Listen, I've been shouting obscenities at all my attempts at nålbinding for two weeks now. I've never met a craft I couldn't handle, and this one was thwarting me. This is the first video that actually made sense. Thank you so much for making and sharing with us.

@@YlvaTheRed I really am. The funny part is that I'm very proficient at knitting, crocheting, and various crafts, such as ribbon braiding techniques that are Viking in origin. But this one just... I couldn't. So many thumbs and loose loops that looked utter crap, and yeah. Thanks again. This is great, and you fixed my frustration. I'm halfway through a mitten in an hour. :P

Hi Ylva, I've really been enjoying your videos (especially the natural dyeing and nalbinding ones). Thank you! I have a few questions. As a non-nalbinder, I've seen the York stitch and the Oslo stitch referenced. How are they different? Also, I especially like the garb you are wearing in this video; what is the garment that you are wearing over your shift? I've not seen anything split down the front like that before in historic garments. Many thanks!
@YlvaTheRed4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you've been enjoying my stuff, I can promise there's more to come (in fact, the next one will be live in only a couple of hours)! There is only one movement's difference between York Stitch and Oslo Stitch, but they do have a different appearance. Also, Oslo Stitch garments aren't as prone to curling like York stitch garments can be! By the slit in the front, do you mean at the neckline of my tunics?
@karenradcliff91634 жыл бұрын
@@YlvaTheRed No, although I do like the notch at the neckline of other tunics you've worn, which I've not seen in other, slightly later medieval British dresses/kirtles. (I've been interested in Viking, Hiberno-Norse and Saxon-Viking/York culture and textiles for a while now, but on my own--I haven't connected as yet with any groups, and so while I see a lot of people do medieval England, not nearly so many do early medieval/Viking textiles, which is why you drew my attention. :) ) What I meant was that this particular overdress seemed to be either cut very deeply in a V or to crossover at the front and be pinned shut with a brooch closer to the waist (think kimono or bathrobe). Is it a particular type of garment? Or perhaps it's me misjudging what I'm seeing? Thanks for the reply about Oslo stitch!
@YlvaTheRed4 жыл бұрын
Oh, that is my Birka coat, that neckline is one of a number of possible interpretations, but it sits comfortably on my body, so that's why I chose it. I have more videos lined up to continue exploring specific textiles and garments, so hopefully you'll get some benefit from them! 😊

Hi Mori! If you check out my tutorial play list, I have a video dedicated to the joining method I use 😀
@PopulaUrbanum4 жыл бұрын
Do synthetic fibers perform differently when nalbinding?
@YlvaTheRed4 жыл бұрын
I find that they do, and the most critical point where they differ is when joining ends. I have a video for that 😉 While it is still perfectly acceptable to use synthetic fibres for your hobby, if that's what you have available to you, natural fibres such as sheep's wool, alpaca, bamboo and the like, are warmer, felt nicely, join ends well, and impact the environment differently long term.
@kimberlymatthews35404 жыл бұрын
I'm a bit confused. Are you supposed to flip the work over? After you make that first stitch, it's showing that the working yarn is only going through one loop not 2. How did you do that?
@YlvaTheRed4 жыл бұрын
No need to flip the work over, and your first two stitches in the second row go into the same stitch in the first row, so they should be the same. Does that help?
@hardrock8342 жыл бұрын
Does nalbinding have to be worked in the round or is there a way to turn the work and work another row?
@YlvaTheRed2 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have to be worked in the round, it can be worked 'flat' instead. I don't currently have any videos on that, but I believe there are others on KZbin you might find instructive.
@zekiah24 жыл бұрын
Does anyone have any information on starting a second row with a York stitch on a flat item? I want to make a scarf but I can’t get the second row started cleanly.
@YlvaTheRed4 жыл бұрын
I find York stitch is not a great stitch for working flat, but to turn the corner, you need to do 2-3 extra stitches into the last stitch in your row.
@zekiah24 жыл бұрын
Ylva The Red what stitch would you recommend for flat items? Are there any stitches other than York that can be done off the thumb?
@YlvaTheRed4 жыл бұрын
@@zekiah2 Yeah absolutely, you can work a number of stitches off the thumb, not just York. Try Oslo maybe. It's still a relatively simple stitch, but lays much flatter.
@jessandsometimesacat82513 жыл бұрын
@@YlvaTheRed I asked about flat items and then found this in the comments! Next question (sorry) do you have, or know where I can find oslo stitch off the thumb instructions? I have been looking for other off the thumb stitches for weeks!

@@jessandsometimesacat8251 I can't think of anyone who works Oslo off the thumb, off the top of my head unfortunately. 99% of nalbinders I know of in KZbin or pretty much anywhere else work on the thumb, sorry! If I think of anyone, I'll try to remember to put it here.
