Notes:
**1 COMPARISONS OF UNREVIEWED GEAR : Please don't ask me how a product compares to another which I haven't reviewed, as it isn't possible to comment on such products I haven't tested. Check out my website for reviews of products I have completed instead (hit the review tag, and separate tags).
**2 MORE ADVICE : If you are asking me how does X product compare to Y that I HAVE reviewed, or how does something sound beyond comment in videos, or system / further advice, please sign up to Patreon (small amounts!) or make contributions via PayPal where we text chat or Zoom etc. If viewers want this, where you benefit in this way, it is fair to ask for contributions, especially where my time is taken away from videos. Also I can't answer all questions on KZbin anyway and it is rarely as simple as a single response, it requires a deeper dive into experiences to do any advice justice.
**3 ABUSE POLICY : I encourage and like debate, and constructive criticism, but people who abuse or troll me, or my subscribers or commenters, post very negative and non constructive and uncorroborated comments designed to put me or others down (where they don't explain themselves), or they could be perceived as such, as well as aggressive comments / hate, or pit my subscribers against me, get their comments removed and I hide them from commenting again. I don’t need the hassle of these people for all the work I put in! Again I don’t mind people who disagree with me, where they explain, but I tend to delete comments that are not substantiated where the poster doesn’t explain themselves eg just ‘this amp is really bad compared to x’ as it undoes the work I do.

I'm glad I found this channel. Excellent descriptions of how products sound. I do want to point out that Stereophile tested the Supernait 3 and found the power ratings to be very conservative. Naim seems to understate nearly all of their amplifier power ratings.

Nice, balanced review of competing products in the UK market. Just technical enough, and gets to the important aspects of, and differences between the performances of the amps. Very constructively presented and seemingly without bias, it has also brought out a wealth of helpful, experience-based comments from the viewers. An antidote to certain reviews from the US where everything sounds great.

Always love your videos. Particularly your choice of components. I think the currency conversion between the US and UK may not be as steep as it has been at times. Still, this Naim is sold closer to 6000 dollars here. I did see one sold for about 5000 dollars. No doubt a great company with many exceptional products, especially if you are in the UK.

First i must say buy what you want. Your preferences and room layout are more important. I had both the Hegel and Naim supernait and both were excellent (they really were) To me the Naim had a bit of a thump bass and slightly harsh top end (on some tracks). The Hegel was ‘good all round’ but with a slightly thicker mid range. Value wise the Hegel comes out top but not by much. Someone recently did a tare down of the supernait and component cost was £380 GBP. What I don’t like is that Naim seem to just pick a price as the what that deem they want the thing to sell for not what it really costs inc. R&D + profit. - Naim of cause are not the only ones to do this. I now have a Luxman L509x - clarity and subtlety that Naim can only dream of. If someone were to ask me which to get though is none. Get a reasonable system and with your money left over go and travel the world, make some memories with your family. - on my last day I can they say ‘remember when…’ - I will not be talking anything HiFi related.
@13thnotehifireviews7
@13thnotehifireviews7 Жыл бұрын
To be fair to Naim though they charge what the market bears and economists always say the first rule of economics is to charge the highest price. I doubt that it would cost £380. Most of the component costs is the case - it’s solid aluminium and milled on all sides, so not much change from a grand or two. Then the shipping costs in the supply chain, they went up ten to fifteen fold in the pandemic. Also electricity costs with the Russian situation and energy crisis. I was watching a documentary with a uk chef, whose electricity costs of his restaurant kitchen are going up from £5k to £35k a month. I dread to think what an electronics assembly factory costs. Ultimately though I suspect what Naim can charge is based on their reputation and historical presence with lots of brand loyal people and repeat buying, and if people pay it, as they do, then that’s the correct price. It may mean it’s not in the same market as other types. Not like a Veblen good, but the difference between a hublot and seiko in the eyes of buyers.

Very nice video. I bought my SN3 for an absolute steal ("opened box") in July 21 to replace my Naim XS MK1. I adore the SN3 with my old Proac Tablette Reference Eight Signature speakers. Compared to the XS, the SN3 has vastly greater low-range heft and amazing mid-range detail. The amp really pulls you into the music, it's quite an amazing bit of kit (and incredibly well build). The other amps also sound like they would make their owners very happy.

