unless I was pissed off and somebody was a target for me. And I don't mean like killing I've never done that. That's not what I mean. Anyway.. so you can imagine the amount of hatred and just negativity that I had flowing through me all the time. I numbed a lot of that by using fentanyl and methamphetamine. I died three times. I lost my wife I lost my children my home my job I lost absolutely everything. As a direct result of my actions or my lack of actions. So there I was.. sitting in rehab again around people I didn't know didn't care to know and then I heard those words... .... In those moments I felt this Rush of heat my whole body went flush instantly and something died inside of me but at the same moment something was born. I dropped my head to the table and I let it all out. In front of 43 other men. Now based on what I just told you you can probably assume and be safe in your assumption that I never cried around another guy ever. Ever ever ever. I didn't care in that rehab in those moments I didn't give a shit if every single one of them looked at me like I was weak I did not care. That was the beginning of the journey I'm still on. That was 29 months ago. That song saved my life. I've listened to it literally hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of times since then. Anytime that I feel like I'm about to slip off that razor's edge and start Free falling again I listen to that and a bunch of his other work as well. So when I tell you that this man's music saves lives.. I'm not kidding. I know that some of you are very well aware of this. And I stopped and I think you know I could have been in an infinite number of places but I was there in those moments even though I didn't want to be I still was. And I am at a bit of a loss for words regarding how that makes me feel. I don't know if I was meant to be there or if it was blind luck I have no idea but I was there. And I'm very very thankful and very blessed to have been there in those moments otherwise who knows what I would be now? I probably be dead I'm certain of it. I knew that if I left that rehab I wasn't coming back. I knew if I left that rehab that was it. I was going to go out there I was going to buy whatever drug I can get my hands on and do as much of it as I could and probably and my life. God knows I can't tell you how many times I've come hairs with from doing it. These days I don't think like that. Listening to this song and then other songs that he has put out there.. it has allowed me to I guess you could say soften up a little bit. That's one way to look at it. I've learned forgiveness. I've been single now for a long time. And that needs to happen as well I'm relearning what love means to me. I'm not saying I was a bad person.. but I was not very desirable to be around. It was pretty bad. I got a new lease on life that day. And I'm not where I want to be but I'm certainly nowhere near where I used to be. I go around to various rehabs and I tell my story. It takes about an hour and a half to really tell it the way it should be told and the reason that I do that is because I try to inspire hope in others. You've heard that saying.. well if I can do it you can do it.. it's very cliche. But I was on the end where I didn't think I could do it I was convinced I couldn't. I knew I couldn't. ... But here I am 29 months later alive. I will always identify as an addict but now I identify as an addict in recovery. I don't glorify what I've been through and what I've experienced because I don't want to take from somebody else's story. That's their story it's unique to them yours is unique to you mine is unique to me. And I usually will tell people that before I begin because I don't want them to think that I'm trying to convey the message that I had it worse than anybody. Because I know I didn't. Some of us don't make it this far some of us don't even make it to a rehab. I am 1000% convinced that if I was not there that day in those moments.. I'm certain I wouldn't be here today. And who knows what kind of hell or shit show I would have caused for anybody around me after that. I don't want to know. Because it didn't go down that path. He never ceases to amaze me the effect that people can have on others when they take their story and they can put it into music. I know a lot of you relate to quite a few of his songs.. almost as though it's part of your story. Am I right? This man has a very unique gift to be able to do that but still tell his story his way. the ways of the native American are just.. let's just say if I can find half of the peace of mind that he has found I will have found my nirvana. Music is a very very powerful powerful thing. You can't see it you can't touch it you can hear it.. and you sure as hell can feel it. For those of you that are still reading I'm going to give you another musical suggestion. Please humor me it will only take a few minutes out of your life. And you may discover some new music. So I want to start by saying these guys are Mongolian they do not speak english. They do not sing in English either... There is a band called The Hu. One song in particular goes by the name of "Shireg Shireg"... I listened to a bunch of their songs before I googled the translation. You can feel this music you don't have to understand what they're saying to be able to feel it. Please humor me any of you that are reading this right now just type in that band and that song and see what happens. Maybe you don't like it I don't know or.. maybe just maybe you'll love it and you know you'll start listening to them on a regular basis. Again they don't speak English at all. Everything that they sing is in mongolian. Now I for one haven't got a clue how to speak that language. But man.. I felt that in my very soul when I heard it I still do. And then I translate it and I read what it means in English and it blew me away it really did. I'm not going to spoil a surprise. But if you do choose to listen to it and you get that emotional response that I had or one similar to it.. utilize Google and translate it. It's good it's real good. If you're still reading.. thank you for reading my very ADHD rant I appreciate it. And for any of you that are suffering.. don't give up. Tomorrow could be the best day of your life. If you give up you will never know. Stay safe and God bless 🙏🙏

