Aww. Naka is so gorgeous! You should do twists using the same hair you used to wrap the locs. I do the same method. Braid your natural hair. Separate the hair to open the curl. Crochet in the hair. Twist in the direction of your left hand (I find twisting to my right hand unravels). Use 3 to 4 pieces for jumbo twists and 2 pieces for small twists. Some jumbo twists would look lovely on Naka!

The key is to use a crochet hook with a bigger loop. I had the same issues as you when I did it with the same size hook you have. You did a fantastic job and look amazing!!