@@briancampbell7712An overpriced external add on that powers either a preamp (either separate or integrated amplifier) or the analogue section of certain CD players. It's basically a power supply with a tightly regulated 12v output. The sonic gains are notable improvements in speed dynamics, grip and the overall impression (illusion?) of a more powerful amplifier. Other options are Teddy Pardo, Avondale and Custom Hifi Cables, which are cheaper, do exactly the same job (in fact they were all doing their own more modern and efficient regulation before Naim introduced "DR"), usually for less money.

Interesting review! I have Supernait 3 & Naim NDX2 streamer/DAC with PMC 23.i combo that I chose after long listening process. Few weeks ago my DIN port broke up on NDX2 streamer and I had to switch to RCA-connection and I immediately noticed that sound quality was not as good and one of the issues being a bit harsh treble with my PMC's. So my question is that have you had a chance to try these with DIN-connection or just RCA? Cause I think that makes a difference with this combo that I have at least. What comes to Hegel H390, I do agree that it's a bit more bass heavy and prolly wider sound stage, but the details that Supernait 3 can reveal and the dynamics are just better for me personally. I have only heard headphone amp from Kinki but that one I really did like and it had same characterics as you mentioned. Finally I believe stacking up Supernait with Naim streamer/dac has some nice synenergy too :)

ditto, I also have an SN3 and, which already sounded great as is, the addition of the Hicap DR took it to another level sonically across the board. It replaced my Primaluna Dialogue Premium Integrated. And this review is absolutely spot on with regards to midrange punch. And the kick drums just sound so much more real and lively but not at all harsh. Using a Holo Audio Spring 3 KTE 80% of the time and it's sublime. Don't miss tubes at all. The funny thing about the PL it had a center imaging so low as if you're sitting at a balcony which was a bit annoying. The SN3 fixed that as well so it wasn't the speakers.

Based on your experience, which of the 3 amps would work best? Supernait 1 was my first amp, and I still feel a pang of regret for selling that beautiful piece. It brought so much joy and warmth to my listening experience. I moved on to an Accuphase, but it left me disappointed. Now, I've switched to an all-in-one solution with the NAD M10. It's convenient, but I know deep down that if the NAD ever fails, I'll go back to the Supernait. That amp was unparalleled, giving me countless hours of relaxation and joy, even at low volumes. The rhythm and style of the classic Naim are simply unbeatable, and you can find them second-hand in superb condition. Plus, it pairs perfectly with my British Spendor D7.2. I don't understand the fascination with tube amps. Every time I had the chance to listen to them, I felt they offered less control, more distortion, and were overpriced. I also don't get where the idea comes from that they're difficult to drive speakers with. In my 30m² room, even with several speakers, I barely hit the 12 o'clock mark on the volume regulator. The Supernait had everything I needed and more, and it remains unmatched in my heart.

Interesting to hear your thoughts about the Supernait and PMC’s. I also have some PMC’s and when looking for a new amp I demoed the Supernait and Rega Aethos. I ended up buying the Aethos. Overall the Supernait is clearly the better amp, but I agree it does not pair well with the PMC’s, it exaggerates the PMC’s brighter top end and it was not a comfortable listen. The warmer sounding Aethos just took the edge off the PMC’s to give a much better overall tonal balance and listening experience.

I totally agree. Certainly the twenty5 range or newer twenty5i range, but older pmc’s like the twenty series or older than that, or maybe old fact series, I wouldn’t be saying that and certainly not a case of a ‘house’ sound between pmc’s of different generations, at least as far as their bass/treble balance. Contrary to what I said, the nad does work with them all. Will correct it…..

It's a nice comparison Simon 👍. I tried Supernait 3 and UnityNova from Naim with Focal Kanta2 speakers. Even though they promote these as a synagatic pair, I didn't like the taste of the sound. I think it is toomuch for beryllium tweeters. So I bought Hegel H390. But still I think I dont get enough bass. Is it French speakers dont have bass compairing to american speakers ?