@@angelagregory2375I'm still here. 3 years 9 months into this recovery of mine I'm still alive. I've been single for 30 months I'm not liking that very much but hey that had to happen to. But I'm still here. Going strong. I went from well everything in that original message of mine now I've got custody of two of my daughters I own my own home again I've got my own thriving business... Don't get me wrong I still have issues with severe depression PTSD and whatnot but I'm here. I wish I could meet this man give him a hug and say thank you. 🙏

I love Nahko and Medicine For The People. The truth in his songs, the symbolism, the melodies, the Spirit in those songs crack my heart open and bring tears to my eyes. I'm 65 and I listen to this music over and over. If there is hope for the World it's from young folk like this. 💞

ME TOO..I am 59 and I feel a great deal of hope for the youth of today when I hear this......the youth are thinking for themselves, not just wiling to go along to conform ....they are trying to think outside the box, and come up with creative solutions, and thats what we need today, the use of creative intelligence....

What a relevant and appreciated perspective. This is relevant and necessary music. Funnily enough, there are those that say all music of the last 10+ years is the same. That's what worries me.

I am 26 but I wholeheartedly agree. I have been listening to Nahko pretty much on repeat for a long time now and I am still brought to tears often. Love letters to God resonates with me on a really, really deep level. I cry almost every time. This song is just so powerful. "Teach us to let go of all of our pain"

3:50 is a good song verse he sings. Red hands, red land, red worship Red hands, red land, red worship Just then I heard bush mama crying in the chasms For a stolen generation And the children that haven't Come home, come home, stay home Come home, come home, stay home My bullets are my words And my words are my weapons Chain me to the pipeline For our rivers and mountains, we scream Today's a good day for my ego to die Today's a good day for my ego to die Spirit, live on in my heart In my body, my mind In my body, my mind

