I have watched so many nålbinding videos and they all end up not showing/explaining what is going on clearly. I watched this video.... Without even having the tools in my hand and could see EXACTLY what is going on. You explain it clearly. You don't add lots of complicated unnecessary information. You may not be an 'expert nålbinder' but you're a born teacher!

Pat Wallace The simplicity of explanation & the camera work are great !!!! The comparison about the different types Nalebinding was the first I'd heard, wish I'd heard that 4 years ago when I started investigating it.

There's always new things to learn, and everyone has their own approach. While don't commonly practice ALL the different ways of nalbinding, I do think that KZbin is an excellent platform for communicating the differences, especially to help beginners find what works for them, so I try to share whatever I know about the topics I talk about 😊

I was actually taught this when i was a kid. My grandma showed me a bunch of different yarn things growing up. I didn’t realize it was a so taste of a skill. She loved yarn so much. She mostly did knitting as I got older though. I wish I was more patient when I was younger and stuck to it. I think I want to start trying it again. I have already re-picked up knitting and crocheting. I only ever learned the basics of both of them. And I am getting a Turkish spindle. I can’t believe this brought up forgotten memories this brought up.

I can get the first row okay on both you nalbinding and the nalbinding on the thumb, I run into problems when I get to the second row. It's driving me crazy! LOL, I can crochet and knit both, I am determined to do this eventually. How can it be so difficult... ack.

I have a deformity in my off hand from when I broke my hand as a teen (decades ago). The deformity is slight, but it makes it nearly impossible for me to keep the slipknot loop on my thumb, and I can't keep a grip on the tail end. Would you be able to do a video on using a stick or something else like a "false thumb" to get this initial ring of stitches made?

@@YlvaTheRed Thank you! I am just getting started, and your beginners' videos parts 1 & 2, showing how to work off-thumb, have been very helpful. I'm now trying to think through how to make a thumb substitute so I can learn working from a closed end. Initial thoughts are along the lines of a dowel with a rounded end and a collar to keep the thumb loop from sliding too low, and maybe a notch to hold the tail end. This is just the start of an idea, however; I'm sure there are more details to figure out to make it work. If you or anyone you know can figure something out I would greatly appreciate seeing it!

@@YlvaTheRed Is there a particular peg type you have in mind, or just a standard wooden peg like a coat peg? Something like that should work, I think, especially with a notch or tape to secure the tail. Do they already make a peg with this in mind?

How do you decide how big or small to make the loops? Does it just depend on yarn weight?

For me, I primarily make my loops only big enough that my needle passes easily through the loop. I am not a fan of excessively loose stitches when working with York stitch, however, in some more involved stitches the loops do need to be larger when first made.

Hi Deborah, this method of starting from a closed end is used in making socks, hats, bags and a number of other things. What shape it takes will depend on how many stitches you start with in the first round, and how you increase stitches thereafter. I cannot seem to put the stitches onto the slip knot the correct way. 🤦‍♀️ I’ve been jumping around from tutorial to tutorial and this one has been most helpful. I will continue with my attempts but i cannot say if I shall ever get it right. Ive even slowed the video right down.

Yeah, l've (at least tried) to watch those too. But what l find difficult is that even if l have young eyes, l have difficulties to see or understand how stitches go after closing a circle. Thread is either too small or because l am a man, who has no previous experience of knitting. Today l bought 5 mm thick yarn, maybe it will help a bit... Edit: yep, this 5mm is much better for practice purposes.