The Hegel is pretty powerful (the naim is overhyped) I didn't have any bass and was using a supposed 200wpc Arcam a49 driving small Ruark acoustic Templar 2s 88db sensitivity max power handling 100 wpc. I tried something new classD power amp 600wpc and 1/3 of the price of the Arcam. Now finally I have bass real string plucked in the air bass!! Amp manufacturers are very stingy with power. The Hegel should be enough but my experiments have shown me even in a small living room with small floorstanders power is king. Personally I would never drop below 300wpc now I am absolutely gob smacked at what real power can do. I found the Naim the most disappointing especially as it's the same price I thought the Hegel sounded lovely

The interesting thing is each of these amp companies promote a separate metric. Damping factor, watts, current, and now slew rate. Hegel’s damping factor is something that is real and it has nothing to do with power or decibel level. The control my Hegel had over my magnepans was special. Ifi just released a new streamer for 1200 usd/gbp called the neo stream . Looks like quite a nice package for the price.
@13thnotehifireviews7

To be fair slew rate doesn’t have anything to do with power or db level as far as I know. It’s just different design philosophies I suppose. I saw that re neo stream, looks nicely made. 😀

One of your best reviews because of the particular amps involved. I am being selfish but would there be any chance to do the same amps driving ATC SCM40 or 19 speakers...? I know ATC demand a lot of current but the Supernait 2 or 3 driving ATC speakers get a lot of thumbs up from users and would be very interesting how it compares with eg Hegel H390 driving the same ATC speakers...

I've tried SCM11 with a Supernait 1 and it had no trouble making the ATCs shake the room with the volume pointing at 7 o'clock. The midrange was incredible with vocals and acoustic guitars but the ATC were a tad too dark for my taste, although this was mostly because of the CD5 as a source. I've found Naim CD players to be a little top end shy. ATC passives have a reputation for being hard to drive because of their fairly low sensitivity but they have a pretty flat impedance so don't necessarily need as much power as many think. It's also worth noting that Naim cripple their products somewhat so they can double dip your wallet for an external PSU, although that depends on how much you like the presentation of the bare bones product. If you love hard rock and metal and value slam above subtlety, then an additional PSU is a no brainer as speed and muscularity where the most obvious gains are.

@@pauln6803 Many thanks for your insightful reply. I used to own a Naim System and found that Naim loves group music (eg Santana and The Pogues) but not so much large orchestras as found in classical music. But that was many years ago so the 'soundstage' may of grown with the later models of Naim. Despite Naim 'watts' having the reputation of being quite powerful I always found it frustrating that Naim do not produce Integrated amps with eg 150 watts into 8ohms so I can use them with ATC speakers. Many years ago I did enquire directly to ATC whether Naim entry amps can be used with their entry speakers their response was very direct in that Naim Amps do not produce the sort of amps which would drive their speakers 'properly'...

I found the SN3 harsh with poorly recorded material when matched with ATC (SCM7 and SCM19). But acoustic instruments had a natural tone. Also, if you're a fan of large soundstage and imaging, the SN3/ATC combo is not the king of instruments separation and 3D imaging. My 🪙🪙

Thanks very much. I obviously did the comparison amp for amp and adding power supplies pushes the cost up, as then a fairer comparison might be using added components with the Kinki etc like different power conditioners and so on. So such a comparison is probably moot. At the end of the day it comes down to a) is hifi a value proposition to the buyer or b) is hifi money no object buying but people want a branded name with different sound quality but not necessarily better

Naim says these are not speaker cable dependent; and they aren't in the same way as classic Naim. Interesting take on the SN3 & H390. I auditioned them back to back. I found the DAC in the H390 was just getting pipped by my Chord Mojo 1 which I found very disappointing. I hear the Qutest is more Hugo 2 Level so its interesting that you found the internal H390 DAC better than a Qutest! Secondly, I just found the delivery a bit too linear and civilised with H390 in comparison to the SN3. Don't get me wrong, I was very very close to pulling the trigger on a H390, its a fantastic amp and immense value for money, but for me, the SN3 just does dynamics & PRAT so well, its immensely entertaining to listen to. Coupled with the fact its upgradable, the addition of a power supply to SN3 easily moves it well past the H390 and then becomes comparable in cost to H390. Both are fantastic products though. As ever, listen for yourself.

A follow up that digs deeper into the pairings more specfically would most likely get tons of views as well. I don't think the NAD got quite a fair shake using its analog input since the signal was processed again, as you mentioned it really should be used as a streamer amp. I've heard it and the Naim paired with B&W 804 D4s and felt the NAD was equally as resolving.
