These pollutants react with water vapor and other chemicals in the air to form sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and nitric acid (HNO3). The acid rain model involves a few key steps: 1. Emission: SO2 and NOx are emitted into the atmosphere from sources such as cars, power plants, and industrial processes. 2. Transformation: In the atmosphere, SO2 and NOx react with oxygen and other compounds to form sulfuric acid and nitric acid. 3. Transport: Winds can carry the acids over long distances, allowing them to travel far from their original source. 4. Deposition: Acid rain falls to the ground as rain, snow, or dry particles. When it comes into contact with the ground, it can impact soil, water bodies, vegetation, and even buildings. 5. Effects: Acid rain can harm ecosystems by leaching essential nutrients from soil, damaging aquatic life, and harming forests. It can also corrode buildings, statues, and infrastructure. Efforts to reduce acid rain include regulations to limit emissions of SO2 and NOx from industrial and transportation sources.
