This is a rules tip for all events regarding saluting/presenting to the judge, something that every gymnast must do at the start and finish of their routine. The Code of Points says that every gymnast must ""present themself raising 1 or 2 arms and thereby acknowledge the D1 judge at the commencement of their exercise and to acknowledge the same judge at the conclusion of their exercise."" In practice, a bow with hands by your sides is also considered acceptable at the finish of the routine. This salute to the judge is separate from the strict start and finish of judging of the exercise, which is generally acknowledged with a 2 arm raise just before mounting the apparatus and just after landing the dismount and showing control. Judging begins for floor from the first movement of their feet, for vault the moment their feet contact the springboard, and the moment the gymnast's feet leave the ground for all other events. Judging ends once the gymnast has landed their dismount and shown that they are in control (no longer taking steps or off balance).
One common mistake that we see beginners make is thinking that they can't take steps or turn between finishing their dismount and saluting the judge. Since deductions are no longer taken after the gymnast has shown control after completing their dismount, it's perfectly acceptable to turn to face the judge to salute, rather than awkwardly saluting over your shoulder 😁
