Congratulations on your fish! I live on the shore of Vancouver Island and commute to the shore of another island for work - where I also work on the shore, so whales and killer whales irregularly seen, the transient killers whales are generally referred to as the "transients" or sometimes Biggs. People differentiate, because their behaviour is very different from the local pods - it can get pretty dramatic when the transients are about! But this year for the first time I heard a wildlife expert chatting casually and she referred to them as "the Alaska boys" which seemed a very sweet way of naming them!
@NaickKim
@NaickKim 2 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, that's amazing. We actually saw some whales on Vancouver Island as well (we just left Alaska). What island do you work on? Sounds like an interesting job 😃
@adrianmcgrath1984
@adrianmcgrath1984 2 жыл бұрын
@@NaickKim I work on Salt Spring, looking after a big estate on the shore - it’s a quieter time of year for the 'true' whales, there are five different species that pass through in spring and fall, they pass on both sides of Vancouver Island - on the west side of the island there is a third species of killer whale referred to as the 'off shores', I think they can be a danger to true whales, so some of them prefer to use the 'inside' passage. - the transients will take whales too, but perhaps less often. When the transients go through, the harbours and coves can get very full of seals, sea lions, porpoises etc. hiding from them. But the kicker whales aren’t too phased about coming into harbours, there was a Minke whale killed right in the town harbour on Salt Spring some years ago, and there are some crazy videos of whales hunting porpoise in Nanaimo Harbour

******BTW!!! Sorry, but that fishing method the 'generous' fellow showed you seemed to look like 'snagging.' It 's a form of fishing that is illegal in Alaska. It's that quick jerking/dragging motion of your rod that game wardens will get you on. Plus, if you catch a fish using this method, you're looking for more trouble! "(2) It is unlawful to intentionally snag or attempt to snag any fish in fresh water. Fish unintentionally hooked elsewhere than the mouth must be released immediately. "Snag" means to hook a fish elsewhere than in the mouth." ******
@NaickKim
@NaickKim 2 жыл бұрын
This is actually flossing, not snagging. It's used by about 95% of fishermen in Alaska. But I agree, it foul hooks too many fish, but it's not illegal as such.
