I have three Nak decks, a MR-1, a BX-100, and a 480. I haven't done a belt change on any of these (yet) because I assumed that the mechanism would have to be disassembled. It's good to know that at least on the DR2, it can be done with a dental pick. I'll be bookmarking this and revisiting when it's time to tackle this job.
@goodun29743 жыл бұрын
ThriftyAV, not sure about the DR2, but the MR-1 and BX-100 use Sankyo transports and the idler tires at least can actually be replaced from the front door without even removing the transport. The 480, however, is completely different, far more complicated to disassemble for installing new rubber,, and some of the nylon parts in the transport and switching mechanisms shrink and crack with age. Don't put a lot of time and money into a 480.

What were the symptoms that required the belt renew? My machine stops almost immediately when going into play mode. Strange behavior as the motors pull well and the capstan pulling strong.

Loved your video. I love Nakamichi cassette decks though my son feels cassettes are past their prime. Just out of curiosity, do the DR 1 and DR 2 have that infernal idler tire or do these decks have gears? I have been led to believe that the idler tire usually wears out and then there's slippage that doesn't happen if there is a gear mechanism. Thanks
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
Couldn't tell you because it's been years since i have been into one. Gears might not slip but they break. Had a tape deck in that i checked over went through all the operations. Play ff Rew record ect. All works good. What I didn't do was rewind a tape to the end. Deck came back. Pendulum gear shattered when the tape hit the end. That's the problem with gears.

Great, very well done and instructive video to applause. However, the same procedure can be used to replace the Nakamichi cassette deck 1.5 capstan strap.

I hated that fiber washer that Nakamichi used to hold on the pulley for the rubber tire of the BX-125. Tried the Scotch tape trick, but when trying to get it back on it went flying across the room, never to be seen or found again. Nakamichi and Tandberg had some weird ideas for how to make things unfriendly to work on. Good machines though.

I’d like to know what the fault symptom was please. I have a DR-1 which is essentially very similar and takes about a second to come up to speed but is stable in play/pause mode.

Regarding drummers, Ringo was famous with the Beatles but he was not Best. Note: this is a pun.
@joeb25883 жыл бұрын
Good one.
@will896873 жыл бұрын
Ringo was not technically proficient like Neil Peart but he made up for it by his innate sense of what a song needed. No less a drummer than Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighers) called him "the king of feel." To put it another way, he was not the best drummer, but he was the best drummer *for the Beatles.*
@12voltvids3 жыл бұрын
That's debatable. If you follow the beatles story the only reason he was placed in the band was because John Paul and George were jealous that Pete Best was attracting all the attention of the mob of girls. They put Ringo in, whom was a session drummer in to get less attention. Turns out he was the right man for the Job! Not a proficient drummer at all and he is the first to admit that but good enough for the very basic simple music the Beatles did. The did get much better in the later years. Abbey road was IMHO their best work. Yes i was / am a Beatle fan.

Pete Best was superior. But then again most rock drummers are pretty basic. The jazzers are the the real deal. Dennis chambers, Hal Blain, Stewart Copeland, Neil Peart,Stanton Moore, Steve Gadd, Phil Collins, Jon Bonham, Steve Smith, Dave Weckl, Buddy Rich, DD Chandler, Antonio Sanchez, Carlos Vega, ginger baker. Now you are talking real drummers. Many of those guys were in rock bands but were jazz trained. The Jazz guys can play anything and puts regular musicians to shame.

That because Ringo was just a nice guy that happened to land the gig of a lifetime. He will go down as one of the most famous drummers of all time. Yes there were better, all the jazzer's could out play him in shackles but he got the job done with a little help from his friends.

The Beatles were not as great as some believe. It was the studio musicians that George Martin brought into the session like Billy Preston and Eric Clapton that made their music shine. Yes they wrote some good stuff and George Harrison was a fantastic guitarists but the session guys was what made their layer material so good. Of course like the wrecking crew these musicians never got the credit.
