This is a great little introduction to tango music. As someone who has danced tango (as a total amateur) for about 12 years, and has DJed a couple hundred milongas (milonga is the word for a tango party, as well as the word for a lively subgenre of tango music), I'm going to add a few comments. Your description of the collision of rhythms from different cultures in tango music is excellent. I would offer a simpler description: tango music is what you get when you mix simple folk music forms with the emotionalism of Italian opera (tango was especially popular among the Italian immigrants in Argentina, and most of the key musical figures are of Italian descent, thus names like Di Sarli, Troilo, Canaro, Lomuto, etc.). Piazzolla -- from the dancers' perspective -- is in a different category. He saw that the emotionalism in tango could be allied to more complex forms and made into "serious" music for the stage rather than the dance hall. You will not find Piazzolla's music played at most tango social dance functions, though it is often used by stage performers (all of whose dancing is pre-choreographed, in contrast to social dancers who are, of course, making it up as they go along) because of its sophistication (and beauty, of course). The tango composer whose music is, arguably, most like Piazzolla's but who is still in the repertoire for social dancers, is Pugliese. By the way, I really enjoyed your solo piano piece. It is in the style of Piazzolla, I would say, but takes Piazzolla into new territory. Love it. I hope you do an entire album (do albums still exist?) of tango pieces. I would happily buy and listen. Thanks for the great video. 🤓

@@NahreSol if you wanted to venture into the "strict tempo" music preferred by social dancers (as they are generally improvising as they go, as opposed to choreographed performers), I promise you would have a loyal and consistent following worldwide. Having taught partnered/ballroom dance for a while, it is exhausting trying to wade through piles of music to find pieces appropriate for a studio situation, or a recreational social dancing situation. Rhythmic inflections are standard for performers, but a nightmare for beginners, or partners at different levels than each other. So there tend to be a handful of rumbas, foxtrots, sambas ,waltzes, tangos, etc played over and over. Compound this with the existence of different styles and levels of each of those dances (e.g. American Rumba vs International Rumba, Argentine Tango vs Ballroom Tango), well, the choices are limited. Whether in composition or recorded performance, there's a niche eagerly waiting for you :)

I’m freaking out about this video right now! I’m apart of what is believed to be the only high school tango orchestra in the US. We have 2 directors, one plays the bandoneon and the other plays violin. They have both traveled to Argentina and were able to see Julian Peralta and his group Astillero live. We play anywhere from the golden age of tango to modern. My instructors have also flown out a bandoneon player and a dance instructor for a week (his name is Ben Bogart, look him up on youtube!). Bogart was able to teach our group so much about Tango and even taught us how to dance a Tango. Tango is one of the most underrated genres of music and I hope more people discover it over time!

It is important to have people like you, an accomplished, conservatory-trained classical musician who also respects the genres you explore, to inform the non-Tango world about this beautiful tradition that I adore so much. I myself, as a violinist, started learning how to actually play this music about 16 years ago and currently playing the music with New York tangueros pretty frequently (also played with Estigarribia a few times). I find that, like you said, a lot of classical musicians love playing Piazzolla and tango music, but are pretty misinformed. Tango born from that same incredible meld of contradanse and West African clave-like cells as Son, Salsa, and so many fantastic Latin American music styles, past and present. You always reach far in your pieces, sometimes the subject gets left behind a bit. There is no one beyond Piazolla, but classic tango is the context to measure his crazy wonderful travel. There is not a fight "Piazzola is tango or not" any longer, but there is a clear distinction between the rigid and danzable style and the expresiveness of some compositions. Very good work! I dare to suggest one more step: before dancing, tango is also lyrics, it is a message, it is a reality that overwhelms, an intensity of expression, with a feeling of nostalgia. For that, a good start is to study some tango lyrics, to understand how those feelings and sensations are sublimated in a musical composition. Tuning in to that frequency allows to give a composition a plus at the moment of interpretation.

It would be nice If you made a video about Brazilian music style called Choro (aka Chorinho). There's really good composers in this genre, for example Ernesto Nazareth , Pixinguinha, Chiquinha Gonzaga, Zequinha de Abreu, Radamés Gnatalli,Garoto, Jacob do Bandolim, Waldir Azevedo (composer of " Brasileirinho" and "Pedacinho do Céu "), Villa Lobos , Darius Milhaud and many others.

I think she would love Gnattali's piano music, if she doesn't know it already. Choro is amazing!

Everything you touch turns to gold. Including, apparently, Tango. Thanks for this.

I saw this post a few hours before on Instagram. Though this is a tango piece, I can hear some of your individual style which makes this tango unique. Btw, Bobby looks so cute!

Nahre, amazing video! The only thing that I think you missed was to mention the great Horacio Salgán, to me one of the greatests tango (and great in other genres too) arranger and composer. I strongly recommend you to listen to the 2 first albums with his orquesta típica "Horacio Salgán en RCA víctor" and also the "Salgán - Amicarelli, dos virtuosos del tango". This last one includes argentinian folklore, tango, classical, bossa nova, etc. Greetings from Argentina, and amazing composition! And sorry for my english...