We are part of something special We are part of something special We're a part of something special It's a crack in time A wrinkle Fallen from the nest Young eagle I will pull my feathers out Stay humble Stay humble Stay humble Stay humble, ooh oh Stay humble Uncle Mana taught us like an elder Took us under older brother, He said, This is powerful country This is powerful country And we felt like we were returning To our land rebels And the shepherds in the sea The takers are taking, what the leavers'll leave, So grieve me the black prince cicada Such a loud voice for a tiny creature Well, teach me to let go of all of our pain I Do forgive I Don't forget these things I Do forgive I Don't forget these things Well we burn the bluegum for a safe passageway Drink of the earth Smoke a the dirt, n' my warpaint was red ochre clay H'okay My warpaint was red ochre clay H'okay Red ochre clay Well, Our prayers igniting, cast out, into the shire And the song of our struggle Came straight from the fire, It goes: Holy holy, grandmother, We sing: Wash us clean of our Pain and Suffering. Give us strength for our new beginnings In my deepest thanks I'll sing: It'll Wash away, it will wash away Lift 'em up! It'll Wash away, it will wash away Lift 'em up! It'll Wash away, it will wash away Lift 'em up! It'll Wash away, it will wash away Lift 'em up! Woah Ooh lift 'em up! Woah Ooh lift 'em up! Woah Ooh lift 'em up! Woah Ooh lift 'em up! In my dreams you were an aboriginal man. Gave me your hat, And your past in one hand You said, you've come to be, with rainbow serpent. Red hands, Red land Red worship Red hands, Red land Red worship Just then, I heard bush mama crying in the chasms For the stolen generation and the children that haven't- Come home Come home Stay home Come home Come home Stay home My bullets are my words and my words are my weapons Chain me to the pipeline for our rivers and mountains We scream!.. Today's a good day for my ego to die! Today's a good day for my ego to die! Spirit live on in my heart, In my body, my mind. In my body, my mind. Then sister crow came with the murder that day So we tattoed the bird nation onto our faces. She said we sing to let go of all of our pain We dance the story to remember when things Cha-anged Remember when things Cha--anged Remember, when things Changed. Holy holy, Grandmother, we sing: Wash us clean of our Pain and Suffering Give us strength For our new beginnings In my deepest thanks, I'll sing It'll Wash away, it will wash away Lift 'em up It'll wash away, it will wash away Lift 'em up It'll wash away, it will wash away Lift 'em up It'll wash away, it will wash away Lift 'em up Woah Ooh lift 'em up Woah Ooh lift 'em up Woah Ooh lift 'em up Woah Ooh lift 'em up We danced the ghost dance in two separate countries To this old song So familiar to memory The road will teach you how to love and let go It can be Lonely but It's the Only thing, that we've ever known It can be Lonely but It's the Only thing, that we've ever known Our mommas told us Let go of jealousy And for vagabonds and vagrants, that won't come so easy We've come from nothing. Nothing We've come from nothing Nothing! So, teach me to love you, in a different way. Same cuts, same guts. Same crazy Same cuts, same guts. Same crazy I traveled halfway across the country and back Only to find love, undefined. And I'm 'OK' with that. Cuz I'm gonna be a guardian Be a man among men Be a guardian Be a man among men Or be a woman among women Be a guardian. Be my friend. Ooh, Be my friend, Ooohh We're apart of something special We're apart of something special We're apart of something special! It's a crack in time. A wrinkle Fallen from the nest. Young eagle I will pull my feathers out, Stay Humble.. Stay Humble.. Stay Humble.. Stay Humble.. STAY Humble Woah oh oh Oh oh oh

Delayed response here but I agree completely. I consider this due to the fact that certain religions have lost their authentic 'true' feeling and it becomes more about who can pray louder etc. the music I feel from Nahko is naturally spiritual and we can all feel it on some sort of level because we are naturally spiritual at our core and especially when it comes to our mother Nature.

dear nahko, i sit here on my sons 5th birthday, in tears listening to this song. as its his favorite. and the only song he will fall asleep to. i want to thank you, for your courage and bravery for standing for what you believe in... as for me...i sit in tears because i am still stuck...stuck in the matrix finding my way home....i thank you tho because your words help me every day to make better choices even when i know i will never be perfect...... thank you from the bottom of my being.... ive been using youtube for a vlog and it seems to get some support and love...yet my journey is only beginning to blossom....i love you nahko and every thing you stand for......i will see you on the other side. and please if you ever get a moment....check out my channel...it would mean alot to me and my kids...

OMG. Nahko is in the van. When I first saw Mike Love, I fell in love with him and Sam or was it their music or was it the words. THEN I saw Nahko. I fell in love with his story, his purity, his look - okay all superficial. But can I repeat the same love of Nahko's music and words. What if those to jammed together?? Good question. Nahko, come to So America. You seem to be a troubadour. What lessons would you teach/learn here in the Andes where Pachamama's Kundalini resides? Good question. BLESS THE TRUTH TELLERS.
