About Ingredients:
Join MIT-trained chemist and science educator George Zaidan as he tries to recreate everyday household products like toothpaste, lipstick, or shaving cream using only natural ingredients… and no recipe! He’ll have to decode long lists of intimidating chemical names, figure out what they all do, try and find natural substitutes, and then cook up the do-it-yourself versions in his chemistry lab (kitchen). While George may or may not succeed, we'll all learn something new and surprising about the products we take for granted every day.

It's nice to see a video that's a fail, and that they're honest about it. I don't expect every attempt to be successful the first time out of the gate. It also means they're not cherry picking stories for the ones he can replicate.

Nitrocellulose (also known as cellulose nitrate, flash paper, flash cotton, guncotton, and flash string) is a highly flammable compound formed by nitrating cellulose through exposure to nitric acid or another powerful nitrating agent. When used as a propellant or low-order explosive, it was originally known as guncotton.

I love this series! One thing that people who have shellfish allergies should be aware of: some nail polishes (not just the "peary" ones) contain shellfish proteins. I found this out the hard way after a trip to the emergency room.

@@deepshankhitudu4414 do you mean you don’t like the smell? You could try a water based nail polish, there are several brands. I can’t tolerate the smell of regular nail polish, so it’s perfect for me, there is almost no smell. It doesn’t bother me at all. 😊

You left out a requirement: Non-toxic. Otherwise, Shellac starts to look good. Alcohol as a solvent is a reasonable choice.

I'm pretty sure natural shellac is non-toxic as it is made from the lac bug and the flakes are mixed with ethyl alcohol. Looking it up I discovered that some places are making shellac nail polish!

I wonder what would have happened if you let it dry longer? I use water based nail polish, and it will dissolve like that if you get it wet right away, but if you wait several hours (preferably overnight) it stays like a regular nail polish.

You can use alcohol as a solvent to make it dry quicker and you want the color to be bounded to a non water soluble medium so you might to use tree resin or gum as the main ingredient. If from what I know about shoe polish, the wax is there to protect and give the finish. Unlike modern polish you probably need to buff the nail after.

It's so sad that I can't use nail polish because I have an extreme weird allergy from it. When my skin comes into contact with any nail polish kind of thing, my skin starts to itch and within few minutes, small blisters start to appear. And if I don't treat it as soon as possible, the itching spreads to my whole body and eventually my hands turn into some kind of alien's hand full of blisters 😱😱

Why is the smell so strong? Does the homemade one have a distinct smell?
@jackielinde7568
@jackielinde7568 8 жыл бұрын
The "smell" of nail polish are the esters he was talking about. They're used to help keep the solution "liquidy" until you apply it. Then it evaporates off the nail and into the air, allowing the nail polish to dry. (It's a solvent.) And those esters are why your nail polish smells like a spilled bottle of rubbing alcohol.
@jackielinde7568
@jackielinde7568 8 жыл бұрын
***** I figured that Moises Flores probably was more familiar with rubbing alcohol than paint/varnish removers, so that's the reason I went with it. And for those who don't know, nail polish remover has acetone in it as well. (Wonder what it's affect on nails and nail beds are.)
