About the Japanese written on your paulownia box. 特製萬年筆(tokuseimannenhitsu) means a special fountain pen. 中屋万年筆謹製(nakayamannenhitsukinsei) means that pen carefully created by the craftsmen of the Nakaya fountain pen. The word 謹製(kinsei) is mainly attached to traditional Japanese products. Kimono, Japanese sweets, Japanese tea, folding fans, etc. Your 碧溜塗(hekitamenuri,hekinuri)looks beautiful like matcha, a traditional Japanese tea!

I’ve never seen a urushi finish in the flesh. Looks lovely. Maybe some day when I get to visit a pen show. My only really expensive pen is a Platinum 3776 Karakusa (incised celluloid chinkin). My collection runs to only about 2 dozen, and only 3 were over $250.
@PenFriends4 жыл бұрын
I have had my eye on this pen for quite some time actually! Chinkin is a stunning technique! I would love to get something like that as my next big spend.

Lovely review, thank you. I must admit, you touched on what probably has kept me from purchasing a Nakaya .. besides the price. You touched on it whist discussing Montblanc and Visconti as examples of prices. I do find value in such things as filling systems, materials used, unique designs, etc (not saying that you don't), and find that to be somewhat lacking with Nakaya pens. I realize the primary attraction is the finishes and their nibs (correct me if I am wrong), but I must admit I am not a big fan of the only Platinum I've purchased, the 3776 ... so I've been hesitant to try any other Platinum products. With that said, I am still drawn to the IDEA of Nakaya as a 'grail' pen. I can appreciate the workmanship, and the to that end, I have even purchased several ebonite pens to try them out. One being a Ranga 4C (looking forward to your eventual Ranga Review), and the Santini Italia that I commented about in your Santini/Flex pen review. I do like the feel of ebonite, and with the inclusion of a piston filler in the Santini, I can say that it has become a favorite pen of mine. I use the eyedroppered Ranga as a daily pen at my workbench for customer correspondence. I have even considered picking up a lesser priced urushi pen to see how I would like it and to get a sense of the lacquered feel of the finish. But I figured at this point, if I'm going this route, I might as well go 'all out'. So ... maybe a Decapod? or possibly a Dorsal Fin 2??? How about a Ferrari and a yacht to go along with it? LOL Anyways, I know what I like and also try to keep an open mind. BTW: I am a watchmaker and collector ... I can't help but wonder what watch you're sporting in the video ... the Pilot's watch, type B dial, automatic, onion crown, leather strap, 2 rivets ... Laco Aviator?

Oh, I do agree, there are some MB's that really does interest me, but I have always been an advocate for hand-craftsmanship and I am not sure how much of MB's pens get that personal touch. I own an MB starwalker finerline and I do enjoy using that pen! Someday when the price point is right I will add a MB 149 calligraphy to my collection, but the new price for what is essentially an injection-molded pen is a hard pill to swallow. Still, I realise there are is a demand and a market for their pens :) And I don't hate on any manufacturer, just a question of personal tastes :) I agree with you in regards to the ebonite on the santini, now there's a manufacturer who offers a lot of bang for buck. Hand made, hand-polished, in house nin, piston filler for the price they ask in a European market is an absolute steal! I'll be getting a custom one done from them at some stage and may get urushi'ed!

@@PenFriends I do get it ... the hand turned and lacquered aspects of Nakaya coupled with their nibs must be a true experience. Something to strive for, I'm sure. Thanks again for your review and response.

@@PenFriends at the moment , no. I just purchased a few inks and I'm going to just shop around and be open to pen reviews and see what strikes my fancy. I've already spent more than I planned in 2020, so I will enjoy what I've purchased.

Rick Hoover and your almost right about the watch! It’s a Laco B! But it uses the Japanese movement. It’s a perfect watch! I love that laco has history which links these pilot watches to WW2.

Do all of us Brits use that phrase when trying out pens..typewriters etc?

Are you referring to the quick brown fox? If so, I am not entirely sure, but it shows off the expression of each character of the letter. Although, I'd like to mix it up!

I agree about the Pilot inks. I use Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuki yo and Kon Peki and they are both superb in mine. They are a great but unfortunately very expensive ink in the UK. I buy mine from the EU with 20% discounts when they’re around. Enjoy it and make sure you use it a lot. Brilliant 😀👍🏻
@PenFriends4 жыл бұрын
Where do you buy from in Europe? I’d love to get some! But like you said UK prices sting rather.

@@PenFriends - La Couronne Du Comte for this ink. They have discounts fairly regularly and at 20% too. So the €24.90 price soon becomes around £18! A lot better. Join the email club. They’ve just done a new website but no ‘live’ stock levels as yet so buying does a not mean it’s in stock. Great site and good customer service too. 👍🏻😀 Don’t forget Fountain Pen day is coming, they’ll be plenty of discounts then.

How do you compare medium/fine nib? Can I request the artist signature?
@PenFriends2 жыл бұрын
Medium or fine nibs or medium fine nibs? In terms of fine and medium, there is a noticeable difference between writing experience. The medium is smoother, whilst the fine gives you more feedback.
